Borussia Mönchengladbach appoint Alexander Blessin as head coach
Borussia Mönchengladbach have appointed former St. Pauli boss Alexander Blessin as their new head coach.
Blessin, who joins the Foals on a contract until 2028, replaces Eugen Polanski, who was relieved of his duties following Borussia’s 5-0 defeat at Freiburg on Matchday 3.
Jan-Moritz Lichte oversaw Saturday’s 4-3 defeat at home to Mainz, having been placed in temporary charge following Polanski’s exit.

Blessin began his coaching career at RB Leipzig, enjoying spells with the club’s U17 and U19 sides before taking charge of Belgian top-flight club Oostende in his first senior coaching role.
He joined Serie A outfit Genoa in January 2022 but left after less than a year at the helm, eventually taking charge of Union Saint-Gilloise in July 2023.
After securing the Belgian cup and a runners-up top-flight finish with the Brussels outfit, Blessin was appointed head coach of newly promoted FC St. Pauli ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
He helped the Hamburg club preserve their Bundesliga status that season but was unable to stave off relegation in 2025/26, leading to his departure.
