Full-time: Mainz 0-0 Augsburg

Both sides have to be content with a point each after a battling encounter. There were a couple of chances to win it at both ends, but a goalless draw is ultimately a fair result after some solid defending all round.

Augsburg threaten on the break

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The xG suggests the hosts should be in front by now.

Mainz looking to break through

The hosts continue to dominate - will we see them up the pressure as the second half progresses? We did see a strange moment at the other end when Sano looped a long back pass over Zentner's head, but the Mainz goalkeeper could track back and claim it.

Bo Henriksen on facing Augsburg

“The three points are the most important thing for us. Augsburg are a strong side who have performed well in recent weeks. I watched their cup game in midweek and I thought they played well yet again. They don’t create a bundle of chances but are efficient when they do get in front of goal and also defend very well. Our focus needs to be on bringing our own game, though, and approaching the contest full of energy.”
camera-photo

Jess Thorup on facing Mainz

“We should have won our first meeting of the season with Mainz. We were lacking in a few departments that day and need to make amends this weekend by getting the win.”

Mainz every right to be confident

Since Augsburg's promotion in 2011, the 05-ers have won more Bundesliga matches at home against Augsburg than any other club (9).

Mainz's transfer business

The 05-ers quietly went about their business over the winter transfer market with some smart signings. USMNT midfielder Lennard Maloney was signed from Heidenheim and French winger Arnaud Nordin was brought in from Montpellier. There were a couple of outgoings, most prominently Gabriel Vidović's was recalled from his loan by parent club Bayern.
camera-photo

Augsburg transfers

The Bavarians made a couple of moves in the transfer market over the winter window. Mërgim Berisha was brought in on loan from Hoffenheim and Cédric Zesiger was likewise signed on loan from Wolfsburg. The most notable departure was Rubén Vargas, who made the switch to Sevilla on a permanent basis.

Records on the line

Mainz have been strong at home recently and are unbeaten in their last 6 Bundesliga home games, winning the last 5 in a row. Mainz have never won 6 consecutive Bundesliga home games. Meanwhile another win to add to Augsburg's 12 wins against Mainz in the past could tie a club record, having only beaten Werder Bremen more often (13 times).
