What. A. Finish. An amazing end to this game sees 10-man Werder take a deserved point from a distraught Leverkusen, who had led here 2-0 and 3-1. A debut goal from Isaac Schmidt and one more at the death from Karim Coulibaly on his first Bremen start hauled the hosts back in dramatic fashion.

Scenes at the Weser Stadium. The fans in Green and White are going berserk as Coulibaly wheels away in celebration! The 10 men have come back from 3-1 down to surely earn a point. Werder peppered the Leverkusen goal with crosses and with goalkeeper Mio Backhaus even up in the Bayer 04 area, the ball bounced back off the crossbar straight to Karim Coulibaly, who volleyed home from close range!

Saturday's hosts will have a new player in their ranks after completing the loan signing of Yukinari Sugawara from Southampton for this season. The 25-year-old Japan international is a right-back.

The average age of Werder's team on Matchday 1 was 24.4 years, making them around three years younger than last season.

Leverkusen have gone exactly two seasons without losing away from home in the Bundesliga, stretching back to a defeat in Bochum in May 2023. Their run of 34 games is the longest by any team in German top-flight history. They drew 2-2 in Bremen last season.

Not a home banker

The last time Werder won their first home game of the league season was back in 2013/14. However, they have kept clean sheets in their last four games at the Weserstadion and could now equal the club record of five consecutive home shutouts from 1992/93.

False starts

Horst Steffen and Erik ten Hag both lost their first Bundesliga match in charge of their respective club (and first ever as a coach in the league). They are the two oldest current Bundesliga coaches at 56 and 55 respectively. The last Leverkusen boss to lose his first two Bundesliga games at the helm was Dettmar Cramer in 1982.

One of those draws came in Bremen last season (2-2), but Werder won 2-0 in Leverkusen, meaning they took four points off the then defending champions - no other team had a better record against Bayer in 2024/25's Bundesliga.
