Thioune, who has been out of work since departing Fortuna Düsseldorf in October 2025, replaces Horst Steffen after the latter was relieved of his duties following Bremen's 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach last Saturday.

The Green-Whites are just a point outside the relegation zone, following a run of 10 games without a win. They have won just four times in 20 league games so far this season.

Upon the announcement, Bremen managing director Clemens Fritz said: "We had very good talks with Daniel. His idea of football, his manner, and his approach to our current sporting situation were decisive factors in the decision. We are convinced that we turns things around with him."

Bremen will be the fourth coaching stop of Thioune's career, but first in the top flight. The former midfielder started out at Osnabrück in 2017, eventually earning promotion from the 3. Liga to Bundesliga 2, before stints at Hamburg and Düsseldorf. He arrives at Werder having overseen 188 Bundesliga 2 games to date - narrowly missing out on promotion to the Bundesliga with Düsseldorf following a 2024 play-off defeat to Bochum.

"I'm very much looking forward to working with the team and I am convinced that we will succeed in working together effectively and achieving the club's goals," Thioune said. "After the very positive discussions with the management, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to join Werder."
