Full-time: Karlsruhe 3-1 Magdeburg
Statistically, Magdeburg were the better team throughout the entire match, especially dominating the first half and deservedly scoring through Atik. Shortly before the break, however, Karlsruhe improved and equalised on the brink of half-time. In the dressing room, Christian Eichner clearly found the right words as the home team scored twice. Towards the end, things slowed down, with Atik's second yellow card epitomising Magdeburg's afternoon - this was just their second away defeat of the term.

Second yellow!
It gets worse and worse for Magdeburg. Atik holds off Jung, but then takes a step backwards towards the Karlsruhe player, causing his elbow to land in Jung's face - Jablonski shows him a second yellow as a result.

Another yellow card
Substitute Teixeira hacks at the foot of fellow substitute Pinto Pedrosa and then complains. Jablonski brandishes a yellow.

An effort
Encouraged by Mo El Hankouri, Mathisen sets up the free-kick and then sends it one to two metres over Weiß's goal, who recognises this early and pulls his hands back.

Wanitzek, Wanitzek, Wanitzek
He set up the first two goals and scored the third himself! Wanitzek has now been involved in 20 of Karlsruhe's 43 goals this season.

Second Yellow
After a challenge, Kobald and Atik scuffle, then more players from both teams join. Only Atik receives a yellow card, as he initiated the incident with his push.

Karlsruhe increase their lead!
Following a throw-in from the visitors, the ball lands directly at Wanitzek's feet. He plays a simple one-two with Kaufmann before finishing low and hard into the far corner.
66'
Magdeburg pushing forward
Magdeburg are not happy with Karlsruhe's lead, and in the last few minutes, they are trying to revert to their initial style of play with long spells of possession and controlled forward play. However, Karlsruhe are currently standing firm.

Double chance for Kaars!
The striker meets a cross from the left and, while Weiß initially saves, the ball rebounds straight back to Kaars. Surprised by this, he can't direct the ball on target, and Weiß makes a second save.
52'
Another season first
Like Rapp, Kobald also scores his first goal of 2024/25 - his last strike was in January 2024.
50'
Just like in the reverse fixture
Back then, Magdeburg also led 1-0, before Karlsruhe came from behind to lead 2-1. In the end, Magdeburg managed to equalise.
48'
Game turned around!
Karlsruhe didn't let go of the ball after the kick-off. Kobald plays it to Kaufmann, who sends a high cross from the right byline into the centre, where Wanitzek is already waiting and, like Rapp before him, wants to head it into the net - but the ball takes a few detours. First Reimann gets a touch, then it hits the crossbar, and in the end it's Kobald who - of course also with his head - nods the ball over the line.
46'
Twice as good after the break
Away from home, Magdeburg have scored 11 goals before half-time, but 22 after the interval.

Half-time in Karlsruhe
That was also the final note of an attractive first half, in which Magdeburg was clearly setting the tone and deservedly took the lead. After about half an hour, KSC got better into the match, worked out several set-pieces - and the one in the 45+3 minute finally led to the jubilant equaliser.

Third time's a charm for Karlsruhe. Wanitzek's third corner flies relatively low towards the near post, where Rapp easily taps the ball over the line.

Brief interruption
Müller and Schleusener clash heads in an aerial duel in Magdeburg's half and both receive brief treatment. The match has now resumed, though, and both players are able to continue.

Kaars one-on-one with Weiß!
Once again, a Karlsruhe set-piece backfires and Magdeburg counter. Kaars receives the ball and tries to place it past Weiß on the left, but the keeper stretches out his right leg and deflects the ball wide.
36'
Tactical foul
After a Karsruhe corner, Magdeburg get the ball and look to quickly find Kaars. Heußer resorts to a tactical foul as a precaution and pulls the striker down by his shirt, accepting the consequence of a yellow card.

Magdeburg take the lead!
As usual, the away side build an attack down Nollenberg's left side. The winger spots the unmarked Atik at the edge of the penalty area, and the forward takes a touch to set himself up before threading the ball between two Karlsruhe defenders and into the far corner.

Last season in the 7-0 home victory against Magdeburg, Karlsruhe were already 3-0 up by this point.
25'
Close call!
After a one-two with El Hankouri, El-Zein shoots, but Franke just manages to get his leg in the way and deflects it for a corner. The shot would have been heading for the top corner too. Afterwards, Weiß receives brief treatment, but the KSC goalkeeper is able to continue.

So far, Karlsuhe need over 40 seconds to regain possession after losing the ball. Magdeburg, meanwhile, need just 16 seconds.

Atik!
The impressive Nollenberger holds off several Karlsruhe players before laying it off to Atik. His low shot skims just wide of the left post - once again, not a shot on target.
20'
Twenty minutes gone
So far, we haven't see a shot on goal, but Magdeburg are clearly the more proactive team going forward. Karlsruhe, in contrast, are mostly just reacting, but are doing so well.
17'
Weiß saves!
Once again, Nollenberger finds space down the left. This time, he tries a sharp, low cross which Weiß parries. His teammates are there to clear the danger.
15'
Danger from a free-kick?

Good omen for Magdeburg?
El-Zein is starting for the visitors for the first time since November. Magdeburg have never lost when he's started (two wins, four draws).
A look at the benches
For Karlsruhe, winter signing Meiko Wäschenbach (who came from Cologne) is included in the squad for the first time. For Magdeburg, Lubambo Musonda is back in the squad for the first time in more than four months due to injury, and winter signing Dariusz Stalmach (Poland youth international, who came from AC Milan's youth setup) could make his debut.
Günther gets a chance to shine
The Karlsruhe defender last started at the end of October, was injured in the meantime and recently had his first appearances off the bench.
Müller starts
Because Heber is missing for the visitors and potential replacement Pfeiffer is also not available, Tobias Müller is starting for the first time since November.
Many absences for Magdeburg
Heber and Ahl-Holmström are unavailable today following last week's first home win of the season. Additionally, super-sub Loric (goal and assist against Cologne), as well as Hercher and Pfeiffer, are also out.
Four changes for Karlsruhe
Burnić is serving his second suspension for yellow cards this season - the first player in the league to do so - and is replaced by Heußer. Also new to the team are Jung, Beifus and Günther, coming in for Jensen, Pinto Pedrosa (both on the bench) and Herold (absent).
Magdeburg starting XI
Reimann - Hugonet, Mathisen, Müller - Gnaka - Mo El Hankouri, Kaars, Nollenberger - El-Zein, Burcu, Atik
Karlsruhe starting XI
Weiß - Jung, Kobald, Beifus, Günther - Heußer, Franke - Rapp, Wanitzek - Schleusener, Kaufmann
Referees wear black armbands
The elite referees of the German Football Association are mourning the loss of former head referee Volker Roth and will wear black armbands this weekend. Roth passed away on Monday at the age of 83.
Christian Eichner on facing Magdeburg
"Magdeburg are a team that play dominant football under Christian Titz. They represent one of the most uncomfortable situations without the ball in Bundesliga 2."
Christian Titz on facing Karlsruhe
"Karlsruhe are a team that, although they haven't picked up many points recently, have a clear playing structure. They have a lot of quality in their ranks. We know what to expect there."
Special encounter nearly 25 years ago
In addition to five second division and two third division encounters, there was a memorable match in the DFB Sup round of 16 in November 2000 when third-tier KSC lost despite leading three times against fourth-tier FCM. Magdeburg equalised to make it 3-3 in the 90th minute and went on to win 5-3 in extra time. One round earlier, the team from Börde had sensationally knocked out Bayern.
The wait for a wictory
The last Magdeburg victory against Karlsruhe was a 3-2 away win in July 2022, when Magdeburg led 3-0 after just 34 minutes. Since then, in four meetings, there has been the aforementioned 7-0 and three draws, including a 2-2 in this season's reverse, where former Karlsruhe player Xavier Amaechi was on the scoresheet.
KSC have lost many key players
In that 7-0 victory, Budu Zivzivadze (two), Igor Matanović and Paul Nebel were all on the scoresheet but they also all now play in the Bundesliga.
FCM's record against KSC
Magdeburg have lost only one of their last six competitive matches against KSC, but it was a heavy defeat. On 17 March 2024, the Börde city side suffered their biggest-ever loss in Bundesliga 2, courtesy of a 7-0 thrashing at the Wildpark.
