Bayern Munich cruise to record opening win against Auckland City at FIFA Club World Cup
The TQL Stadium in Cincinnati witnessed Bayern Munich enjoy a record-breaking start to their FIFA Club World Cup title tilt, with Vincent Kompany's men easing past Auckland City thanks to a Jamal Musiala hat-trick and further goals from Kingsley Coman (2), Sacha Boey, Michael Olise (2) and Thomas Müller (2).
After Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami played out a scoreless draw against Al Ahly in the tournament opener, it was up to Bayern to provide the opening goals of this newly imagined Club World Cup. The Bundesliga giants duly obliged in a one-sided first-half against the semi-pros from New Zealand. Jonathan Tah made a high-profile move to the Bavarian side from Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the competition and his debut here was a fruitful one, the Germany international soon heading a Joshua Kimmich corner back to Coman, who nodded high into the net for 1-0. Coman quickly turned provider for Boey to lash in Bayern’s second and the men in red were out of sight soon afterwards when Olise tapped home a Müller cross that had been aimed at Harry Kane. The busy Coman drilled in his second of the day in the 22nd minute and while FCB fans had to wait for their team’s fifth, it came in the form of a Müller volley that preceded Olise doubling up with a super strike from distance.

Perhaps with an eye on next Saturday’s second game in Group C against South American threats Boca Juniors, Vincent Kompany brought his brace-boys Coman and Olise off for the second half. The bad news for Auckland was that Bayern had serious options among the replacements. Lennart Karl was introduced to make his senior Bayern debut while Musiala would later enter the fray having fully recovered from injury. The 22-year-old will likely be one of the stars of this tournament and he quickly showed why, curling in FCB’s seventh of the day. Musiala then made it a personal double from the penalty spot, before taking advantage of a defensive error to complete a hat-trick before supporters of the record German champions bounced to one more Müller effort that took Bayern to double figures and the perfect Club World Cup start.

Watch: Highlights of Bayern's opening rout
Full-time: Bayern 10-0 Auckland
There was to be no miraculous comeback for Auckland in the second half as Bayern continued much as they did in the first. A hat-trick from Musiala and a second from Müller took the Bavarians' tally to 10; the record-highest margin of victory in a Club World Cup match by some distance. Müller's own personal tally was also taken to 250 career Bayern goals as a result. 10-0 means this is the first time Bayern have reached double figures of goals in a game since a 12-0 thrashing of Bremer SV in a DFB Cup first round match back in August 2021.
Kilkolly wins it off Tah down the left. Tong swings it in, forcing Neuer to punch it clear.

Müller fires Bayern into double figures!
Bayern's most beloved son gets his 250th career goal in a Bayern shirt. Gnabry latches onto a loose ball in the box before digging out a cross from the byline. Müller is - as he so often is - in the right place at the right time, to guide it home on the volley.
Bayern's No. 42 rounds off an hugely impressive second half performance with his third goal of the afternoon. Latching onto a loose ball out of the back from Auckland keeper Tracey, he punishes the sloppiness with a clinical finish into the bottom left corner.
Auckland have their first shot on target of the match as Kilkolly latches onto a ball in behind on the left flank. The only man up, he has to go it alone, striking a low effort towards the far corner, but Neuer is there to smother it.

Stanišić tries to get in on the act
The centre-back does his best winger impression as he cuts in off the left flank, beats two defenders and unleashes a shot towards the far post, but it's off target.

New territory
No team had ever scored seven goals in a Club World Cup match before today. Bayern now have eight!

Musiala at the double!
The No. 42 is the latest Bayern player to grab a brace today. After being brought down in the box, he steps up to convert the penalty, sending Tracey diving the wrong way as he strokes it home.
The 10x OFC Champions League champions catch Bayern out at the back and launch a very quick counter-attack. It's worked to Yoo on the right, who has the opportunity to hit it first-time, but in cutting it back onto his left foot, allows Musiala to get back and make the block.

Musiala back with a bang!
It was only a matter of time for Bayern's No. 42 really. Müller cuts it back from the left channel to Musiala on the edge of the box, who - cool as you like - picks his spot in the far corner and curls it past Tracey.
The teenager's corner finds Musiala, who beats his marker on the edge of the box before laying it off to Gnabry. The German international squeezes a shot away, but Tracey is down and equal to it.
62'
Double change
Both Musiala and Upamecano complete their return from injury as they replace Kane and Guerreiro. Will there be more Bayern names on the scoresheet today?
The biggest win ever at the Club World Cup was when Al Hilal beat Al Jazira 6-1 in 2021. Being 6-0 up at the hour-mark, Bayern are easily on course to break that record.
59'
Old and new generations combine
Müller plays a one-two with Karl down the right before pulling the trigger. However, his powerful right-footed effort is well wide of the mark.
Trademark Müller
The Bayern legend rolled back the years with his first-half finish to make it five.
Kimmich takes it from the left, picking out Gnabry on the edge of the box. The substitute curls an effort through lots of bodies towards the back post, forcing a fantastic diving save out of Tracey in the Auckland goal.
52'
Karl's flicked header
Stanišić spots a clever run from Karl and picks him out with an equally clever ball. The 17-year-old's effort with his back to goal is only just wide of the mark.
50'
Manickum leads the charge
Auckland break with pace with their No. 10 driving his side up the pitch before playing a tidy reverse pass into the path of Lobo, whose effort is blocked behind for a corner. It's swung in from the left, but Neuer gets up well to claim it.
48'
Debutant Karl
Bayern's 17-year-old hot prospect makes his debut this afternoon after coming on for Olise at half-time.

Back underway!
Auckland get the ball rolling again for the second half here. Kompany makes two changes at half-time; Gnabry and Karl come in for Coman and Olise, the former of which is denied his opportunity for a first Bayern career hat-trick.
An utterly one-sided first-half draws to a close following Olise's second of the afternoon. From minute one, Bayern have been on top, dominating possession and taking the lead inside six minutes through Coman, who likewise bagged a brace. Boey and Müller also got in on the act, with the latter providing a collectors item towards the end of his long Bayern career.
The No. 17 rounds off a truly dominant first-half display with an absolute wondergoal. Receiving it out wide from Boey, he cuts inside and beats two defenders before curling a precision strike into the far corner.
The Bayern legend scores what will be one of his final ever goals in a Bayern shirt. Tah sprays the ball wide to Olise, who lifts his head and puts an absolute peach into the path of the Raumdeuter, who needs only to steer it past Tracey from inside the six yard box.
The Frenchman cuts in off the left flank and has no other thought in his mind than to shoot. His right-footed effort cannons towards the bottom left corner, but Tracey gets across well to parry it, before diving on the loose ball.
41'
Staying solid
Since conceding the fourth of the match, Auckland have really shored up their defence. They are still struggling to maintain possession, but the New Zealanders have defended well and have made it especially hard for Bayern to involve Kane.
38'
It falls for Kane
A great ball by Müller catches the Auckland defence out, finding the run of Kane in behind the back-line. There's just too much pace on it for Kane to bring it down, though and Auckland are let off.
Coman jubilant
The Frenchman couln't contain his smile after getting his second - and Bayern's fourth - of the afternoon. He's never scored a professional hat-trick for Bayern. Could today be the day?
Olise slips it through for Kane inside the Auckland box, who drills a powerful low shot towards the near post, but Tracey is equal to the effort, palming it away.
30'
Overhit
There's a big cheer from the crowd as Thomas Müller receives the ball in an advanced position on the left flank. Unfortunately, his cross towards the back post is overhit and trickles behind for a goal-kick.
27'
In from Kimmich
A corner comes in from the left, taken by the Germany captain. It's headed away at the near post by an Auckland defender, dropping to Boey, who (again) strikes it first-time into the stands.
Boey looking lively
The Frenchman was used somewhat sparingly by Kompany last season but has really caught the eye for Bayern so far this afternoon, especially with his clinical finish just before the 20-minute mark.
The Frenchman is there to punish the New Zealanders as Auckland lose the ball in midfield and Bayern instantly make them pay. Coman shrugs off two defenders in the box before converting a low finish across the keeper with his left boot.
Bayern have switched it on in the last couple of minutes. This time, Guerreiro threads it through for Müller, who spins his man before threading a low cross in. Kane miskicks it, but Olise is at the back post to sweep it in.
Another clinical showing from Bayern is rounded off by the right-back, Boey. Kimmich curls his signature cross into the box from in off the right flank. Coman gets up well to win it, knocking it down right to Boey, who takes a touch before smashing it low across goal to make it two.
All of a sudden, it opens up for Auckland, who mount a quick counter-attack down the left flank. But it's halted by Boey, who stops Manickum from getting round him, shielding the ball behind for a goal-kick.
11'
Just wide
Some more intricate play from Olise and Müller frees up Boey on the right flank, who plays a deep cross into Kane. It drops to Pavlović, whose snapshot is wide of the mark.
8'
No slowing
Olise and Boey combine excellently down the right again, with Bayern's No. 17 dancing past a few Auckland defenders before winning a corner. The Frenchman takes it, but Boey's eventual first-time effort on the edge of the box is well off target.
6'
Second time of asking!
Coman scores the first goal of the Club World Cup! The corner comes in from the left, finding an unmarked Tah at the back post, who heads it back across goal and, this time Coman's header beats Tracey to open the scoring.
Olise gets down the right flank before cutting it back to Kimmich, who curls a deep cross in with his first touch. Coman rises highest, flicking the ball goalwards, but goalkeeper Tracey makes a fantastic stop to deny him, tipping it behind for a corner.
3'
In from Guerreiro
The Portuguese has the first opportunity for a cross, searching for Kane at the far post, but an Auckland head is first to the ball.
2'
Bright start
Bayern instantly look to attack down the right flank with Boey and Olise combining well, but Auckland have enough men behind the ball and it comes to nothing.

And we're off!
It's Bayern who get us underway here in Cincinnati.

How's your ball knowledge?
Auckland midfielder Den Heijer was once a player for German lower-league side FC Kleve, playing for a brief stint in the Oberliga from 2020 until the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Today he starts against the German record champions. What a journey!
Record holders
Bayern will be facing Club World Cup veterans today as no side has featured in the competition more times than Auckland City! This is thanks to them winning 11 of the last 13 OFC Champions Leagues despite only being founded in 2004.
Auckland team news
As expected, Ivan Vicelich fields a back-five for Auckland in their first Club World Cup outing. Danger man Bevan starts up top, whilst De Vries - who is within nine appearances of becoming Auckland's record appearance maker - starts on the bench. Likewise Kilkolly, who has 65 goals in 122 games must also take his place on the bench as Auckland look set up to hinder Bayern's offence as much as possible.
Bayern team news
Vincent Kompany names his first Bayern team in just shy of a month since his side’s closing Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim. For his first squad of the Club World Cup, there’s a Bayern debut for Jonathan Tah, while Thomas Müller makes his 752nd appearance for the club, which could rise by at least two and at most six by the tournament's end. Sacha Boey and Josip Stanišić also take their places in the starting XI.
Josip Stanišić, who (like Tah) could well feature in the opener due to fitness issues surrounding Upamecano and Kim, is eager not to get carried away before getting started, saying: "We’d be best served to see the game as the first important step in this tournament. When you start a tournament well, you know you’re only a win away from progressing to the next round.”
The Bayern boss was quick to hype up his new signing - who is likely to feature with Bayern plagued by injury problems in his centre-back position - saying in his press conference: "Jonathan has leadership qualities. He communicates a lot and has shown his qualities in the Bundesliga. Since he's also a Germany international, integration with us hasn't been that difficult. We've got the confidence that he can help out quickly. We've got a few players in that area who aren't 100 percent fit. Minjae Kim isn't fit yet. Dayot Upamecano isn't at 100 percent yet either."
Both sides enter into this one with four wins and one draw in their last five games, in the exact same WWDWW format, but only one can claim that all-important W in the opening game of their respective Club World Cup campaigns.
Kompany on facing Auckland City
"I've done my research. It's tough to judge how the levels compare. But it doesn't change how we prepare. We have an idea. The story will be that they're a semi-professional team. We've seen how they play in important games. Obviously it was interesting to see the conditions in some of their matches. But they're well organised. Their runs and activity on the pitch are good. But we're focused on ourselves."
Bayern debuted their new away jersey in their final Bundesliga home game of the season and have now released their red and white 2025/26 home threads, which they'll wear for the first time in Sunday's opening Club World Cup outing.
There were smiles aplenty at FCB's U.S. base when new signings Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof were unveiled to the world. "The first day was very good, the lads gave me an outstanding welcome," Bischof beamed, with his new teammate Tah adding, " I feel this familial, positive and also hungry togetherness."
Tah, Bischof in training
There was a big Bayern welcome in Orlando for new signings Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof, who were put through their paces for the first ever time in FCB colours since joining the recently-crowned Bundesliga champions. Along with Bayern's exciting new duo, Joshua Kimmich, Josip Stanišić, Aleksandar Pavlović, Serge Gnabry, Michael Olise, Leon Goretzka and João Palhinha took part in Friday's session after joining up following international duty.
Competing among some of the world's biggest footballing names, City are a bit different. They are mostly made up of players balancing full-time jobs elsewhere who have actually had to take time off work - some of it unpaid - to compete in the US. "But it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Playing at the World Cup gives us the ability to compete on a world stage and have that feeling of being a professional footballer, without being one," said 29-year-old striker Angus Kilkolly, who sells power tools for a living.
Neuer: "We want to challenge for the title!"
Manuel Neuer backed up his long-time friend and teammate in his ambition, adding: “It’s special to be here. We're going into the tournament to play successful football and we obviously want to challenge for the title too."
Müller, who leaves the club after the tournament is one of those players. “We're basically going into the tournament to win matches – and that starts with the first match," he told the club's website. "The spirit is laid down, the coach has also left no questions there. He's made it clear: we want to win the thing.”
Bayern have taken 29 players to the USA, including Thomas Müller in his final assignment with his boyhood club. Jamal Musiala, Dayot Upamecano and Minjae Kim, who missed the final weeks of the season with injury, are included, alongside new signings Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof. Seven players from the reserves and youth teams are also part of the squad: Lennart Karl, David Santos Daiber, Cassiano Kiala, Jonah Kusi-Asare, Adam Aznou, Maurice Krattenmacher and goalkeeper Klanac.
One to watch: Myer Bevan
With nine goals in 16 appearances across 2025 so far, Bevan is in red-hot form. He scored both goals in the 2-0 OFC Champions League final win over Hekari United in April, holds a Canadian passport and has a full-time job as a community football coach.
The New Zealanders may be the only amateurs in the competition but are the dominant force on home soil, winning the league 10 times since they were founded in 2004, as well as 11 of the past 13 OFC Champions Leagues. They have regularly competed at the Club World Cup, finishing third in 2014. Auckland have been in the US for over a week already and played warm-up matches against Philadelphia Union (2-0 win) and Al Ain (1-0 loss).
Auckland City are the first of Bayern's three fixtures in Group C, with games against Argentina's Boca Juniors (21 June) and Benfica of Portugal (24 June) to follow. The top two from each group advance to the knockouts, where two sides from Group D will await. Victory in the first game for Bayern will put them well on course for the next stage.
Bayern Munich begin their tilt at FIFA Club World Cup glory with their opening game of Group C against Auckland City of New Zealand in Cincinnati, Ohio on Sunday. Kick-off is at 12pm local time (6pm CEST). Stay tuned for match build-up, coverage and reaction here.
