The hosts entered their crucial Bundesliga clash against Union with a point to prove. Sitting in 12th place before kick-off and without a league win under new manager Niko Kovač, the pressure was mounting on the Black-and-Yellows. Union, meanwhile, arrived at Signal Iduna Park looking to build on their recent away form and climb further away from the relegation zone.

Dortmund break the deadlock

Both teams showed caution from the off, but it was Dortmund who gradually took control. The breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Julian Ryerson's speculative effort took a wicked deflection off Union's Diogo Leite, wrong-footing goalkeeper Frederik Rønnow and nestling in the net. The own goal seemed to galvanise the hosts, and they doubled their lead just before half-time. Pascal Groß - who delivered an inspired performance with four assists here - delivered an inch-perfect cross for Guirassy, who powered home a header from close range to make it 2-0.

Guirassy's second-half goal spree

The second half saw BVB turn their dominance into a rout, with Guirassy at the heart of a devastating attacking display. The Guinean striker added his second and Dortmund's third in the 75th minute, firing home from just inside the box after another assist from Groß. What followed was a remarkable eight-minute hat-trick, as Guirassy found the net again in the 80th and 83rd minutes. His fourth goal, a clinical header from Groß's pinpoint cross, took his tally to four for the evening. The striker's intelligent movement and clinical finishing left the Union defence in tatters.

Beier puts the icing on the cake

With Union reeling, Dortmund refused to take their foot off the gas. In the 89th minute, Maximilian Beier added further gloss to the scoreline, connecting with Groß's fourth assist of the night to head home and make it 6-0. The goal was a fitting end to a dominant performance that saw Dortmund record 24 shots to Union's 7, with 10 on target compared to the visitors' solitary effort.
