Relegation latest

Bochum start the day in 16th - the relegation play-off spot. They're four points adrift of outright safety and only one clear of Holstein Kiel, who are at home to VfB Stuttgart, and two ahead of a Heidenheim team that visit Hoffenheim tomorrow.

A bond for life

Bayern and Bochum don't have a lot in common in terms of footballing history, but they do share the Bundesliga's longest fan friendship. The story goes that 'Bochumer Jungen', the Ruhr club's oldest fan group, stepped in to stop some other Bochum supporters from attacking some of their Bayern counterparts following a defeat to the record champions on 3 November 1973. After a reconciliatory drink, contact details were exchanged and the seeds planted for the fan group bromance, which is still going strong to this day.

A unique club steeped in gold

Bayern, playing their first Bundesliga home game since officially turning 125 on 27 February, are Germany's record champions with 33 league titles, including a record 32 in the Bundesliga era. Thomas Müller's been around for 12 of them, making him the German top flight's most decorated player. Will he get his hands on a 13th Meisterschale come the end of the current campaign?

The defending champions are at home to Werder Bremen this afternoon. If Bayern win and they slip up, the gap between first and second could stretch to as many as 10 points, with nine games to go after today.

French duo rested

Dayot Upamecano and Kingsley Coman are not in the Bayern squad today. They're not injured, though, and will almost certainly be back in the side for Tuesday's Champions League return leg in Leverkusen.

Joao Palhinha and Raphaël Guerreiro are the double pivot, while Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry and Thomas Müller complete the attack. A back four of Sacha Boey, Eric Dier, Hiroki Ito and Josip Stanišić sit in front of young Urbig in the Bayern goal. As for Bochum, Hecking sticks with the side that lost 1-0 to Bochum.

With Manuel Neuer sidelined after sustaining a calf injury in Bayern's 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, 21-year-old Jonas Urbig will make his Bundesliga debut today. The winter signing from Cologne, who played 32 minutes of the last 16 first leg in Munich, made 10 Bundesliga 2 appearances earlier this season before switching to the record champions. "I don't want to put any great pressure on Jonas. He's done everything right so far in training and in the match. That should give him confidence," Kompany said. "We've got confidence in him for the games to come that he can deal with things like in training. And if not, no stress. He's got talent and our trust."

Bayern fans will show off a vast tifo display at home to Bochum as the Rekordmeister celebrate 125 years since their foundation.

"We want to be fresh for every game. It's not a choice, but a necessity to use throughout the day. It's about rotation and freshness. A question of mentality is then how you prepare for it, so there are no changes now with Bochum in mind. We are where we are in the league because we approach all games in the same way and don't differentiate between Dortmund and Bochum. But we can't change the calendar and we're not annoyed about it. We accept it for what it is."

Dieter Hecking on facing Bayern

"Everyone knows what to expect when travelling to Munich. We will have to suffer and we will have to run a lot. The situation going into the match is clear, and we will have to invest a lot if we want to get a result there."

Bochum fighting for survival

Bochum, who are in their 38th year in the Bundesliga, currently have their worst-ever record at this stage of a season, with just 17 points after 24 match days. Nevertheless, they can still avoid relegation, and with coach Dieter Hecking boasting a league-high five wins against Bayern (from 25 career meetings with the Bavarians), they can hope for one or more precious points against the league leaders.

The Kompany effect

Only three times in their history have Bayern Munich had more points at this stage of a season than they currently do (61) – the last time being nine years ago under Pep Guardiola. Even better, the record champions have only once had more goals after 24 matchdays than they do this season (72): that was in 2021/22, when they racked up 75 goals under Julian Nagelsmann.

The renaissance continues apace for Leon Goretzka, who netted the second goal in Bayern Munich's 3-1 win at VfB Stuttgart. Out of favour at the start of the season, the 30-year-old Germany international has battled back to become a key element in the engine room again for the record champs. On Matchday 24, Bayern entertain Bochum – Goretzka’s hometown club, whom he was cheering on at first-hand in the relegation play-off last season.
