Full-time: Stuttgart 2-0 St. Pauli

The hosts pick up a deserved three points after a goal in each half from Ermedin Demirović and Bilal El Khannouss. VfB could even afford to miss a penalty while for Pauli, a first Bundesliga reverse of the season will provide food for thought for coach Alexander Blessin.

Heading for victory?

Should they hold on for a win here, this will be Stuttgart's second home victory of the season and will lift morale after defeats against Bayern in the Supercup and away to Union Berlin and Freiburg.

This is a solid stop from Nübel, who spreads himself to prevent the onrushing Afolayan from scoring with a shot to the corner.
camera-photo

Effective skipper

It's been quite an evening for Ermedin Demirović, who was chosen to captain Stuttgart for the first time here. A goal and two disallowed goals so far mean the striker will almost certainly be among the Man of the Match contenders.

Ball in the net

Stiller's flighted free kick into the area causes Pauli all sorts of problems. Demirović throws up a leg, makes contact and wafts the ball into the back of the net. The referee whistles for offside.

It should be 3-0

Demirović races clean through the middle and only has Vasilj to beat. Pauli's shot stopper gets something on the subsequent shot to send the ball looping over the bar.

It's Pauli time

This is the Boys in Brown's best moment of the game. Mathias Pereira Lage sends a bending shot with his right towards the far post. Nübel dives across and palms the ball away from danger.

Pauli hit the bar!

The visitors almost strike back immediately. Louis Oppie arrives at the back stick and connects to send the ball rising back across Alexander Nübel and against the crossbar.

VfB have daylight

This is one more very tidy goal from Stuttgart. Pauli give up possession and Leweling springs forward before sending the ball low into the area. Stiller takes one touch to lay it off to Bilal El Khannouss, who passes the ball into the corner for his first Bundesliga goal. Super stuff from Stuttgart.

Half-time: Stuttgart 1-0 St. Pauli

The hosts take a deserved lead into the break. New VfB captain Ermedin Demirović was denied an early opener when his header was ruled out for offside and when Angelo Stiller then had a penalty saved, the home faithful began to fret. They needn't have worried, with Demirović's super finish before the break bringing the Swabians their just rewards.

Special from Demirović

This is a lovely goal from Ermedin Demirović. Leweling plays the striker through on the edge of the D but VfB's captain has work to do. He leaves a few defenders in his wake before prodding a finish high into the net. Stuttgart lead.

Incredible! Nikola Vasilj watches as Leweling plays Stiller through. The VfB midfielder only has the Pauli keeper to beat, but Vasilj wins the battle, beating the ball away from danger.

Stiller's penalty saved

It's not the best of spot kicks from Angelo Stiller, who goes for a side-footed placement to the corner. He hasn't connected at all well with that and Nikola Vasilj makes yet another penalty save to add to his Bundesliga collection.

Demirović denied

The MHPArena erupted in joy when Stuttgart's captain got beyond the defence to head a set-piece into the box high into the net. The celebrations were short lived, however, with Demirović a fraction offside.

Early talking to

Adam Dźwigała goes right through the back of Tiago Tomás, who lands in pain. Further in to this game, that might have led to a booking for the Pauli man, but with just two minutes gone, the Polish defender gets a proper talking to from the ref.

One change for Pauli

Clearly not a follower of the 'never change a winning team' mantra, Pauli head coach Alexander Blessin has switched things up in midfield for this one after last week's 2-1 win over Augsburg, with Saliakas (pictured) coming in for Pyrka.

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing St. Pauli

“St. Pauli have started very well. They’re a team with a very clear idea and playing against them is a big challenge. They have an established structure, they’re a strong team. Our task is to put a stop to their good run. We want to cause St. Pauli big problems.”

Alexander Blessin on facing Stuttgart

"They try to create numerical superiority in the half and outside positions. This results in asymmetry in their movements. You always have to watch out for Angelo Stiller, who acts a bit like a quarterback. He plays short balls and long balls; he varies the game and makes it fast. With Jamie Leweling and Chris Führich, they have a lot of speed combined with a lot of quality on the ball, and Tiago Tomás is also coming back. Even though they didn't have the best start, they have an incredible amount of quality. We want to use our quality to prevent theirs from coming to the fore."

Irvine to miss out again

After returning to the bench for the win against Augsburg, captain Irvine is set to miss out once more against Stuttgart after suffering a muscle injury.

The Swabians host stern St. Pauli

With just one win from their opening three games, the hosts have been out of sorts so far in 2025/26. Pauli, meanwhile, have made their best start to a Bundesliga season in the club's history, winning twice and drawing once in their first three games.
