Fabio Silva rescues point for Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker at Bayern Munich after Harry Kane misses penalty
Fabio Silva rescued a late point for Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker at rivals Bayern Munich after Ballon d'Or winner Harry Kane had missed a second-half penalty for the Bundesliga champions.
Bayern Munich 2-2 Borussia Dortmund
Goals: 1-0 Laimer 38’, 1-1 Guirassy 60’ (assist: Chukwuemeka), 2-1 Upamecano 60’ (assist: Kane), 2-2 Silva 89’ (assist: Karetsas)
Missed penalty: Kane 57’
Bayern made six changes from the team that beat Magdeburg in the DFB Cup in midweek, bringing Kane and midfield metronome Joshua Kimmich back into the fold. Alphonso Davies, Minjae Kim, Dayot Upamecano and Aleksander Pavlović were also restored.
As for Dortmund, Niko Kovač made just the one change to the team that defeated Werder Bremen in the cup, with Daniel Svensson replacing Julian Ryerson.
Bellingham goal ruled out before Laimer strike
Chances were few and far between in the early stages, with Bayern - predictably perhaps - dominating possession while Dortmund sat deep in an effort to keep the champions at bay.
Michael Olise struck the crossbar after 10 minutes, but Dortmund thought they had opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Jobe Bellingham slotted home after Upamecano's loose pass was intercepted. However, the goal was ruled out by VAR for a foul by Carney Chukwuemeka on goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.
Moments later, Bayern were ahead. A misplaced pass from Felix Nmecha was pounced on by Olise, who released Konrad Laimer with a sumptuous through ball. Gregor Kobel saved the Austrian's initial effort, but Laimer slottted home the rebound to open the scoring seven minutes before the break.
Kane misses penalty in incident-packed second half
Bayern were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute after Nmecha blocked Kane's shot with his arm, but the England captain missed the chance to put his side back in front, sending his spot-kick against the crossbar.
Kane and Bayern were punished four minutes later when Nico Schlotterbeck set up Chukwuemeka, who squared for Serhou Guirassy to slam a low shot past Urbig and restore parity.
Dortmund were not on level terms for long, though. Kimmich's 66th-minute cross found Kane at the back post, and the 33-year-old headed the ball back across goal for Upamecano to prod home Bayern's second of the game.
Silva salvages point
Kane twice went close to extending Bayern's lead, hitting the post again in the 75th minute before rifling a shot narrowly wide three minutes later.
Dortmund kept pushing forward in the closing stages and were rewarded when Konstantinos Karetsas charges down Pavlović's clearance, allowing Silva to fire a low shot into the far corner and send the Dortmund fans wild.
Second-half substitute Lennart Karl struck the crossbar in stoppage time, but the game ended all square.
Man of the Match: Konrad Laimer
Laimer opened the scoring with his first Bundesliga goal since March, converting the rebound after Kobel had saved his initial effort.
The Austrian was one of Bayern's biggest threats in the final third, deservedly claiming the Man of the Match award.
