The Gladbach celebrations

camera-photo

Full-time: Mainz 0-1 Gladbach

It was a tight game, but in the end, Gladbach have come out on top thanks to that unfortunate own goal from Da Costa. The hosts were much improved in the second half and had a couple of good chances through Weiper, but Gladbach probably just about earned the win in the end as Batz was called into action on numerous occasions.

Dangerous

Sano does superbly to keep a loose ball in play and find Lee in the centre. He spins and shoots, but Diks does superbly to get his head in the way. Gladbach eventually scramble the ball clear.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
The hosts created zero xG in the first half, but they have been much better in the second and have probably deserved a goal.

Machino forces another good save

Tabaković gets on the end of a flick on and feeds Machino in the centre. He shoots, but Batz is there once more to get down and make a good save.

That should be the equaliser!

Lee does superbly to take down a long pass and cross to Weiper. The striker has lost his man in the middle and has a huge chance to nod home from the six-yard box, but he gets it all wrong and misses the target.

Weiper heads wide

Amiri sends in a good cross from the right that is flicked on by Weiper, but he misses the target.

Good effort

Gladbach lead!

A Gladbach corner is met by Tabaković, but his header is way off target. Unfortunately for Mainz, the striker's header then deflects off the rear of Da Costa and loops into the far corner. It's a comical own goal.

Incredible save!

Netz causes the Mainz defence problems with a direct run before Gladbach work the ball out to the right. It then deflects loose into the centre for Castrop. He should score, but his effort is too close to Batz, who makes a stunning save.

Lee lets fly

A bouncing ball lands at the feet of Lee, who hammers a half-volley goalwards, but narrowly misses the target.

Big chance for Weiper

Mainz's striker is sent through on goal by Sano with only Nicolas to beat from a tough angle, but the Gladbach goalkeeper stays tall to make an important stop.

Back underway

The Mainz players are greeted by the A-Team theme as they re-enter the field. They could do with a performance of a similar magnitude to the team of heroes in the second half.

Half-time: Mainz 0-0 Gladbach

Sadly for this game, much of the game's talking points have been ruled out by the referee's whistle. The visitors almost took the lead early on when Castrop had his effort cleared off the line by Leitsch. From the resulting corner, Leitsch appeared to have headed the ball into his own net only for replays to reveal that the ball had struck the hand of Engelhardt on its way in. Fabio Moreno Fell then struck the woodwork twice for Mainz, but he was unfortunately offside in the build-up. Both sides will need to improve in the second half.

Mainz still yet to have a shot

It hasn't been a game full of chances so far; the major points of action have both been ruled out by the referee's whistle. That means Mainz are still yet to have a shot.

Mainz want a penalty

Netz appears to clear the ball against his own hand, but the referee waives away the Mainz protests. The Gladbach man was actually outside the box, so it wouldn't have been a penalty anyway.

Mainz's Jamie Vardy?

Moreno Fell is starting for Mainz today despite spending last season in the sixth tier of German football. He is already 25 and has spent the season so far playing for Mainz's second team, where he has scored nine goals.

Off the woodwork (twice)!

Moreno Fell, who was playing in the sixth tier of German football last season, almost gets himself on the scoresheet. A loose ball spins through to him in the penalty area, and he shoots only to see his effort bounce clear off the bar! The ball is then sent back across to the Mainz man, and this time his header bounces away off the post. However, it wouldn't have counted anyway, as Moreno Fell was offside during his initial chance.

Scally to miss Wolfsburg game

Scally earns himself a place in the book after launching a ball into the air to delay the restart. That means the American will be banned for Gladbach's next game against Wolfsburg.

Good strike

Castrop and Reitz combine well on the right to give the former space in the middle. Castrop then bursts through the centre and hammers a shot goalwards with his left that narrowly misses the target.
21'

Just wide

Tabaković gets his head on the end of a cross from the left, but the striker can't quite hit the target from a great position.

The ball is in the net

But it won't count! After Castrop's effort is cleared off the line, the corner is sent in from the right and flicked on, where the unfortunate Leitsch heads the ball into his own net. Luckily for the defender, after a lengthy review, a handball from Engelhardt is spotted, and the goal is chalked off.

Wholesale changes for Mainz

Interim coach Benjamin Hoffmann, who replaced Bo Henriksen earlier this week, has made seven changes to the team that slumped to a 4-0 defeat in Freiburg last week - only one of which was enforced owing to Paul Nebel's red card. Da Costa, Sano, Lee and Mwene are the only players to keep their places. The return of Amiri (pictured) from suspension is a big boost for the home side.
camera-photo

Two Gladbach changes

Eugen Polanski has brought in two new faces compared to his side's 0-0 draw against Leipzig last Friday, with Reyna (pictured) and Machino replacing injured duo Neuhaus and Honorat. As Kleindienst is also out of action again, the Foals' attacking options are somewhat limited this evening.

Benjamin Hoffmann on facing Gladbach

Speaking at the pre-match press conference after taking over from Henriksen on an interim basis, Hoffmann said: "The priority right now is to give the lads a bit of self-confidence and clear their minds. We'll have a lot of conversations and training to do just that. What they managed to achieve last season was not all that long ago. We’ll make sure they’re reminded of that. Playing with a sense of freedom is the main thing."

Eugen Polanski on facing Mainz

"We were a little surprised by the late nature of the change of coach, but we'll just focus on our strengths. We'd already analysed the opponent, so the whole thing doesn't really impact us. Benni Hoffmann played a similar system in the reserves and now has just two days to discuss things with the team. We don't expect much to change with Mainz."

Streak over

Gladbach's five-match unbeaten run in all competitions was ended in the DFB Cup last 16 on Tuesday. The Foals went down 2-1 at home to Bundesliga rivals St. Pauli, in what was Polanski's fourth defeat in 11 competitive matches as either interim or first-team head coach.
camera-photo

Henriksen dismissed

Mainz relieved Bo Henriksen of his duties as head coach with immediate effect on Wednesday. An official statement on the Mainz website confirmed that club leadership and the Danish tactician had "mutually agreed to end their working relationship". U23s coach Benjamin Hoffmann will replace Henriksen on an interim basis.

Mainz's downward trend

Mainz are bottom of the Bundesliga for the first time in two years, following what's been their joint-worst-ever start to a top-flight season after 12 games (W1, D3, L8).
