Dortmund travelled to the Weserstadion for the final fixture of the term knowing that a win would take them to 73 points – their best tally since 2018/19. Bremen, meanwhile, had already secured their top-flight status and were looking to sign off the campaign on a positive note in front of their home supporters.

Dortmund came flying out of the blocks and were immediately on the front foot. As early as the fourth minute, Guirassy had a shot blocked, and shortly after Mio Backhaus produced a stunning double save – first pushing away Guirassy's effort before parrying Samuele Inácio's follow-up onto the post. The Bremen goalkeeper was the standout performer of the opening period, single-handedly keeping the scoreline level against a relentless Dortmund attack as he tipped another Guirassy effort from close range over.

Bremen did have their moments – Justin Njinmah went close with a chip over Gregor Kobel, and Salim Musah was denied by Kobel in a one-on-one situation. Amos Pieper, meanwhile, had a header ruled out for offside shortly before the half-hour mark.

The second half began much as the first had ended, with Dortmund immediately threatening. Backhaus was again called into action, making a superb one-on-one save to deny Guirassy after the striker had been played clean through. Backhaus pulled off yet another remarkable stop, this time tipping away Guirassy's header from a corner.

The breakthrough Dortmund had been threatening finally arrived in the 60th minute. Julian Ryerson delivered a cross from the right, and Guirassy rose above Marco Friedl to head powerfully into the bottom corner, giving Backhaus no chance. It was Guirassy's 17th Bundesliga goal of the season and, remarkably, the seventh time he had scored the opening goal in a Bundesliga match this campaign.

Bremen attempted to respond, but Dortmund remained in control. Karim Coulibaly thought he had equalised in the 81st minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review, with Jens Stage adjudged to have been in an offside position and interfering with play.

With Bremen pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Dortmund caught them on the break in the fifth minute of injury time. Karim Adeyemi played in substitute Yan Couto, who kept his composure to slot past Backhaus and seal a 2-0 victory for the visitors.

The result meant Dortmund finished the season on 73 points while, for Bremen, it was a disappointing end to a difficult campaign, though their top-flight status had already been secured the previous weekend.

Man of the Match: Serhou Guirassy

Guirassy was the standout performer on the day. The Dortmund striker had eight shots in total – more than any other player on the pitch – and was a constant menace throughout, forcing Backhaus into a series of outstanding saves before finally breaking the deadlock with a well-taken header. He was voted Man of the Match with 41 per cent of the vote.
