Werder Bremen announce Daniel Thioune as new head coach
Werder Bremen have confirmed the appointment of Daniel Thioune as their new head coach.
Thioune, who has been out of work since departing Fortuna Düsseldorf in October 2025, replaces Horst Steffen after the latter was relieved of his duties following Bremen's 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach last Saturday.
Upon the announcement, Bremen managing director Clemens Fritz said, "We had very good talks with Daniel. His idea of football, his manner, and his approach to our current sporting situation were decisive factors in the decision. We are convinced that we turns things around with him."
Meanwhile, Thioune himself added, "I am very much looking forward to working with the team and I am convinced that we will succeed in working together effectively and achieving the club's goals. After the very positive discussions with the management, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to join Werder."
Bremen will be the fourth coaching stop of Thioune's career. He started out at VfL Osnabrück in 2017, eventually earning promotion from the 3. Liga to Bundesliga 2, before stints at Hamburg and Düsseldorf. This is his maiden top-flight head coaching role.
He took charge of his first training season on Wednesday, while he and his new side will travel to Freiburg on Matchday 21 of the Bundesliga campaign for his first game in the hot seat.
