How Tidiam Gomis has become important in RB Leipzig’s attack this season
Tidiam Gomis has gone from fringe player to genuine attacking option at RB Leipzig in the space of a few months. The 20-year-old has already made a significant impact in the 2026/27 Bundesliga season – and there are plenty of signs that his role could continue to grow.
Gomis has one goal and two assists from four league appearances this term, starting twice and coming off the bench on two further occasions. His 229 Bundesliga minutes already rank ninth among all Leipzig players, with only Antonio Nusa and Christopher Nkunku having spent more time on the pitch among the club’s attacking options.
Only Nusa, with two goals and two assists, has registered more Bundesliga goal contributions for Leipzig so far.

That represents a sizeable change from last season. Gomis managed just 347 Bundesliga minutes across the whole of 2025/26 – only the 20th-highest tally in the squad – despite making 18 appearances. Just two of those came from the start, while his solitary goal contribution was his strike against Union Berlin on Matchday 14.
So what has changed?
Opportunity has certainly played a part. Christoph Baumgartner and Yan Diomande were both among Leipzig’s top four players for Bundesliga minutes last season, but Baumgartner has since been sidelined by a long-term injury while Diomande has departed for Real Madrid.
That opened the door for Gomis – and he has taken his chance.
Martín Demichelis was particularly impressed by the youngster’s work before the campaign even began.
“He had a very good pre-season and worked really hard in a number of different positions,” said the Leipzig coach. “He can play on the right wing, the left wing or through the middle. He simply has to be ready and fight for his place in different positions. I’m very pleased with his development because you can see that he’s ready.”
That versatility is particularly valuable to Demichelis. After Gomis started and impressed with two assists against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 1, the coach explained why he was on the bench in the next fixture against Werder Bremen.
“Tidiam played well against Gladbach. I decided to go with [Johan] Bakayoko to give him an opportunity, and with Tidiam Gomis on the bench I had a player I could bring on in three different positions.”
Competition remains fierce. Nusa and Nkunku are joined by Brajan Gruda, Assan Ouédraogo, Rômulo and Bakayoko among Leipzig’s attacking alternatives, meaning regular minutes are far from guaranteed.
But Gomis is so far holding his own, and his progress has not gone unnoticed beyond Leipzig either. He earned his first call-up to France’s U21 squad this month, having previously trained with Gérald Baticle’s extended pre-Euro group in May 2025.
Having moved quickly up Leipzig’s attacking pecking order, he has given Demichelis every reason to keep trusting him.
