Harry Kane helps send Bayern Munich past Boca Juniors into FIFA Club World Cup knockouts
Harry Kane scored his first FIFA Club World Cup goal and made another as Bayern Munich booked their place in the last 16 with victory over Argentina's Boca Juniors in Miami.
After swatting aside Auckland City in their Club World Cup Group C opener, Bayern made an ominous start at Hard Rock Stadium. Michael Olise scored directly from a corner in the seventh minute, only for the goal to be ruled out upon VAR review for a foul against Serge Gnabry. Kane miscued following another devilish bit of play from Olise, before making amends with a tidy left-footed finish from inside the area to give the Bundesliga champions a deserved lead. Kingsley Coman was unable to add an instant second after more fantastic build-up play, while Gnabry was denied by a strong recovery challenge when racing through on the Boca goal. Kevin Zenón gave the Argentine side momentary respite with a couple of fierce strikes at Bayern captain Manuel Neuer, his second after Agustín Marchesín had thwarted Olise following a breakaway one-on-one. The Boca stopper also blocked at the feet of Kane, whose last act of a one-sided first half was to land a free-kick onto the roof of the net.
Boca improved after the restart, but their equaliser still fell somewhat against the run of play. After Olise lost out on the edge of the Boca penalty area, the yellow shirts broke and found Miguel Merentiel, who beat Jonathan Tah and Josip Stanišić before firing high past Neuer. Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany shuffled his pack in a bid to wrestle back the initiative, but the Belgian's plans were disrupted by an injury to second-half substitute Jamal Musiala, scorer of a hat-trick from the bench against Auckland. Bayern found a way, though, as Konrad Laimer's tenacious work helped Kane collect possession and touch off a pass for Olise to sweep in a fitting winnner. Laimer then had an effort chalked off for offside, while Olise tickled the side netting with an injury-time free-kick as Bayern booked their place in the knockouts with room to spare. As long as the Bavarians avoid defeat to Benfica on 24 June, they'll progress as section winners.

Bayern retake the lead!
There it is! Laimer makes his presence felt in the Boca box as a loose ball breaks to Kane. He touches it off for Olise, who sweeps a fabulous finish into the bottom corner. A fine, fine strike by a sensational player!
Upamecano's on to shore up the Bayern defence, in a move that sees Stanišić move out to the left. Leroy Sané, who'll join Galatasaray on 1 July, is also on. Guerreiro and Coman head off. Boca respond with a pair of changes of their own.
Olise loses out to swarm of yellow shirts on the edge of the Boca area. The Argentines tear forward and work it up to Merentiel, who beats two Bayern defenders before sending a thumping finish past Neuer.
Like-for-like from Kompany, with Aleksandar Pavlović and Jamal Musiala, who scored a hat-trick off the bench against Auckland, on for Goretzka and Gnabry.
Kane pounces on a deflected ball in the Boca box, but his shot on the turn is blocked behind for a corner that comes to nothing.

Leading and having enjoyed 72 percent possession in the first 45, Bayern are unchanged. Boca also line up as they were...
Half-time: Bayern 1-0 Boca
Kane's goal is the difference at the Hard Rock Stadium at the break. Bayern have been brilliant, the Group C leaders also having one ruled out and creating plenty more openings to boot. So far, so good - and Kompany still has the likes of Musiala and Müller to call on in the second half...
Olise and Kane stand over the ball after Gnabry is upended 20 yards from goal. Kane steps up, the England forward planting his effort onto the roof of the net.

Neuer made to work
Guerreiro concedes a free-kick on the corner of the Bayern area after getting in a tangle with Kevin Zenón. The Boca midfielder lifts the resultant set-piece over the Bayern wall, but Neuer is able to punch clear.

Through the middle
Gnabry's sent in on the Boca goal, but a yellow shirt puts in a crucial recovery challenge to clear the impending danger.
23'
Total domination
Bayern have been superb in Miami. They're playing the game on their terms and almost exclusively in the Boca half. No hint of any post-season fatigue whatsoever.
19'
Nearly two!
It's one-way traffic as Olise finds Gnabry on the right-hand side of the area. He flashes in a cross for Coman in the box, but the Frenchman fails to turn it home. Huge let-off for Boca, who were all at sea again.
17'
Kane with the opener!
You can't keep a good man down! Kimmich's corner is punched cleared, but Bayern recycle possession. The ball's worked out to the right for Laimer and whipped into the box towards Coman. A defender blocks it out to Kane, who finds the bottom corner with a controlled finish on his left foot. It has been coming!
Boca get away with one as Kane completely misses his attempt to convert Olise's low ball into the six-yard area. Very unlike the Bayern man, but the German giants do win a corner moments later...
13'
From range
Bayern come again with Coman, who balloons over. Rough start for Boca. They just can't get a foothold in the game.

Bayern continue to hog the ball, with Coman already making a real nuisance of himself on the left-hand side.

Knockouts goal
Bayern will be through to the round of 16 with a win in Miami, with a game against Benfica to spare.
Kompany's pre-match take
"It's an 'away' game, we won't underestimate them," Bayern's head coach told DAZN just now. "It's a different challenge, but Bayern didn't get to where they are today without games like these."
Former Bayern midfielder Stefan Effenberg has told the club's website how Boca are going to be "a tough nut to crack". The now 56-year-old added: "They're hard, robust and always go to the limit. They're awkward opponents who can hurt you in all areas. Bayern have to be ready for that."
With defender Nicolas Figal out after his red card against Benfica, Lautaro Di Lollo is drafted in. Tomás Belmonte deputises for the suspended Ander Herrera in midfield, but Argentine striker Edinson Cavani is missing through injury.
Three changes for the record champions, with Konrad Laimer preferred to Sacha Boey at right-back, Leon Goretzka in for Aleksandar Pavlović in central midfield and Serge Gnabry replacing Thomas Müller in the No.10 role. Jamala Musiala, who hit a hat-trick from the bench against Auckland, is among the substitutes once more.
Kingsley Coman already has his sights set on the final. "After scoring the first goal of the competition, I hope I can maybe write some more history by scoring the last in the final," he told the Bayern website. The Frenchman, who is fast approaching 10 years as a Bayern player, was the match-winner in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League final against boyhood club PSG before helping the Bavarians win the subsequent Club World Cup.
"Obviously it's a step up in quality, but we'll prepare for it the same way we did against Auckland and every other team we play," Bayern's No.9 said prior to tonight's clash with the Argentinian giants. "They'll give us a great fight and do everything they can to upset us. We have to be prepared."
Russo on enforced changes in defence after Nicolás Figal's red card
"Figal's sending off limits us a bit. We'll see how the new guys are, the guys from the club, they trained well yesterday, they trained well on Tuesday. They are available and we'll see how they are. There are alternatives as well, playing with two left-footed centre-backs. It's been a long time since we played with two left-footers. At that time people asked me why two left-backs, and I told them that when I played with two right-backs nobody said anything. Nothing is simple and it has to do with where we are, how we are and the opposition we face."
"They play very well, their full-backs push up high. Müller is key, and there are many details to watch. We're talking about a team that is important [...] a team that you watch all year round, not just now. We're constantly up to date because today's football demands it and we look at the other team, just as they look at us."
"Jamal Musiala and Dayot Upamecano hadn't played for a long time. We're very happy they're back and fit. Integration is an important topic, so we need to see. Apart from them, everyone's 100 percent fit. It's about healthy competition and tactics."
"They're a very dangerous team in transition. They believe in their moments. The team's spirit is good. They also have quality and are a very good team. We've got a lot of respect for Boca, but we're focusing on ourselves and want to bring our qualities to the fore."
"We know a lot of Argentinian players in Europe. It's a kind of football we understand. There will be emotions in the game. We watched Boca's game against Benfica, where there were lots of emotions on show. It might feel a bit like an away game for us [in Miami], but we want to be Bayern Munich."
The time difference to Europe may confuse things a bit, but Thursday is the eve of Bayern's second group game against Boca Juniors. They'll be holding a training session in Orlando in the morning before heading to Fort Lauderdale mid-afternoon. Vincent Kompany will then hold his pre-match press conference at at 6.45pm local time (12.45am CEST) ahead of Friday night's game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Neuer talks Boca prep
"We've been able to recharge and step up preparations [for the Boca game]," the Bayern stopper told the club website on Wednesday. "We do our analysis of the opposition and know exactly what we need. The intensity is also always a bit higher, and the day before the game it drops again a little, especially with the temperatures here. We're seeing how teams are approaching games and handling the conditions. The usual suspects from Europe are the favourites, but you can't underestimate the South Americans."

Musiala on top
What a return to first-team football Jamal Musiala enjoyed in the United States, the 22-year-old scoring a hat-trick off the bench as Bayern swept past Auckland City in the opening game of Group C. Needless to say, after that feat, the Germany international currently leads the scoring charts at these FIFA Club World Cup finals.
Kim training separately
Minjae Kim is continuing to recover from an Achilles problem that has troubled the defender since March and the 28-year-old was the only player to train apart from the group in Orlando during Bayern's latest team workout.
Boca striker Edinson Cavani is hoping to recover in time to face Bayern after the Uruguayan star sat out his team's 2-2 draw against Benfica with a calf problem he sustained in May. "He's taking things day by day," coach Miguel Ángel Russo explained of the 38-year-old, who local media say may have been held back from returning on Monday to be fresh for the blockbuster against Bayern.
He may have failed to get on the scoresheet in Bayern's one-sided win against Auckland, but you can bet Harry Kane will be hungry to open his Club World Cup account this weekend. The English marksman ended his latest Bundesliga campaign as the division's top scorer for a second successive year and there's no doubt Boca Juniors will be more than wary of the super striker when the teams meet at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Russo back in the hot seat
Coach Miguel Ángel Russo began his third stint at the helm of Boca Juniors just a fortnight ago. After overseeing a Copa Libertadores win with the Buenos Aires-based side in 2007, the 69-year-old former midfielder returned to help Boca to an Argentinian top-flight and League Cup double in 2020. His third spell began with Monday's 2-2 draw against Benfica.
The last time Bayern faced Boca in a competitive game, an extra-time goal from Sammy Kuffour settled the 2001 Intercontinental Cup in the Bavarian giants' favour in an encounter that saw Boca finish with 10 men.
Fresh from scoring goal numbers 249 and 250 for Bayern against Auckland, Thomas Müller insisted, “We played well, played seriously and played with intensity,” during his side's opening game in the tournament, which produced a 10-0 win. Buoyed by that impressive brace in Cincinnati, the Raumdeuter - in his last hurrah with Bayern - will be looking to add to his club-leading 753 appearances against Boca next.
Boca's veteran midfielder Ander Herrera had already suffered various muscular injuries in his brief Boca career to date, and the 35-year-old limped off with another in his team's 2-2 draw against Benfica on Monday. The Bilbao native was then red-carded for comments made to the referee during the game so will be suspended for the Bayern encounter, as will defender Nicolás Figal, who was sent off during a match the Argentinians had led 2-0.
The France winger also produced a star turn in Bayern's opening Club World Cup match. Here's the best of his skills, tricks and dribbles in his debut campaign in Germany's top flight.
