Full-time: Freiburg 1-3 Augsburg

It's three points for Sandro Wagner in his debut match in charge of a top-flight team! Freiburg came back into it in the second half, with Grifo's converted penalty sparking some belief back into the hosts, but Augsburg held firm. Dahmen, Gouweleeuw and Matsima produced a convincing second half defensive display which meant that their first half dominance ultimately proved decisive.

Off the line!

A cross from the right falls kindly to Höler at the penalty spot inside the Augsburg area. The No. 9 aims a shot towards the right of the goal, but Matsima is there to clear it off the line with a sure-fire goal-saving block. Dahmen was beaten then...

Another double change

It's Wanger's turn for a double substitution. Wolf, who had just received a yellow card, comes off alongside Fellhauer to be replaced by Zesiger and Maier as Wagner looks to protect his side's lead.

Would've been some goal from Gouweleeuw

An Augsburg cross is headed clear to Gouweleeuw on the edge of the Freiburg box. The Dutchman goes for the spectacular with a first-time volley and connects perfectly with it. It's looping in at the far post but Atubolu pulls of a fantastic save to tip it wide.
84'

Feisty encounter

Play is a becoming a little stop-start here as very physical challenges are being put in from both sides.

Double change

Freiburg continue to chase the 3-1 deficit. Schuster opts to bring on debutant Scherhant and Makengo to try and find a response.

Head injury concern

There's an extended stoppage whilst first Jakić, then Manzambi receive treatment for suspected head injuries. However, they are now both fit to continue and play resumes.
79'

Wall does its job

A foul on Jakić just outside the Freiburg penalty area results in a free-kick, which Tietz steps up to take. It's a promising position, but the forward blasts it into the wall.
75'

Flashed over

Freiburg substitute Irié shows why fans of his club can be excited about him this season. The debutant cuts in off the right flank, beats his man and then lets a venomous shot fly towards the far corner, but it's just off target. He only had one thing on his mind then - to make something happen and shoot.

Further changes

Both managers looks to the bench again. Rexhbecaj and Röhl replace debutants Saad and Suzuki for Augsburg and Freiburg, respectively.

Freiburg leading the way in terms of xG

info-small
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
The data suggests that Julian Schuster's side have been rather wasteful in front of goal, whilst Sandro Wagner's Augsburg side have been clinical. Can Freiburg now start to make their chances count?

Half-time: Freiburg 0-3 Augsburg

It's a dream start to life in the Bundesliga for Sandro Wagner. His side had to weather initial pressure from hosts Freiburg, and were glad to have not gone behind after Höler's apparent opener was chalked off for offside. They found their groove before long, with Giannoulis, Matsima and Wolf all showing their clinical best with three unanswered goals. Freiburg will lament missed opportunities but may feel lifted by the fact they have had chances of their own.

Wolf makes it three!

Augsburg have been the definition of clinical this half. A spectacular block from Matsima prevents a promising Dinkçi shot from reaching his keeper. Freiburg have a corner, but Augsburg get it away before Wolf's high-pressing is rewarded as he charges down the ball and wins it off the last Freiburg defender. He runs from inside his own half before calmly slotting it past Atubolu into the bottom left corner for his side's third of the afternoon.

How are they not level?

Höler is played through by Manzambi for a one-on-one with Dahmen. The keeper rushes off his line to make the save, but the rebound is worked to Suzuki, who only has Gouweleeuw to beat on the line but slips and skies his effort. A golden opportunity for the Japanese to score on his debut.

First yellow for Dinkçi

The midfielder trips Saad to prevent an Augsburg counter-attack and consequently is the first player to go into the book this afternoon.
37'

Scooped away by Dahmen

A cross from the right plays Höler through to the byline down the channel. The No. 9 takes his effort first time, trying to lob Dahmen again, but the Augsburg keeper is alert to the danger this time and beats the ball away from the far post.
35'

Fellhauer shoots

Augsburg have their tails up now. Wolf cuts in off the right flank and tees up Fellhauer, whose low right-footed effort is dragged just wide of the left post.
33'

Giannoulis scores first goal of the Wagner era!

It's Augsburg who stun the Europa-Park Stadion by taking the lead here. Wolf plays a whipped cross from the right touchline, which Freiburg fail to deal with. It travels all the way to Giannoulis on the far side, who strikes first-time with his left foot. His effort takes a huge deflection off Kübler, which wrong-foots Atubolu and results in the opener here.

Over from Dinkçi

That was a real chance. Suzuki does well down the left, beating his marker before picking out Dinkçi with a low ball across the box. The right-midfielder is just leaning back too much, however, and blasts his effort over the bar from close range.

Another long throw

It's Lienhart again, but the Austrian takes it from the other side. This time, it drops for Grifo, but the Italian's effort is blocked on the edge of the box.

Big let off for Augsburg!

Freiburg thought they had taken the lead thanks to calamity at the back from the visitors. A mix-up between Dahmen and Massengo at the back is pounced upon by Manzambi, who plays it to Höler. The No.9 then chips Dahmen, but the goal doesn't stand; the VAR review found an offside in the build-up.

Debutant Saad looking sharp

Augsburg's Tunisian winger, who joined this summer from St. Pauli, has caught the eye for the Fuggerstädter so far this half. He's constantly looking to play directly and launch counter-attacks, and has drawn a few fouls so far too.
11'

First corner goes Augsburg's way

A cross from the left flank from Schlotterbeck is headed down in the box by Kömür, taking a deflection as it goes behind. Kömür takes the subsequent set-piece - an in-swinger from the left - but Freiburg head it clear.
7'

Cautious start

Both sides are sizing each up a bit in the early stages here and have so far been unwilling to gamble going forward. Freiburg have enjoyed more possession whilst Augsburg have been looking to counter. Neither side's approach has so far proved threatening.
4'
