Dortmund's Club World Cup fixtures and results

Recap Dortmund’s Club World Cup campaign below:

What's next for BVB?

The Dortmund squad will now enjoy some time off before they return for pre-season training, with a camp in Austria planned from 4 to 9 August. They will play a friendly against Sportfreunde Siegen on 30 June, before the traditional season opener, against Juventus, on 10 August.
camera-photo

Tournament positives

BVB's sporting director, Sebastian Kehl was philosophical about his side's departure from the United States and was taking the positives from the experience the competition offered. "We can be proud that we were among the top eight in this tournament," he said. "The team dug deep into this tournament and made a statement. So we're taking a lot of positives with us. We exceeded our goals."
camera-photo

Kovač proud

Dortmund coach Niko Kovač said that despite Sunday's disappointing defeat against Real Madrid, BVB's players should feel pride for their efforts in the United Stated during the Club World Cup. "All in all, we can leave with our heads held high. We represented BVB, but also Germany, with dignity," the tactician explained.
camera-photo

Brandt's "interesting" experience

Speaking after BVB's elimination at the hands of Real Madrid, Julian Brandt said, "In the end, we showed our courage and came close, but we would have preferred it differently." The 3-2 loss at the MetLife Stadium meant the Black and Yellows were headed back to Germany, with Brandt admitting that, "The Club World Cup was an interesting experience, something new."

With the last four in mind

Dortmund have been working hard since their arrival in the United States and after their latest training session, can now focus on a date with destiny against Real Madrid and a spot in the Club World Cup semi-finals.
camera-photo

Fresh start

Asked about Dortmund's 5-2 defeat against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League league phase last October, BVB coach Niko Kovač explained: "It was an away game in Madrid – we're on neutral ground here. There are now two different coaches in charge; there are two different approaches. We're now playing with a back three, as are Real Madrid. Apart from the fact that one or two players are still on the pitch, it has nothing to do with the game from back then. So, you can't draw any parallels at all."
camera-photo

Semi-final Klassiker?

It's certainly possible. If Dortmund beat Real Madrid and Bayern also get the better of PSG in their quarter-final on Saturday, then Germany's two representatives will meet in the last four on Wednesday 9 July in New Jersey.
camera-photo

Dortmund upping sticks

BVB held their final training session at Inter Miami's complex in Fort Lauderdale on Friday before packing up their camp and heading for New Jersey. Their quarter-final meeting with Real Madrid will be held at the MetLife Stadium there, as will both semi-finals and the final, so it makes sense to stay in the local area to reduce potential travel time and effort.

A deal to take Jamie Gittens from Dortmund to Chelsea is nearing completion, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Thursday. Gittens, 20, was close to making the move prior to the start of the FIFA Club World Cup, but the two clubs could not reach an agreement. Now all that is left to iron out are the contractual details. "The talks with Chelsea were challenging, but ultimately we are satisfied that we will, in all likelihood, be able to meet our financial requirements and have planning security," said Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

Gregor Kobel, Serhou Guirassy and Niko Kovač give their thoughts on Borussia Dortmund's FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final against Real Madrid.

Kovač discusses Bellingham

"Jobe didn't know that a second yellow card would result in a suspension. And at half-time, he wasn't even aware that he wouldn't be allowed to play in the next game – I had to tell him that. He was very disappointed and had been really looking forward to the game. But I'm sure the two will meet soon, perhaps next season in the Champions League."
camera-photo

Jobe heartbreak

Summer signing Jobe Bellingham made his third straight start against Monterrey, but a second booking of the tournament means he'll miss the showdown with brother and ex-BVB ace Jude.
camera-photo

Guirassy reaction

"It was difficult - against a good team, in a good atmosphere," Dortmund's match-winner told DAZN after the 2-1 win in Atlanta. "It's good [to score two]. I think I could have scored at least three, but I'm happy to help the team. It was a good experience [to play against Sergio Ramos]. He's a really good guy. Now I expect a very tough game [against Real Madrid], but we'll be prepared."

Dortmund reach quarter-finals!

Guirassy's first-half brace made all the difference as Dortmund survived a Monterrey fightback to reach the quarter-finals. BVB will next play Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid in New Jersey on 5 July.

Kick-off fast approaching for BVB

Waldemar Anton expects challenge against Monterrey

New Jersey the goal

Were Dortmund to overcome Monterrey and book their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament, they would face either Real Madrid or Juventus. That game would take place in New Jersey, meaning BVB would tick off another destination while in the States.

Moukoko departs

Outside of Club World Cup news, Dortmund have confirmed that academy graduate Youssoufa Moukoko has departed on a permanent basis, joining Danish champions Copenhagen. Karim Adeyemi in a determined mood ahead of Monterrey

"We've developed game by game. It's not easy here and it's not yet our limit that we want to play at. That's why we're not finished yet and are really up for the next match. We naturally want to win that one as well.”
camera-photo

Sebastian Kehl delighted with BVB's progression

“It was of course our expectation to get through this group. I believe that we improved, especially in the first period, and played significantly better than in the two previous matches. We're delighted about qualification for the round of 16. Now it’s onto Monterrey on Tuesday evening in Atlanta, a team Borussia Dortmund have never played against before. We’re up for it, we’re taking on the challenge – and we’re determined to progress to the next round."

"I think it was a difficult game," BVB forward Karim Adeyemi told DAZN after the Ulsan victory in Cincinnati. "It's really hot here and at the end we're happy to win 1-0. We have to keep working hard because we know we can play better."

Group F winners!

Daniel Svensson's first-half winner against Ulsan, coupled with Fluminense's 0-0 draw with Mamelodi, sends Dortmund through in first place with seven points from a possible nine. They'll face the runner-up of Group E in the last 16 in Atlanta on 1 July.
camera-photo

Kovač on Ulsan

"Ulsan is a team that has already played 20 league matches and has yet to earn a point in this tournament. We all know that the South Koreans are a very proud nation, and they certainly want to put in their best performance tomorrow to take home some points. For us, that means we're expecting a very difficult game tomorrow."

Group F permutations

BVB can win the group, finish second (their current standing on goal difference) or go out in third, depending on how they fare against already eliminated Ulsan. A draw or better will send them through, no matter what happens between current leaders Fluminense and third-placed Mamelodi. However, a defeat would open the door to Mamelodi potentially climbing into the top two and sending Kovač's crew home early.

Kovač: "It wasn't our best game"

“I’m sweating like I just came out of a sauna," the Dortmund head coach said in a post-match interview with DAZN. "The conditions were tough for both teams, but the others are used to it. We certainly didn’t play our best game, but that wasn’t really possible today. We made too many simple mistakes, and things definitely didn’t go smoothly. The important thing is that we won the game. Nothing else really matters anyway.”

Bellingham reaction to Matchday 2 win

“It was a tough game and an important win against a really good opponent," the 19-year-old told DAZN after the final whistle. What's up on Wednesday?

Dortmund flew back down to Fort Lauderdale after yesterday's match. Today will be a much calmer day as they focus on recovering with just a light session in the morning. They next play on Saturday against Mamelodi Sundowns in Cincinnati.
camera-photo

Kobel targets improvement

"You have to be honest and say they were better than us. Perhaps the time zone, maybe the early kick-off, which we're not used to, played a part - but we don't want to make excuses. It's an open tournament with a lot of good teams. It was important to get at least a point. Now we need to recuperate and look at how to rediscover the kind of form we ended the Bundesliga season in."
camera-photo

Kovač reacts to Fluminense draw

"It's the minimum we set out to do. It certainly wasn't our best game, but that's normal in these openers. You have to remember it's been a month since the Bundesliga season ended. The Brazilians are in the middle of their domestic campaign. They're in a different rhythm. You have to take all that into account. Now it's about the next two games and securing first or second place in the group."
camera-photo

Bellingham debut

In addition to gaining a point in Group F, another positive for BVB was a competitive debut for summer signing Jobe Bellingham, who replaced Pascal Groß in the 59th minute to make his Dortmund bow three years and nine months after his older brother Jude did so for the club.

Sebastian Kehl on Fluminense

“We’ve gathered information and watched videos. Of course, we also have a few scouts on site who are providing us with information, both individually and in terms of group tactics. We’ve done our homework. Nevertheless, we’ll focus on our game. If we perform to our potential and play with the intensity we’re capable of, we’ll have a good chance of winning on Tuesday.”

In the approximately 30-degree Fort Lauderdale heat, the players were put through their paces by Kovač and his team as the players trained with the ball for the first time since arriving.
camera-photo

Kobel joins up

A conspicuous absence on Friday's flight was that of Gregor Kobel, but don't worry. The goalkeeper has been in the States for over week after Switzerland's friendlies against Mexico and the USMNT. He stayed there instead of making an unnecessary trip back across the Atlantic and has now joined up with the rest of the squad after their arrival.

After checking into their hotel, Dortmund headed off to their training facilities for the duration of the tournament, where they're being hosted by Inter Miami. Pre-travel plans

Most of the focus at a tournament is on the players, but what about those behind them making sure everything runs smoothly? Dortmund have given us some insight into the role of kitman Frank Gräfen (pictured left), who's spent weeks planning for the trip to the US. "Around two tons" is what he estimates the team are shipping over to their base in Fort Lauderdale, including enough kits for the eventuality of reaching the final, around 200 sets of boots, massage benches, some 20 back-up balls (Club World Cup balls are being provided to clubs) and more across some 40 metal crates, bags, boxes and more.

Cramer proud of Dortmund's inclusion

It's a nice confirmation for everyone that we haven't done as badly in the past few years as the mood around us might sometimes suggest.”

After having already returned to individual training, Maximilian Beier rejoined his teammates as a part of a larger squad training session on 7 June. Dortmund will be hoping their No. 9, who was the Bundesliga's form striker in the second half of the season and the top scorer in the UEFA Champions League, will continue his frantic goalscoring record in the Club World Cup.

Registration deadlines

FIFA have created an additional transfer window for the Club World Cup in which clubs can register players. The squad lists for the tournament must be submitted by 10 June. By then, it will be clear which players will be travelling to the USA. If no agreement can be reached regarding a early transfers before then, participating clubs will also be able to replace and add players during a restricted in-competition period from 27 June to 3 July within a set limit and according to specific limitations, according to FIFA's rulings.

A Klassiker on the cards?

With both Bayern and Dortmund playing in the Club World Cup, there is potential for another instalment of Der Klassiker. However, the earliest the two Bundesliga teams can meet is in the semi-finals, and that's only if one finishes first and the other second in their respective groups. If both finish first or both finish second, the would be unable to meet one another before the final.

Going the distance

After the group stage, the top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout phase, which will commence with the round of 16. The round of 16 will take place from 28 June to 1 July, followed by the quarter-finals on 4 and 5 July and the semi-finals on 8 and 9 July. The grand final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will kick off on 13 July at 9pm CET.
