Full-time: Stuttgart 0-0 Hoffenheim

A competitive top-six contest ends all square in Stuttgart. Hoffenheim worked their socks off and are rewarded with a point that lifts them up to fourth, for a couple of hours at least. VfB, who had a late Undav goal chalked off and created the better chances - not that there were many - stay sixth.

Disallowed goal!

Undav heads in from close range, but the linesman's flag goes up immediately. That won't even go to the VAR - he was offside.

Added time

Three minutes for either side to find a late winner in the south-west derby...

Double change

Forward Adam Hložek makes his third appearance of the season following injury. Full-back Valentin Gendrey's also sent on, having made his comeback from an ankle fracture last weekend. Messrs Lemperle and Prass make way after a pair of industrious shifts.

Blue wave

Hoffenheim are patiently circulating the ball in the Stuttgart half, much to the frustrations of the home fans.

Season first?

Thirteen goals across six Bundesliga games so far this weekend, with five of those still in progress. Will we see one at the MHPArena, where there's yet to be a draw this season?

Wise move

With both his centre-backs cautioned, Ilzer sends on Kabak for Hajdari.

Stuttgart come again

Undav is just eight yards out as he meets a cross from Leweling, but the Germany international can't keep his header on target.

Like-for-like switch

Chances!

Baumann is unsighted as he beats away a well-struck shot from Mittelstädt. The Stuttgart left-back pops up in a wide area as Stuttgart recycle possession, but Karazor heads his probing cross just wide.
68'

Thin ice

Hajdari needs to be careful here. Moments after receiving a yellow card for a foul on Undav, the Kosovo international sends Tomás crashing to the turf - but the referee is unmoved. Tomás is then booked for taking the free-kick too early.
65'

Kramarić milestone

Kramarić replaces Asllani, who's not had much to feed on. Hoffenheim's record scorer is playing in his 301st Bundesliga game, taking him level with ex-Stuttgart midfielder Zvonomir Soldo as the German top tier's record Croatian appearance-maker.
61'

Caution

Hranáč is the first Hoffenheim player to be cautioned after bringing down Nartey.
59'

Saved!

Nübel makes his first real save to smother a snap-shot from Hajdari, following neat build-up between Burger and Asllani.
57'

Chances at a premium

This game needs a spark. Stuttgart's Badredine Bouanani and Hoffenheim's Andrej Kramarić will surely get on at some point - how long before the two coaches shuffle the pack?

Not clicking

It's been a little scrappy since the restart - a lot of energy, but also plenty of misplaced passes.

Karazor joins Stiller in the book after a late challenge on Asllani that all came about following a misplaced pass from Undav.

Half-time: Stuttgart 0-0 Hoffenheim

Goalless at the break in Stuttgart. Hoffenheim are making life very difficult for the DFB Cup holders, though they did concede a very presentable opening late in the half. Other than that, there haven't been any clear-cut chances to speak of.

Point-blank save!

Brilliant from Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann to block at the feet of Tomás, who was unmarked after Nartey flicked a Leweling cross into the six-yard box. That was the best chance of the game.
41'

Strong run

Leweling shows great strength to hold off Hajdari, before sending in a cross that's put behind by the covering Hranáč . Stiller's resultant corner is cleared only as far as Tomás, who sends an ambitious volley over. It appears Jeltsch will try to stick it out until at least half-time, meanwhile...

The Stuttgart defender isn't moving too freely right now. A change is imminent...

Radar off

Lemperle has space inside the Stuttgart area, but his centre is behind its intended target and the hosts can clear.

Into the book

Stiller protests his innocence after a tangle with Avdullahu, earning the game's first booking for his remonstrations.

Stuttgart attack up the middle with Undav, who rolls a pass into the feet of Leweling. The Germany international shifts inside, before firing narrowly wide of the near post from 18 yards, with Baumann at full stretch.

Applying the pressure

Hoffenheim are holding their shape and allowing the Stuttgart players very little room to manoeuvre, whilst attacking as one when the chances arise. Ilzer certainly has his team singing from the same hymn sheet.

Right idea

Vagnoman gets in behind for the first time and sends a teasing ball across the six-yard box, but Leweling's first touch is heavy. When the ball is sent back in, Hoffenheim are able to clear.

Hoffenheim 'the team of the hour'

Speaking to Sky before the game, Hoeneß was full of praise for his former club. "They're the team of the hour. We have to be prepared to invest a lot. It's a good time to do that because we don't play again until next year."

From Hoffenheim to Stuttgart

Hoeneß's first job as a Bundesliga head coach was with Hoffenheim. The former Bayern Munich reserves boss was in charge for 81 competitive games between 2020 and 2022, overseeing 11th- and ninth-placed Bundesliga finishes. The 43-year-old has been at the Stuttgart helm since summer 2023, securing a surprise runners-up finish ahead of Bayern at the end of his debut campaign before lifting the domestic cup last season. His overall record in the VfB dugout record reads: W70, D18, L35.
camera-photo

Unexpected top-four battle

Hoffenheim could go into the winter break in the top four with a win - a remarkable prospect, given they only narrowly avoided last season's relegation play-off. Stuttgart begin the day only a point further back, with designs of their own on UEFA Champions League qualification. VfB finished ninth in the Bundesliga last term, but reached the UEFA Europa League after winning the DFB Cup.

More on those teams

Tiago Tomás comes into the Stuttgart attack for the Africa Cup of Nations-bound Bilal El Khannouss, in the only change to the team that won 4-0 in Bremen. Hoffenheim are without Ivorian winger Bazoumana Touré, who is also at the AFCON and replaced by Alexander Prass. Defender Bernardo returns from suspension in place of Ozan Kabak, while Fisnik Asllani is preferred to veteran forward Andrej Kramarić.

Christian Ilzer on facing Stuttgart

"It will be a fitting way to end before the winter break. The fact that we can say there’s nothing between us and VfB Stuttgart shows how far we've come. That's why we're looking forward to the game."
camera-photo

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Hoffenheim

"This is exactly the kind of game we need right now – a home match to finish the year against a strong team who are above us in the table. Hoffenheim look very steady and confident at the moment. They're always among the top sides in terms of running data, and they play in a very intensive way. We have to leave it all out on the pitch."

African duo to miss out

Both teams will have a player each unavailable for this final game of the year as they compete at the Africa Cup of Nations. Stuttgart's Bilal El Khannouss will be representing hosts Morocco, starting with Sunday's opening match against Comoros, while Hoffenheim's Bazoumana Touré is in the Ivory Coast squad.

Inside knowledge

Current Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß was given the opportunity to establish himself in the Bundesliga at Hoffenheim. In the summer of 2020, he moved from Bayern Munich II to the Sinsheimers, where he led the team for two years. Hoffenheim finished 11th and ninth in Hoeneß's two seasons at the club.
camera-photo

Familiar foe

At the heart of Stuttgart's combination play is former Hoffenheim man Angelo Stiller, who has averaged 92 touches per 90 minutes while boasting an excellent pass completion rate of 90 per cent this season.

Visitors on the rise

Christian Ilzer's Hoffenheim have enjoyed a dramatic turnaround in fortunes this season, winning six of their last eight Bundesliga matches to sit fifth in the standings, one point ahead of Saturday's opponents Stuttgart.

Watch: Hoffenheim 1-1 Stuttgart - previous meeting

The Baden-Württemberg bragging rights were shared home and away last season, which is not all that uncommon in the fixture. Eleven of the 30 Bundesliga meetings between the two regional rivals have ended in draws, with Stuttgart winning 11 and Hoffenheim eight.

Stuttgart returned to winning ways following defeats to Hamburg and Bayern Munich by thrashing 10-man Werder Bremen on Matchday 14. The DFB Cup holders return to action in sixth place and could climb as high as fourth, if results go their way across the calendar year's final weekend of Bundesliga fixtures.
