Kobel joins up

A conspicuous absence on Friday's flight was that of Gregor Kobel, but don't worry. The goalkeeper has been in the States for over week after Switzerland's friendlies against Mexico and the USMNT. He stayed there instead of making an unnecessary trip back across the Atlantic and has now joined up with the rest of the squad after their arrival.

First light session

After checking into their hotel, Dortmund headed off to their training facilities for the duration of the tournament, where they're being hosted by Inter Miami. The team did a bit of work on the bikes and in the gym before a bit of time out on the pitch as they shook off their nine-hour flight. Their first full session will be on Saturday.

Pre-travel plans

Most of the focus at a tournament is on the players, but what about those behind them making sure everything runs smoothly? Dortmund have given us some insight into the role of kitman Frank Gräfen (pictured left), who's spent weeks planning for the trip to the US. "Around two tons" is what he estimates the team are shipping over to their base in Fort Lauderdale, including enough kits for the eventuality of reaching the final, around 200 sets of boots, massage benches, some 20 back-up balls (Club World Cup balls are being provided to clubs) and more across some 40 metal crates, bags, boxes and more.

Cramer proud of Dortmund's inclusion

Dortmund managing director Carsten Cramer has told the club website his thoughts at their inclusion in the tournament: "It makes us proud because it highlights what we have achieved in the course of recent years, that we occupy sixth place in the UEFA rankings and are competing with the major players. It's a nice confirmation for everyone that we haven't done as badly in the past few years as the mood around us might sometimes suggest.”

Beier back in training

After having already returned to individual training, Maximilian Beier rejoined his teammates as a part of a larger squad training session on 7 June. The young forward, after finding himself in a patch of really impressive form in March, sustained an injury in the Bundesliga showdown against Gladbach in April, missing the final few games of the season as a result.

FIFA have created an additional transfer window for the Club World Cup in which clubs can register players. The squad lists for the tournament must be submitted by 10 June. By then, it will be clear which players will be travelling to the USA. If no agreement can be reached regarding a early transfers before then, participating clubs will also be able to replace and add players during a restricted in-competition period from 27 June to 3 July within a set limit and according to specific limitations, according to FIFA's rulings.

A Klassiker on the cards?

With both Bayern and Dortmund playing in the Club World Cup, there is potential for another instalment of Der Klassiker. However, the earliest the two Bundesliga teams can meet is in the semi-finals, and that's only if one finishes first and the other second in their respective groups. If both finish first or both finish second, the would be unable to meet one another before the final.

Going the distance

After the group stage, the top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout phase, which will commence with the round of 16. The round of 16 will take place from 28 June to 1 July, followed by the quarter-finals on 4 and 5 July and the semi-finals on 8 and 9 July. The grand final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will kick off on 13 July at 9pm CET.
