Full time: Darmstadt 1-2 Bochum

Takuma Asano scored twice to give Bochum their first win of the Bundesliga season. The Japan international struck in both halves, his winning goal coming after Fabian Nürnberger had brought Darmstadt level and Christopher Klarer a goal ruled out for offside. Despite having Fabian Holland sent off, the Lilies went close to equalising when Nürnberger curled a free-kick against the woodwork. The result lifts Bochum above Darmstadt, who could yet end the weekend in the bottom three.

Woodwork!

Nürnberger catches out Riemann with a free-kick from the right-hand side that cannons off the Bochum goalkeeper's left-hand post!
81'

Chance!

It's three-on-two in Bochum's favour, with Bernardo leading the charge. He sprays a pass out to Paciencia, who forces Schuhen into a diving save from the edge of the area. Bernardo can't make use of the rebound. Darmstadt are still in this!

Positive changes

Stojilkovic is on for the 10 men of Darmstadt, who desperately need a goal. Oermann and Paciencia have also joined the action for Bochum.

Darmstadt down to 10!

Not again! They had two men sent off against Bayern, and now Holland's been shown his marching orders for a clear tactical foul on Kwarteng. The Bochum sub was just too quick for the Darmstadt captain.
68'

Chance!

Decent break for Darmstadt. Mehlem shifts it to his left for Nürnberger, who drives a low shot at Riemann from inside the box.

Fresh legs

Vilhelmsson, who scored in the defeat to Leverkusen earlier this season, is on for Kempe.

Double booking

Klarer isn't happy with Gamboa's initial challenge, and joins the Bochum defender in the book for his reaction.

Tactical change

Loosli's come on at left-back, with Osterhage moving inside and Bernardo into a more advanced role.

Big save!

Skarke shakes off the attentions of Gamboa, but Riemann is out quickly to block the incoming shot with his legs. Pfeiffer then takes aim from outside the box, sending a fierce effort just past the left-hand post.

Bochum change

Kwarteng's on to give the Darmstadt defence something else to think about. He scored 10 times for Magdeburg in Bundesliga 2 last season.

Asano at the double!

Bochum restore their lead in Darmstadt! Schuhen's rushed clearance is picked off in midfield; Hofmann holds off his man to touch a pass into Asano, who sends a fabulous swerving strike into the far bottom corner from 18 yards.

Half-time: Darmstadt 1-1 Bochum

Klarer powers in a Mehlem free-kick, but he was a fraction offside and it's ruled out. So we're all square at the end of an entertaining first 45.

Darmstadt equaliser!

The home side haul themselves level late in the half. Pfeiffer does really well under pressure to knock a controlled header from Mehlem's cross into the path of Nürnberger. It's not an easy chance, but he shows superb precision to guide his header into the corner. Game on!

Bochum lead!

Well, well. The visitors forge ahead, with a bit of good fortune playing it's part. Stöger's attempt at a disguised pass is inadvertently touched towards the six-yard box by Bader. Müller and Schuhen try to clear up, but Asano darts in to tuck the loose ball away.

Lieberknecht's view on Bochum

"I think it's going to be a very physical game, because Bochum bring a lot of physicality to the pitch and have a lot of tall players. That's also what makes things a bit more 'difficult' for us, because in Matej [Maglica] und Klaus [Gjasula], two components are missing. That's why we'll have to see how we set things up at the back, how we resolve the problem. And yes, intensity, which you hear about so often, will definitely play a role on Friday night. It might not necessarily be a feast for the eyes, but it'll certainly be a game where there will be a lot of battling for the ball. And I think I've prepared the boys well for that. We're up for it, we're looking forward to it and we're ready."

Letsch's view on Darmstadt

"I rather expect them to attack very high at home, to go for it up front. They know what they're capable of at home with the way they play football, and that's how I expect them to be. But it's not guaranteed. It's also possible they've given it some thought and will want to play a bit deeper, as they did against Bremen at home. From that point of view, it's fascinating. We've discussed both, we've prepared for both and we'll approach the matter accordingly. We've focused a bit more on ourselves this week anyway."

Leaky defence

Darmstadt have already conceded almost as many goals (30) as they let in during the entire 2022/23 campaign (33), in which they earned promotion from Bundesliga 2.

Unwanted record

Bochum have yet to win this season, making it the first time in their history that they have gone the first nine games of a top-flight campaign without victory. Nevertheless, they still have more points on the board (five) than they did at the same stage last season (four).

History on Darmstadt's side

This will be just the fifth top-flight meeting between these teams, and the first in more than 40 years! Those first four games all took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with Darmstadt winning three and Bochum just one.
