Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala undergoes successful surgery
Bayern Munich attacker Jamal Musiala has undergone a successful operation following the broken leg and ankle he suffered in his team's FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.
On Monday evening a Bayern statement confirmed that the 22-year-old had had "successful surgery" and that "he will begin his first rehabilitation sessions tomorrow, Tuesday, and will be unavailable to the German record champions for the next few months."
Musiala had just worked his way back from injury to compete at the tournament in the United States and was making his first start for Bayern in the competition when a collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma led to the youngster being stretchered off at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Subsequent tests revealed that Musiala had suffered a fracture of the fibula and a broken and dislocated ankle, with Bayern announcing that the player was set to undergo surgery and could be expected to be out of action "for a long period".
“This serious injury and the lengthy lay-off are a real shock for Jamal and us all," Bayern's board member for sport, Max Eberl said. "Everyone knows how immensely important Jamal is for our game and what a central role he has in our team," he continued.
"Furthermore, there’s also a huge human impact and we all feel for him: Jamal has just come back from an injury and will now be out for another long period. He’ll get everything he needs from us. We’ll support him intensively, be by his side and we already look forward to when he’s back on the pitch.”
Musiala netted a hat-trick in a 10-0 win over Auckland City in Bayern's opening game at the Club World Cup. He later had roles to play in his team's triumphs against Boca Juniors and Flamengo, before disaster struck against PSG.
"It was a difficult situation at half-time," Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany said after his team's 2-0 loss. "There are many important things in life, but in the end, football is their life. And Jamal lives for football, and you just feel powerless when something like this happens. We wanted to win the second half for Jamal."
"It's always brutally bitter when you have to be substituted because you just can't go on," said a visibly shaken Thomas Müller. "Especially for Jamal, who has been through a tough period of suffering in recent months. Of course we wish him a speedy recovery."
In a post on Instagram, Donnarumma, who was visibly shaken by the injury, later said, "All my prayers and well wishes are with you Jama Musiala". Fellow Bayern star Alphonso Davies, who suffered his own major injury last term and was live streaming a watchalong of the game at the time, was also devastated by the incident, with his emotional reaction going viral.
