Holstein Kiel booked their ticket into the DFB Cup quarter-finals with a spectacular late comeback victory over their rivals Hamburg, winning 4-2 on penalties after equalising toward the end of extra-time.
Hamburg 1–1 Holstein Kiel (Kiel win 2-4 on penalties)
Goals: 1-0 Jatta 107’ (assist: Muheim), 1-1 Harres 119’
The first half was tense, with each side picking up bookings in some fiery early action. Hamburg dominated possession early on, before Kiel then grew into the game and showed that it wouldn’t be a one-sided affair. Phil Harres and Alexander Rössing-Lelesiit both missed golden chances, with neither side creating much more aside from that, in what ended up being an even first half.
It was a quiet start to the second half too, with neither side finding their attacking spark. That changed with around 20 minutes to go, with Niklas Niehoff forcing Daniel Peretz into a fantastic save after Giorgi Gocholeishvili had struck the post for Hamburg at the other end. Despite a late flurry of attacking intent from both teams, neither could find a goal, and extra-time was needed.

Harres' free-kick was worthy of winning a game, not just equalising in one. - Stuart Franklin
After a sluggish first half of extra-time during which neither side looked like scoring, the game then burst into life. Substitute Bakery Jatta tucked home Miro Muheim's mis-hit shot from close range to score what looked like the winner, given the lack of cutting edge we'd seen from both sides up until that point.
Harres had other ideas though, and whipped home a delicious free-kick with the end of extra-time just moments away. That sent the game to penalties, where Kiel were the first to miss through Marko Ivezić. Fábio Vieira made it 2-1 directly after, but that was the last penalty HSV would score, with Kiel netting their next three to claim the win.
As it happened!

He shoots first time from a pull back, but his strike is straight at the 'keeper.
Right across goal!
Dompé drives at his full-back before sliding in Muheim, who flashes the ball across the face of the goal from the byline. No-one is able to tap it home though.
Huge save!
Niehoff's first action is to arrow a shot toward the top corner of the Hamburg goal, but Peretz is equal to it, pulling out a stunning save to keep the scores level.
Off the post!
Gocholeishvili drives into the box before unleashing a low drive onto the far post. That's the closest either team has come to a goal so far.
Almost an opener
A Kiel corner swings all the way to the back post, where the ball bounces just over the bar after hitting a crowd of bodies. The last touch came off a Kiel shirt, and HSV can recover.

Half-time: Hamburg 0-0 Holstein Kiel
The first half ends all square, with little goalmouth action to shout about. Harres and Rössing-Lelesiit each missed a golden opportunity in what was a feisty first 45, but other than that neither side managed to create clear-cut opportunities.

Half-time
Tense half
With the break only a couple of minutes away, will we have a breakthrough before the whistle blows?
Lucky escape
Vušković unnecessarily intercepts a ball headed toward his own 'keeper, allowing Kiel to swing a cross in. Torunarigha manages to clear, and HSV avoid a costly error.
Momentum shift
It's now the hosts doing most of the defending, as Kiel enjoy a spell of possession.
Kiel threatening
The visitors fire in three consecutive corners but can't convert from any of them.
Big save!
Harres finds himself one-on-one with Peretz after a great run, but fires his finish straight at the Hamburg man.
Hosts in control
So far, the majority of the opening stages have been spent in the Kiel half. Will HSV find the opener?
Huge chance!
Vieira finds the run of Rössing-Lelesiit in behind and the youngster is face-to-face with Weiner. However, he can't find the back of the net, instead firing his effort against the outstretched hand of the 'keeper.
Wake-up call
Hamburg lose the ball in their own half, but luckily for them Kiel can't make the most of their breakaway and they can reset.

Straightforward

Good position
Gocholeishvili wins a free-kick to the right of the penalty area, with the hosts applying the pressure early on.
Early threat
Muheim's run in behind the Kiel defence is almost found, but the ball slides off his knee and out for a goal-kick.

Marcel Rapp on facing Hamburg
“We have to prepare well. We’ve been watching Hamburg a lot. Will they approach the game like a Bundesliga match, or will they do things a little differently? They will be high on confidence after the win over Stuttgart, so we have to be prepared for that. We know about their qualities, but we also fancy our chances. We’re certain we can beat them.”

"I was promoted to the Bundesliga with Kiel, so they're a special club to me. The fact that we're meeting again a year later is obviously very special. There's no need to fire anyone up - everyone is extremely motivated."
