Zivzivadze goes close

He finds himself with time and space in the box, although from a tight angle, but doesn't get enough bend on his effort toward the far post.

Home pressure continues

Heidenheim continue to put Bremen on the backfoot, but will need to capitalise on this pressure soon if they're to rescue an unlikely result.

Ducksch gets his goal, 3-0!

And what a goal it is! Play should arguably have been stopped after the ball hit the ref in the build up, but there can be no complaints about the finish. Bremen break away through Weiser, who feeds Ducksch a few yards outside the area; the striker then whips a delightful first time effort into the top corner, sending the Heidenheim players running furiously back to the referee.

Huge block!

Agu finds himself on the right, and bursts past a Heidenheim shirt to give himself space for a cross in the box. He finds Ducksch with a cutback, but his shot is blocked by flying Heidenheim bodies.

A game of two halves ... so far

Heidenheim have looked like a different side in this half, putting Bremen under real pressure. The visitors are still causing problems on the break, however.

The hosts' strong start to the half seems to be worrying the visitors, with Stage's rash tackle on Scienza earning him a booking.

Warning sign

Ducksch breaks away and, without support, drives directly toward goal. A red and blue shirt can't get close enough in time, but Müller does enough to put him off, as the Bremen striker puts his effort wide of the near post from around 12 yards out.

A heavy touch from Zetterer gifts Heidenheim the ball just outside the box; he sets up Wanner, whose bending effort drifts over the bar.

Half-time: Heidenheim 0-2 Werder Bremen

Bremen take a two goal lead into half-time, having not been troubled by the hosts so far. Heidenheim had more of the ball in the opening 15 minutes, but were susceptible to counter-attacks, which ultimately led to their downfall. Schmid coolly converted a penalty after Grüll was pulled down in the area, before Stage doubled their lead with a brilliant header just over 10 minutes before the break.

Getting closer

The last time these two met, they played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in Bremen. Heidenheim will be hoping for a much different scoreline this time around, but it won't be easy with Bremen finishing the season well.

More on those teams

There's little change on either side from their previous games. Müller and Honsak come in for Feller and Krätzig for Heidenheim, while Bremen only make one change with Grüll coming in for Burke.

Theuerkauf to hang up the boots

When his contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season, Norman Theuerkauf will end his professional career after ten years with Heidenheim. As of the 2025/26 season, the 38-year-old will take up the role of head coach of the club's U15 team.

The season finale

Bremen come into this final day fixture sat in eighth, one place and six points better of their ninth placed finish in 2023/24. They could finish as high as seventh, and extend their points improvement to nine, however, Ole Werner will surely be proud of his side's performance this season regardless. Although they narrowly missed out on European football, they've provided plenty of promise for next season with their performances this campaign. Heidenheim on the other hand, come into this final day hoping to climb out of the relegation play-off spot at the last minute. After a sensational opening Bundesliga season that saw them qualify for the Europa Conference League, Frank Schmidt's men will need to secure three points against a tough Bremen side if they're to give themselves the possibility of outright safety.

Frank Schmidt on facing Bremen

“Werder Bremen are a team in great form. They’re third place in the away table and I think they’re also third in the form table over the last 10 games. Bremen are a team that like to go through the middle a lot and play directly. They can get up the pitch quickly with Marvin Ducksch. I think [Jens] Stage is the most dangerous No. 8 in the league. [Romano] Schmid is also having an outstanding season, just as Werder have had a great season themselves overall.”
camera-photo

Ole Werner on facing Heidenheim

"We've often struggled in the past to remain patient against them. Heidenheim are a very physical team and set pieces are a key part of their game. Based on the current state of the table, they will look to attack early on and keep things hectic."

Seven up for Bremen

Bremen go into the final day unbeaten in seven Bundesliga matches - although they have taken three draws in a row.

Heidenheim find it hard to score at home

On the other hand, Heidenheim have failed to score in their last three home matches. They have never before gone four home matches without a goal in professional football.

Hard to score against Heidenheim

Heidenheim are on a run of three consecutive clean sheets for the first time in the Bundesliga.

Final-day permutations

As things stand, Heidenheim will finish 16th and contest the play-odd against the third-placed team in Bundesliga 2. The only way they can avoid that is if they win and Hoffenheim lose to Bayern in a way that overturns the six-goal difference between them. As mentioned earlier, Bremen's top-six hopes are all but over.

Heidenheim's trademark resilience was there for all to see as the Bundesliga minnows thrice came from behind to draw a six-goal thriller at the Weser-Stadion on Matchday 17. They're now unbeaten in three top-flight meetings with the Green-Whites, having won home and away in 2023/24.

Watch: Union Berlin 0-3 Heidenheim - highlights

Heidenheim no longer have automatic relegation to worry about, thanks to a swashbuckling win in the capital and defeats for Bochum and Holstein Kiel, who are down. Frank Schmidt's team will likely contest the play-off, but there is still a slender chance of them securing outright safety with three points on the final day - if 15th-placed Hoffenheim lose big to champions Bayern Munich.

Watch: Bremen 0-0 Leipzig - highlights

Werder's hopes of playing in Europe next season are all but over after last weekend's goalless draw with top-six rivals Leipzig. Even if they win and Leipzig and Mainz lose on the final day, it's going to take an improbable swing in goal difference to lift them into sixth place.
