The Leverkusen striker told the Bundesliga: “We’re not in the position we wanted to be in going into our final game, but it’s our last match in front of our fans so we want to give them a good performance. We want to get the win and hope Stuttgart and Hoffenheim lose their games, but it’s not in our hands anymore. We just want to put in a good performance and see what happens.”

Hamburg's steely defence

No team scored more Bundesliga 2 goals than HSV (78) last season, but they've transformed their playing style under Merlin Polzin in 2025/26. Shifting to a back-three system and with a greater focus on defending and counter-attacks, their 53 goals conceded in the Bundesliga this term is the seventh-fewest in Germany's top flight, while their 11 strikes on the counter-attack is tied most alongside Bayern Munich.

Slipping away

Leverkusen last finished sixth in 2022/23 under Xabi Alonso, prior to their double-winning campaign, and their hopes of playing in the Champions League next season were dashed following their defeat to direct rivals Stuttgart last weekend. It means that Kasper Hjulmand's side must beat Hamburg on Matchday 34, and hope that both Stuttgart and Hoffenheim lose against Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Mönchengladbach respectively to secure fourth place.

Kings in the north

Hamburg (11th) will finish 2025/26 as the best northern team ahead of Werder Bremen (15th), who secured their top flight status on Matchday 33, Wolfsburg (16th) and St. Pauli (18th). The last time this happened was 13 years ago in 2013.
