Romano Schmid departs Werder Bremen
Romano Schmid has completed a move to Italian Serie A outfit Frosinone, Werder Bremen have confirmed.
The Austrian international departs the Werderaner after seven years at the club, having joined from Red Bull Salzburg back in 2019.
Schmid gave a heartfelt message to fans of The Green-Whites upon the announcement, saying: “So much has happened here in Bremen over the years: relegation, promotion, development into a national team player and the opportunity to participate in a UEFA European Championship and a FIFA World Cup. My first son was born here. My family and I have always felt at home here. This time will always be special in my life."
Looking ahead, he continued: "Now I have the chance to play in a country I've always wanted to live in. I wish Werder Bremen, its staff, and all the fans all the best for the future."
Meanwhile, Bremen managing director Clemens Fritz explained, "With Romano’s departure, we are losing a player who has become one of the faces of our team in recent years. He has developed into a good Bundesliga and national team player in Bremen and has strongly identified with the club, the city, and the fans. However, Frosinone Calcio has made an offer that meets both our financial interests and Romano’s personal expectations. We wish him all the best for his new chapter in Italy, both professionally and personally".
Since completing his switch to Bremen, Schmid has made 192 appearances for the club, netting on 18 occasions. This past summer, he represented Austria at the FIFA World Cup, featuring four times and even scoring in his nation's opening win over Jordan as they reached the last 32.
Bremen, meanwhile, will continue their preparations for the new campaign, with LSK Hansa up in the first round of the DFB Cup on 22 August ahead of their Bundesliga bow at Freiburg on 30 August.
