Recap the round of 16 action as it happened below!
Full-time: Karlsruhe 2-2 Augsburg - Augsburg win 5-4 on penalties
The Bundesliga team are through to the quarter-finals! Vargas' last-minute goal send the match to penalties, where the visitors held their nerve to progress.
An extra 30 minutes are required here in Karlsruhe to separate the two teams.
85' Extra time beckons
Chances have been few and far between since that Karlsruhe equaliser. It looks like this one is going to extra time...
54' - Karlsruhe equalise!
Game on! Gouweleeuw tries to clear a cross from the left but gets his feet mixed up and allows the ball through his legs. It falls perfectly for Schleusener, who doesn't need to break stride to sweep the ball in from close range. 1-1 now!
46' - Peeeeeeeep!
The second half is under way in Karlsruhe.
Half-time: Kalrsruhe 0-1 Augsburg
After an even opening, the course of the game swung from one side to the other in the space of just three minutes. Dahmen's penalty save kept the score at 0-0 before Essende's header put Augsburg in front. The home side are by no means out of this yet though. A big second half coming up!
Koudossou floats in a cross from the left and Essende ghosts in front of his marker to head Augsburg in front from just inside the six-yard box! It could have been 1-0 to Karlsruhe just moments ago, but as things stand it's 1-0 to Augsburg!
37' Penalty saved!
Wanitzek aims his spot-kick down the middle, expecting goalkeeper Dahmen to dive one way or the other. He doesn't move, however, and the ball flies straight towards his hands. As comfortable a penalty save as you're likely ever to see!
35' - Penalty to Karlsruhe!
Matsima dawdles on the ball while trying to clear an attack, eventually catching a Karlsruhe player on the foot instead of the ball. A clear penalty.
23' - First chance for Augsburg
Claude-Maurice gets into a pocket of space inside the box, shifts his feet quickly and gets a shot away. It looks like it's heading for the top corner but deflects off a defender's leg and goes behind for a corner.
1' - Late games under way
The ball is rolling in the final two last-16 matches as Leipzig host Frankfurt and Karlsruhe take on Augsburg.
Last eight almost complete
So Cologne and Wolfsburg join Leverkusen, Bielefeld, Bremen and Stuttgart in the quarter-finals, with just two spots left.
Full-time: Cologne 2-1 Hertha Berlin
Cologne deny the visitors a penalty shoot-out by scoring one of their own in extra-time stoppage-time. Ljubicic ended up being the story of the match against 10-men Hertha, and Cologne are into the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup for the first time since 2010.
Ernst is finally breached and Ljubicic shows a steely mentality to step up and slot home after his earlier miss. That could be that just before the shoot-out.
118' Penalty to Cologne!
In his panic to clear the ball, substitute Gustav Christensen swipes at a clearance and takes down Kainz for a clear penalty. Will we see another Ernst wonder save?
117' Wow Ljubicic
The Austrian almost atones for his open goal miss with a stunning strike. He carries the ball into Hertha's final third and unleashes a superb strike that Ernst gets down brilliantly to stop. From the corner he makes another fantastic save from a snap shot.
112' Cologne getting closer
Downs draws a wonder save from Ernst as he almost turns a hopeful ball into the box into a goal. From the corner a header just misses.
108' Hertha improving
Hertha are now looking the better side shooting towards the Südkurve and win a corner that goes to waste.
Half-time in extra-time: Cologne 1-1 Hertha Berlin
The teams swap sides with Cologne well on top in the first 15 minutes of extra time.
103' Penalty? No!
Cologne and Struber are fuming as a Ljubicic cross hits an arm in the box but it's instantly waved away, likely because it was too close to the player's body.
100' How are Cologne not ahead?!
A cross to the far post goes all the way through for Ljubicic to tap in and he somehow treads on the ball before it's bundled out of play.
Both teams make two changes as Marco Rose takes out Castello Lukeba and Kevin Kampl from the 5-1 loss to Wolfsburg and brings in Nicolas Seiwald and Arthur Vermeeren. Dino Toppmöller takes out Arthur Theate and Igor Matanović for Nathaniel Brown and Hugo Ekitiké.
Extra time starts with a bang as Kainz bursts into the Hertha box from kick off and goes down. He doesn't appeal for a penalty and the referee waves it off.
Karlsruhe vs. Augsburg - more on those teams
Jess Thorup makes three changes from the 1-0 win over Bochum. Dahmen starts in goal over Labrović while Schlotterbeck returns from suspension to replace Bauer and Tietz comes in for Rexhbecaj. There's just one change for the hosts from their 3-1 defeat to Hamburg - Jensen in for Conté.
It's been a cagey and tight second half. Will there be a late twist in the tale?
90' Almost four!
Kaminski latches onto Arnold's pass and lifts the ball over the advancing Baumann, but it drops the wrong side of the post.
85' Wolfsburg seal the deal!
Yannick Gerhardt adds a third goal, the Wolfsburg sub firing home following a quickly taken free-kick. The Wolves are going through to the quarters; Hoffenheim are heading out...
67' Wolfsburg at the double!
Long way back for Hoffenheim now as Wind buries Baku's inch-perfect cross with a confident 11-yard finish.
63' Breakthrough in Wolfsburg!
Denis Vavro forces the opener, helped by a rare mistake by Baumann. He let the defender's deflected striker slip through his grasp.
Half-time! Cologne 1-1 Hertha
Cologne are right back in this. They fell behind, but levelled not long after Zeefuik's sending off. It could be a long second half for Hertha...
Maehle hammers a shot against the bar on the stroke of half-time. Koulierakis tries to turn in the loose ball, but Baumann's there again with another excellent save.
44' Baumann to the rescue!
Great reactions from the Hoffenheim goalkeeper to prevent Wolfsburg taking the lead after Baku's cross had taken a wicked deflection off Samassékou.
34' Off the bar!
Great effort from the edge of the area by Finkgräfe, and a huge let-off for Hertha.
30' Cologne are level!
The man advantage tells. A corner causes all sorts of problems in the Hertha box, with Niederlechner unwittingly getting the final touch to deflect the ball past his own goalkeeper.
25' Red card in Cologne!
Huge blow for Hertha as Zeefuik is dismissed for violent conduct after shoving Lemperle and butting heads with Hübers. The visitors are down to 10 men.
22' Wolfsburg chance!
Baku sends in a teasing cross that's helped on by Fischer. Tomás is sliding in to, but can't touch it goalwards.
12' Hertha goal!
The capital club lead in Cologne. Scherhant is brought down in the box by Pauli, and Maza steps up to send Schwäbe the wrong way from the penalty spot.
1' Under way!
The ball's rolling in the two early kick-offs!
Cologne vs. Hertha - more on those teams
Finkgräfe and Thielmann replace Paqarada and Waldschmidt in the only two changes to the Cologne team that drew with Hannover. Hertha's Cristian Fiél names the same XI that started the 3-1 win over Magdeburg.
Wolfsburg vs. Hoffenheim - more on those teams
Wolfsburg are unchanged from the 5-1 win in Leipzig. As for Hoffenheim, Ilzer makes four changes to the team that lost 2-0 to Mainz. Kadeřábek, Nsoki, Bruun Larsen and Tabaković drop to the bench, with Gendrey, Arthur Chaves, Samassékou and Moerstedt handed starts.
Gerhard Struber on Hertha
"It's a different competition but the same opponent. We know what sort of things to expect, how individuals can change the game with their quality. We need to go to the limit as a team. Hertha like to have possession. It's important for us to have control and dominance, but also being solid, aggressive and passionate."
"They gained a lot of confidence with the terrific away win in Leipzig. They have a lot of speed in attack, a lot of lively, fast players. They’re a side who have found some form. They’re our opponents and we just have to be familiar with their structure and their qualities, but it’s more important that we prepare in such a way that we’re in a position to produce a better performance than the last one in Mainz."
"We’ve obviously noticed the change of coach and the slightly different style of play. They got off to a flying start with the win over Leipzig and then they have three away matches in a row – this is the third one. You already see that the emphasis is being placed on other things, that there’s a different approach: a very agile style of play, aggressive pressing, very intense shifts, direct attacking play, a high tempo. It’s not all going to happen overnight, that’s clear."
"We need a good squad and a great crowd. Those are factors that I back the team and the fans to produce. We need to lure the opponent into more duels."
"Being in the quarter-finals is our big goal. Karlsruhe are a very well-structured team who are dangerous from crosses and set pieces. It'll be a new and exciting challenge."
"We are working hard ahead of the cup game tomorrow and want to experience that winning feeling again. We want to tackle this situation but need to believe in ourselves in order to do that. I know that the boys want this. We need to try and fix this together and I know we can do that."
"It will be a difficult game, we are in a good dynamic. The situation at Leipzig is understandable. Things are not going so well due to a number of injuries. But if you look at the first XI - and that is what matters - they have a top team on the pitch. It's do or die, the winner stays. We want to stay in the DFB Cup over the winter."
The last-16 action continues on Wednesday, with Cologne hosting Bundesliga 2 rivals Hertha Berlin and Wolfsburg up against Hoffenheim in an all-Bundesliga early kick-off. Augsburg face a potential banana skin away to second-tier Karlsruhe, before RB Leipzig meet Eintracht Frankfurt in a repeat of the 2022/23 final. Stay tuned!
Full-time: Bayern 0-1 Leverkusen
The holders advance at the expense of Bundesliga leaders Bayern. The hosts were reduced to 10 men as early as the 17th minute following Neuer's sending off, and the numerical imbalance told when Tella headed home with 21 minutes remaining.
Ducksch's set-piece deliveries have been causing the visitors problems all game long. His latest yields a likely winner as Anthony Jung converts from close range with possibly the last kick of the game...
90'+1 Woodwork!
Frimpong races away and strikes the crossbar, before the linesman's flag goes up for offside against the Dutchman.
90' Additional time
Will Leverkusen hold on to send Bayern out? Can Bremen avoid extra-time...?
84' Lost roll of the dice
With time running out, Kompany sends on Mathys Tel in attack. Defender Minjae Kim makes way...
82' Route one!
Peretz pings a long ball into the path of Gnabry, but his shot is charged down. Bayern are not out of this yet...
76' No penalty!
Bremen appeal for a possible handball offence against Darmstadt's Vukotić, but it's not given and there's no VAR check, either.
73' Bayern changes
Serge Gnabry's on for Coman, who just took a blow to the face. There's also a change at right-back, with Sascha Boey on for Laimer and in midfield, where Goretzka makes way for the returning Aleksandar Pavlović.
69' Leverkusen goal!
Tella's not been on long, but he rises to meet a trademark Grimaldo cross and head past Peretz for 1-0. Funny how things pan out!
61' Tella on
The Nigeria international replaces Schick, with Bayer once again without a recognised striker. Arthur's also come on for Mukiele at right-back.
60' Schick concern
The in-form sub has a calf problem. Alonso will have to make a change...
59' From downtown!
Corredor stings the palms of Zetterer from distance. Lidberg is waiting to pounce on the follow-up, but the Darmstadt man is in an offside position. Warning shot for Bremen!
51' Wirtz!
Great opening for Bayer, but Wirtz can't direct his effort from a searching right-wing cross on target. Peretz has yet to be tested since Neuer's sending off.
47' Werder on the attack!
Also under way again in Bremen, with Werder straight on the attack. Schmid meets a Ducksch corner, but Schuhen shows great reactions to block his effort.
46' Leverkusen change
And it's a positive - striker Patrik Schick, with six goal in his last four games, is on for midfielder Robert Andrich.
Half-time: Bayern 0-0 Leverkusen
Bayern are a man down, but they're not out. If anything, they've created the better chances since losing Manuel Neuer to a red card in the 17th minute. Will Alonso shuffle his pack?
Musiala slips in Laimer, before Xhaka slides in to stop the Austrian getting off a shot from inside the area. Bayern have not looked like a team down to 10 men in the last 15 minutes or so...
Half-time: Bremen 0-0 Darmstadt
Werder have huffed and puffed, but haven't been able to blow the Darmstadt door down.
The Bayern midfielder touches a free-kick goalwards, but Kovář is able to claw the ball out from under the bar.
43' Half chance!
Stark directs a Ducksch free-kick goalwards, but it's blocked. It wouldn't have counted, anyway, as the ball clearly came off the Bremen defender's hand.
39' Chances!
Coman heads over from a corner in Munich. Over in Bremen, meanwhile, Stage has just thundered a long-range effort narrowly past the Darmstadt upright.
35' Close to another red
This one in Bremen as goalkeeper Michael Zetterer escapes with a caution after upending Lidberg outside the box.
30' Uphill battle?
That was Neuer's first career red card. Bayern have been camped deep in their own half ever since.
17' Neuer sent off!
Frimpong's pace takes him beyond the Bayern defence as he chases a long ball. Neuer comes charging out of his box, but doesn't make contact with the ball at all, instead body-checking Frimpong to the ground. The referee doesn't hesitate in showing Neuer a straight red card. Daniel Peretz is coming on, with Sané sacrificed.
12' Chance in Munich!
And very nearly the opening goal. Bayern don't deal with a ball into the area, but Wirtz sends his effort narrowly past the post.
1' Here we go again!
Huge game in Munich between Bayern and Leverkusen. Werder are also under way against former coach Florian Kohfeldt and Darmstadt of Bundesliga 2.
More action on the way
There are two more last-16 ties being played today, with Bayern against Leverkusen the headline fixture. Elsewhere, Werder Bremen take on second division side Darmstadt.
Full-time: Bielefeld 3-1 Freiburg
What an upset! Third-tier side Bielefeld make sure their name is in the hat for the quarter-final draw after defeating Freiburg. The away side, 2-0 down at the interval, looked to have clawed their way back into it when Gregoritsch pulled a goal back midway through the second half, but a thundering effort from Oppie in the closing stages put an emphatic end to all that and sends Bielefeld through to the last eight!
Stuttgart cruise into the quarter-finals after dominating from start to finish. First-half goals from Millot and Chase set the course for the victory, with Woltemade's well-taken effort after the break sealing the deal for Sebastian Hoeneß's side.
Is this the final nail in Freiburg's coffin? Bielefeld win the ball on the halfway line and the ball is quickly worked over to the left to Oppie. He charges into the box and unleashes an unstoppable left-footed strike high into the net at the near post. An absolute rocket!
63' Freiburg back in it!
Game on! Gregoritsch atones for his earlier error in causing the penalty by leaping highest to meet a long ball into the box, heading in from close range to make it 2-1 now!
60' Stuttgart score again!
This is surely game, set and match for Stuttgart now. Woltemade races through on goal, holds off his marker, goes around the goalkeeper and slots the ball into the empty net.
46' Peeeeeep!
We're under way again in both matches currently taking place.
Half-time: Bielefeld 2-0 Freiburg
This was certainly not the scoreline the visitors would have anticipated at kick-off! Freiburg started well enough and were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute, but Muslija's initial effort and follow-up attempt on the rebound were both saved by Bielefeld goalkeeper Kersken. The third-tier outfit then took the lead via Lannert's sensational long-distance effort before Kania added another from the spot. Freiburg will need a BIG second-half performance to come back here.
Stuttgart have been the better side throughout the first half and deservedly take a two-goal lead in at the break. Regensburg can't be faulted for their commitment and willingness to cover ground, but there is a clear difference in quality between the two teams.
Freiburg's Gregoritsch is penalised for handling an attempted Bielefeld shot at goal and a spot-kick is awarded. Julian Kania makes no mistake and smashes it home to double his side's lead.
29' Bielefeld goal!
Is an upset on the cards? The third division team have the lead against Freiburg and what a beauty it is! Bielefeld take a short corner and the ball is worked from the right into the middle, with the unmarked Lannert receiving possession about 30 yards from goal. He sends a looping, curling shot from distance into the goalkeeper's top right-hand corner. A stunner!
19' Chase on the case!
A free-kick from deep on the right is floated into the penalty area. Chase ghosts in at the back post, surprising his marker, to guide a header back across goal and in for his first senior VfB goal!
10' VfB lead!
Woltemade attacks down the inside left channel and flicks the ball to his right to Millot. He twists and turns on the edge of the box, outfoxing two defenders before placing the ball in at the far post. A moment of individual magic from the young Frenchman.
18' Kersken denies Muslija from the spot!
Big early save from the Arminia keeper as he denies Freiburg winger Florent Muslija's penalty straight at him and further saving the rebound too. Huge moment for Arminia in the DFB Cup.
"This is a team that presses really high. They play very aggressively and compactly. Last season they were very compact and very flexible in their system. They are very variable. We have to be attentive and bring our strengths onto the pitch."
"There is no more difficult game than in the Allianz Arena. In the cup, in the Bundesliga, in the Champions League: they are always the favorites there. This is like a final for us. We will give it our all."
"For us, it's about not making too many mistakes when in possession and finding the right spaces. Darmstadt is a team that is very variable when in possession and is therefore difficult to deal with - that's why they are one of the teams in the best form in the second division. Our focus must therefore be on protecting ourselves against any possible counter-attacks, and we must also show the same discipline that we have done recently."
"Given the starting position and individual quality, Werder should win the game nine times out of ten. But nine out of ten games does not mean ten out of ten. For me personally, it's a very, very special game against an opponent that is emotionally my home."
"Anything is possible in a cup match. It's 90 minutes, maybe longer. We want to give it our all, do everything we can to keep the game open and demand everything from Stuttgart. Then we'll see what's left for us."
VfB Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß' views pre-Regensburg
"The cup is exciting, always intense and you have the opportunity to reach a final with relatively few wins. If we were to reach the quarter-finals, we would shorten the path there by one step. So of course our objective is clear. In the end, the performance on a single day decides who wins."
"Bielefeld have picked up a lot of points at home in the 3. Liga. The Alm is something special and can be very unpleasant in front of a sold-out crowd. Hannover and Union Berlin have already felt that. We have to start the game at the same energy level as them, but we aim to progress against a third division team."
"I saw an absolutely top team [in Freiburg's 3-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach at the weekend]. They will definitely not underestimate us and will demand something special from all of our squad. None of us has ever played in the round of 16 of the cup - this is something very special for me too."
Four Bundesliga sides (Freiburg, Bremen, Augsburg and Stuttgart) will face sides from the Bundesliga 2 or lower. Will they push through, or will the underdogs manage to surprise them?
Freiburg recorded an impressive victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 12, who were unbeaten in their last five before meeting the Breisgau club. That was Freiburg's first win since Matchday 7 against Augsburg, and puts them in sixth place.

High for Wolfsburg, low for Leipzig
Wolfsburg prepared for their clash with Hoffenheim in perfect fashion with a third straight win their biggest of the season. They downed Leipzig 5-1 for RB's heaviest defeat of the season before facing Frankfurt.
Third tier outfit Arminia Bielefeld are the lowest ranked side left in the competition and the only one from outside the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2. The team who were in the top flight as recently as 2021 are looking to cause an upset against Freiburg and prepared for the match with a 1-0 win over Ingolstadt.
