Full-time: Cologne 1-1 Pauli

Disbelief in Cologne. Nobody here really knows how Cologne didn't claim three points here. After El Mala's opening goal, the visitors failed to pose any threat at any point, yet still struck in stoppage time thanks to Jones' header. Earlier, Ache and Kainz could have sealed the deal, but were denied by Vasilj. For St. Pauli, it's their first point after eight consecutive defeats.

Equaliser at the death!

Incredible! Pauli have levelled it in the game's dying embers. Sinani crosses from in off the flank and Jones wins the aerial duel. The initially harmless ball keeps drifting and finds the net at the far post. It's a bitter one for Cologne as Schwäbe slips and can't reach it.

Vasilj keeps Pauli in the game

First he saves against Ache, then he's also there for the rebound from Kainz. In the middle, Jóhannesson is frustrated. Had he been found with a square pass, the midfielder could have slotted the ball into the empty net.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The result is completely fair up to this point. The visitors have struggled to create anything going forward.

El Mala breaks the deadlock!

The guests' own offensive efforts backfire. From a Pauli corner, El Mala chases down a long ball over the top. The nimble forward runs from the halfway line towards Vasilj and stays ice-cold in front of the keeper to slot it home above the keeper, firing Cologne into a one-goal lead.

The Kiezkickers have had a lot of possession in this opening phase and are moving the ball around in Cologne's half. The hosts are not really getting into the tackles, but neither are Pauli creating dangerous chances in front of goal.

Half-time: Cologne 0-0 Pauli

As both sides head in at the break, it has been the hosts who have had the better chances, but a brilliant save from Vasilj and the post prevented the Billy Goats from taking the lead. They have enjoyed plenty of possession too but haven't always known how to make the most of it in the final third.

Should have been the lead!

It's a triple chance for Cologne! A low cross comes in from the left, finding El Mala at the far post, who strikes the ball back across goal while falling. Vasilj sticks out his hand and makes a brilliant save but the rebound falls to Waldschmidt, who fails to score from close range as his shot deflects off a defender's leg and then the post! Sebulonsen then takes the third attempt, but again Vasilj gets his hands up. What a let off for the visitors...

This time, Cologne clear the corner without any problems.

Huseinbašić plays a lovely ball through to Waldschmidt, but the visitors defend it well and ultimately manage to play their way out of the situation.

Earning his start

After Luca Waldschmidt has consistently made an impact off the bench in recent matches, the 29-year-old gets to start against St. Pauli. It's his first start since mid-October and only the fourth this season.

More on that Pauli side

Alexander Blessin sends the same starting XI into the match as he did in the cup victory during the week away to Mönchengladbach.

More on that Cologne side

Lukas Kwasniok makes four changes to his team from last week. Van den Berg, Huseinbašić, Krauß and Waldschmidt all start in place of the injured Heintz, as well as Özkacar, Castro-Montes and Jóhannesson, who drop to the bench.

Alexander Blessin on facing Cologne

"They’ve started the season very well. You can see from the stats that they’ve accepted the Bundesliga challenge. They play with intensity, run themselves into the ground and fight for each other to the end. They never give up. It’s really very good. We have to take our energy and intensity into the game. That’s been excellent in the last two games. We have to squeeze every last drop out of ourselves one more time.”

Lukas Kwasniok on facing St. Pauli

"In terms of how they play, I see St. Pauli among the top six to eight teams in the Bundesliga. I was there to watch their cup game at Gladbach. It was a joy to watch them. Even after nine straight losses, they're still brave. They also have a core of experienced players. We'd be best served going into this game as the underdogs again."
