Christian Kofane gives Bayer Leverkusen a crucial win at Hamburg
Bayer Leverkusen edged Hamburg 1-0 thanks to Christian Kofane's 73rd-minute strike in their rescheduled Matchday 17 fixture, meaning the Werkself keep pace in the race for the Champions League.

A long-awaited fixture finally took place at the Volksparkstadion as Hamburg hosted Leverkusen. Originally set to be played in January, snow and ice had forced a postponement of this clash between the mid-table hosts and a Werkself side desperate to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
Both managers made significant changes, with Merlin Polzin and Kasper Hjulmand each making five alterations to their starting line-ups. The visitors handed a first Bundesliga start to 18-year-old Montrell Culbreath, while HSV were without suspended left-back Miro Muheim.
Leverkusen dominate but first half ends goalless
The visitors established control from the outset, enjoying the majority of possession as Hamburg sat deep and looked to counter. Leverkusen created the first significant chance in the eighth minute when Ibrahim Maza delivered a cross from the left, finding Culbreath, whose header narrowly missed the target.
The Werkself continued to threaten and came even closer in the 12th minute when Martin Terrier side-footed Aleix García's cross against the crossbar. More drama followed when Nicolai Remberg challenged Maza in the penalty area, with referee Sören Storks initially pointing to the spot before VAR intervention confirmed the contact was outside the box.
Hamburg suffered a blow when Bakery Jatta was forced off with an injury after 29 minutes. Despite controlling proceedings with 58 perceny possession and attempting nine first-half shots, Leverkusen couldn't find a breakthrough before the interval.
Kofane breaks the deadlock
Leverkusen maintained their attacking pressure after the restart. Edmond Tapsoba had a header saved by Daniel Heuer Fernandes in the 53rd minute, while Hamburg responded through a rare attack two minutes later when Remberg's shot was well saved by Janis Blaswich.
The breakthrough finally came in the 73rd minute when Maza threaded a perfect pass to Kofane, who fired a powerful left-footed shot into the top corner from close range.
Hamburg pushed desperately for an equaliser in the closing stages, with Otto Stange forcing Blaswich into a good save in stoppage time. The hosts came agonisingly close to levelling in the 98th minute when Luka Vušković's header was brilliantly saved by Blaswich before the defender struck the crossbar with a follow-up attempt, but Leverkusen held on for a vital three points.
Man of the Match: Nicolai Remberg
Despite being on the losing side, Remberg delivered an outstanding performance that earned him the Man of the Match award. The HSV midfielder covered an impressive 11.8 kilometres - joint highest in the match alongside Exequiel Palacios - and was at the heart of Hamburg's best moments.
Remberg registered one of HSV's three shots on target with a well-struck effort in the 55th minute that forced Blaswich into action. He won numerous challenges in midfield and displayed excellent passing, achieving a pass efficiency rating of 1.48 - the second-highest among HSV players. The 23-year-old's tireless work rate and tactical discipline were instrumental in keeping his side competitive against a technically superior opponent.
