Watch: Mainz’s drama-filled journey to the Bundesliga

After three agonising near misses, Mainz finally earned Bundesliga promotion under Jürgen Klopp in 2004.

Union boosted

Despite a number of departures, Union have been busy adding new talent to their squad. Highly rated Dortmund academy graduate Tom Rothe has landed after helping Holstein Kiel to promotion, while László Bénes, Leopold Querfeld and Ivan Prtajin should provide Svensson with plenty of options.

Ins and outs at Mainz

Mainz have had a tricky summer, losing two star performers from last season in Brajan Gruda and Leandro Barreiro. Kaishu Sano has arrived from Japanese outfit Kashima Antlers, while Bayern Munich loanee Armindo Sieb will be one to watch.

Opening wins

Both Mainz and Union won their opening competitive matches of the season in the DFB Cup, but neither did so entirely convincingly. Union beat Regionalliga side Greifswald by just a single goal, while Mainz needed extra time to overcome third tier Wehen Wiesbaden.

Pre-season outlook

Both sides had largely positive pre-season campaigns, with Mainz winning all but one of their matches, including a 3-1 victory over Ligue 1 outfit Montpellier. Union, meanwhile tasted defeat against Lyon, but racked up draws against tough opponents in Real Sociedad and Rangers, while also beating Dynamo Kyiv.

Despite a season opening 4-1 Union win in the pairs first meeting, their second and most recent was far closer. Jonathan Burkardt and Robin Gosens both scored in a chaotic first-half injury time period.

Battle of the Bo's

Henriksen's opposite number on Matchday 1 is none other then ex-Mainz boss Bo Svensson, hired by Union at the end of May. This will be Svensson's 98th Bundesliga game as a coach. His first 97 were spent on the Mainz bench.

Bo Henriksen guided the 05ers to safety with a superb run of nine unbeaten games at the end of a dramatic 2023/24 campaign. The Dane will be keen to see his side keep that sequence going into a new season.

Union's strong start

The Berliners will look to repeat their feat of a 4-1 victory against Mainz on the opening day of last season, when Kevin Behrens (now at Wolfsburg) scored a hat-trick for the Irons in the German capital.
