Darmstadt pick up vital win

With Augsburg and Darmstadt occupying in 14th and 15th, respectively, going into Matchday 7, their meeting already felt like the trappings of an early relegation six-pointer. The game burst into life via Tim Skarke’s excellent volley seven minutes after the turnaround. Tobias Kempe then converted a penalty with 20 minutes to play and despite Ermedin Demirović’s late effort setting up a nervy finish, Darmstadt were able to wrap up an important-looking three points.

Watch: Darmstadt 1-2 Augsburg - previous meeting

The last meeting came in 2017, with Augsburg snatching the three points.

Head-to-head

This will be the fifth time the two sides have met in the Bundesliga and, either way you look at, Augsburg have dominated the most recent history. In the top flight, Die Függerstadter have lost just once against Die Lillien, with Darmstadt's previous triumph coming in the 1982/1983 Bundesliga 2 season. They will look to use the 2015 victory, when they prevailed 2-0 thanks to goals from Sandro Wagner and Peter Niemeyer.

Two different Augsburgs

The hosts, meanwhile, sit 14th after their first six matches. Their Jekyll and Hyde away form means teams have often met two different Augsburgs this season - while they have amassed five points from three games at the WWK Arena, they have beaten in all three encounters on the road, the latest matches in a run of 16 away ties without a win. Fortunately for them, they face Darmstadt on home turf.

Darmstadt finally up and running

Lieberknecht and co can now breathe a little easier after winning to move themselves out of the relegation zone. A victory really should have come sooner - they led Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 during Matchday 4 before drawing 3-3 - but this result will help them settle down amongst the elite.

Watch: Freiburg 2-0 Augsburg

Augsburg, meanwhile, were defeated away at Freiburg. Vincenzo Grifo netted from the penalty spot after just five minutes, leaving the visitors with an uphill battle, and Philipp Lienhart's header towards the start of the second half put the game to bed.

Watch: Darmstadt 4-2 Bremen

Die Lilien secured their first win of the campaign during Matchday 6. They soared into a 4-0 lead and, although Bremen scored two late goals to put their opponents under pressure, Torten Lieberknecht's men held on to triumph.
