Full-time: Mainz 3-1 Wolfsburg

An excellent second-half display, inspired by the ever-impressive Amiri, saw Mainz power past Wolfsburg on home soil. The hosts responded well to Amoura's early goal, with Tietz grabbing an equaliser before Bell handed Mainz a deserved lead with 20 minutes to go. Amiri then wrapped up the three points from the penalty spot to lift Fischer's side up to 16th in the Bundesliga table.

The ball falls to the midfielder inside the Mainz box, but his bicycle kick at goal is well held by Batz. Mainz are almost there.

Seven minutes added on

Mainz don't have too long to hold on for the win here. The hosts take off Hollerbach and Tietz, who responded very well today to their early missed chances. Maloney and Silas are on in their place.

Amiri scores from the spot!

The midfielder does what Tietz couldn't in the first-half. Grabara guesses the right way again, but the power generated by Amiri takes it past him, and into the corner of the net. What a difference the German international has made today since coming on.

Mainz could have another spot kick here. The referee is going to check the VAR monitor after a potential handball from a corner.

Double substitution for Wolfsburg

Majer and Lindström are on for the away side. Souza, who was walking a tight-role on a yellow yard, makes way, alongside Wimmer.

Mainz complete the turnaround!

Amiri has turned this game on its head here! His corner-kick is once again right on the money; Hollberach then heads the ball down for Bell, who prods it home from close range. After a quick VAR check, the goal is given.

Souza booked

The midfielder is given a yellow card for a very late challenge on goalscorer Tietz. It's not been his day today, having also given away a penalty earlier in the game.
68'

Tietz gets the equaliser!

It's taken them over an hour, but Mainz finally get the goal they deserve. Amiri makes an instant impact, whipping in a lovely corner, and it's Tietz who rises high to head the ball into the Wolfsburg net. Grabara couldn't stop that one. Game on!

The goalscorer goes off

Amoura's work is done for the day, having handed his side a very early lead. Speedster Daghim is on to try and spring a counter whenever he can.
65'

Double chancg for the hosts

Here comes the cavalry. Amiri, the hero a few weeks ago against Heidenheim, replaces Nebel for the final half-hour, while the returning Mwene is on for Da Costa.
61'

Wimmer booked

It's a typical forward's challenge from the Austrian, who clumsily knocked Kohr to the ground. A yellow card is given for the tactical foul.
59'

Mainz continue to dominate possession

They've had most of the ball so far in this half, but fortune continues to evade the Bundesliga's bottom side. An awkward, bouncing free-kick from Nebel is saved again by Grabara and eventually cleared to safety by Wimmer.
53'

Shot happy Mainz

The home side's 12 shots at goal are the most they've managed in the first-half of a Bundesliga match this season.
50'

Eriksen's shot flashes over the bar

The first shot of the second half goes to Bauer' side. Eriksen shoots from the right of the penalty area, but skies his effort.
49'

Nebel in some pain

It's a sore one for the Mainz midfielder, whose foot is accidentally trodden on by Souza. He looks fine to carry on.
47'

Dangerous ball by Kohr

The defender whips in an inviting cross, but no Mainz player is at the back post the capitalise. It's a good start to the second half for the home side, though.

The second half is underway!

Wolfsburg get us going again at Mewa Arena. Neither side has made any changes at the break.

Watch: Tietz misses a chance to equalise from the spot

camera-photo

Half-time: Mainz 0-1 Wolfsburg

Die Wölfe lead at the break after Amoura's superb flicked finish in the third minute. Mainz have done everything but score since then, with Tietz missing a penalty, and Hollerbach having a shot cleared off the line. The home side are firmly in this one, but will have to try and find a way past the excellent Grabara in the second half if they are to take anything from this game.

Hollerbach shot cleared off the line!

How have the hosts not scored today? It's another big chance for Hollerbach, but Vavro just about clears his shot off the line. Wolfsburg somehow go into the break ahead.

Hollerbach heads over

Widmer sends in a nice ball to the back post, but Hollerbach can't keep his header down. In the 24-year-old's defence, the cross was a tad too high for him.
37'

Mainz continue to threaten

Tietz and Hollerbach may have lacked composure in front of goal, but the pair have linked up very nicely so far. Tietz has another effort, this time flicking on Kohr's free-kick at the near post. Once more, however, Grabara is equal to it.
35'

Eriksen's free-kick is deflected to safety

The former Tottenham man takes the free-kick from the edge of the Mainz box, but it hits the wall and dribbles away from goal.
33'

Posch goes into the referee's book

New signing Posch brings down Wimmer just outside the Mainz box, and is booked for it. Wolfsburg have a free-kick in a really dangerous position here.
31'

Big stop again from Grabara!

Hollerbach has the chance this time. The ball is flicked on by Sano inside the Wolfsburg box, but the forward fires straight at Grabara from close range. Mainz have missed three big chances to equalise already.

Tietz misses!

It's a wonderful reach by Grabara! Tietz tried to pick out the corner of the net, but the Wolfsburg stopper got a big right hand to it and turned it around the post for a corner. How big could that be for Mainz?

Penalty to Mainz!

Lee is bundled over in the box by Souza, who is in today for the suspended Arnold. The referee immediately points to the spot. It doesn't look like it's going to be overturned by VAR here. Penalty upheld. Tietz will take it...
17'

Da Costa is back to his feat

The wing-back looks okay again after getting some treatment. Fischer won't want to lose another key man to injury.
14'

Hollerbach lively

He's back into the starting XI today, and is already looking dangerous. A direct run wins his side a much-needed corner. Meanwhile, Da Costa is down on the ground and looks like he may not be able to continue.
12'

Slow starters

Mainz have conceded seven goals in the first 15 minutes this season - more than any other Bundesliga side.
9'

Wolfsburg regain control

The away side are dominating the ball here and look much more comfortable in the opening exchanges. Amoura has another shot, this time from range, which sails over the bar.
6'

Huge chance for Tietz!

Wow, it should already be 1-1 here. The Mainz striker is through 1v1 against Grabara after a poor back-pass, but the keeper rushes out quickly to save it. Wolfsburg got away with one there.

Early lead for Wolfsburg!

It's excellent work from Kumbedi, who drives to the byline, and Amoura is there in the middle of the six-yard box to beautifully flick his cross into the net. What a start for the visitors!

Never again

On 27 January 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated. Since 2004, football matches in Germany around 27 January have become a symbol of remembrance for all the lives persecuted under National Socialism. Mainz and Wolfsburg stand united today with the message, "Never Again".

More on that Wolfsburg team

Souza replaces captain Arnold in midfield, who is suspended for today's game. Elsewhere, Koulierakis is absent from the matchday squad, so Vanro has been drafted in at centre-back, while Kumbedi gets the nod over Burger.
camera-photo

More on that Mainz team

Despite being doubtful to play, Hollerbach returns to Fischer's XI after missing Mainz's last two games. Amiri is only fit enough for the bench, while Posch replaces Potulski at the back - who started last time out against Cologne.

Table talk

Hosts Mainz go into this afternoon's game at the bottom of the Bundesliga table. However, a win, depending on how Heidenheim get on against RB Lepizig, could see them climb up to 16th. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, currently sit in 12th place, seven points ahead of Mainz.
camera-photo

Urs Fischer on facing Wolfsburg

"This are a quality team. You can also see the coach's influence. I think they place a lot of importance on possession. You see attacking moves throughout the 90 minutes. They can also switch play with quick players like Wimmer and Amoura. You have to be ready for that and not give them the space to do it. They constantly try to put you under pressure, especially in the half-spaces, make deep runs and sometimes play a long ball behind the defence. So they are flexible and creative."

Early Wolfsburg team news

Daniel Bauer has a long list of absentees to contend with. Maximilian Arnold, Bence Dárdai, Joakim Mæhle, Rogério and Jonas Wind are all unavailable. The good news, Mattias Svanberg can feature once more after recovering from illness, as can Marius Müller, the Wolves' back-up goalkeeper. Jenson Seelt, though, is still a doubt.

Daniel Bauer on Mainz

"They’re a team whose strengths right now are very clearly in play without the ball, and then they become dangerous in the transitions. At the same time, they will rarely give us the chance to really press them, because - like Heidenheim - they also tend to play long balls, trying to get quickly behind our first two pressing lines. They then have two powerful strikers up front, and also guys with pace; they’re strong in second-ball duels."

Wolfsburg complete Shiogai signing

The Wolves have completed the signing of Kento Shiogai from NEC Nijmegen. The striker scored seven goals in 12 Eredivisie games for his former club this season, as well as two in two in the Dutch Cup.

Mixed under Bauer

Now eight games into his reign, Wolfsburg head coach Daniel Bauer is still looking for consistency. His side have picked up wins against Union Berlin, Borussia Mönchengladbach and St. Pauli to move clear of the relegation zone, but the 8-1 loss to Bayern Munich, as well as the failure to win games against Freiburg and Heidenheim despite being in front, have been disappointing.

Improvement under Fischer

Mainz's 2-1 loss against Cologne last weekend, which came after they took the lead, was their first in seven matches under new head coach Urs Fischer. They have managed to move off the foot of the Bundesliga table as a result, although they remain in the relegation zone.
