Full-time: Union 0-1 Kiel

Kiel hold onto their first half lead to snatch their first ever Bundesliga away win. Gigović's opener just before half-time wins it for The Storks. Union emerged after the break with renewed attacking intent, starting lively much like they did in the first. But after Kiel survived the opening pressure, the Berliners never really looked like levelling the scores, despite their barrage of corners. Harres also had a goal disallowed for offside midway through the half, but Kiel won't mind that, as they have the three points.

Juranović's name taken

The wide player is the lates Union man to go into the book, doing so for his overzealous complaints to the referee, following a foul from Volland.

Yet another corner

For all of their set-pieces this game, Union haven't managed to use them. Rønnow came up for the most recent one, but again the Berliners couldn't make anything of it.

Roussillon goes through

There's a slip at the back for Kiel, which allows the substitute to run through into the box. Before he can shoot, however, Schulz comes across to make a good block.
83'

Zec down

There's a stoppage as the Kiel central defender stays down, with what seems to be his knee giving him some discomfort. He leaves the field for further treatment and has since been substituted off. Javorček also replaces Geschwill.

Still just the one goal

Gigović's opener remains all that separates these sides. With just over 10 minutes left on the clock, are we going to see another goal here?
78'

Volland in the book

The substitute has only been on for two minutes but has already picked up a yellow card for a tactical foul on Remberg.
75'

Real chance

Juranović controls a long ball over the top brilliantly down the right channel. He drives into the box, shooting at the near post, but Weiner is equal to the attempt. It wouldn't have counted anyway, as he was in an offside position.
73'

Woodwork!

Machino goes for the spectacular from distance and isn't far away at all. His powerful right-footed effort is aimed towards the top right corner, but the ball clips the outside of the post on it's way wide.
71'

Double change

Rapp makes his own double substitution, bringing in Skrzybski and Ivezić for Harres and Becker.
70'

Weiner down

Union swing in a corner, which Kiel manage to half-clear. Hollerbach whips the loose ball back in and Weiner punches it clear, but stays down after a mid-air collision with two Union attackers. He's back to his feet now, though.
65'

Double change

Baumgart goes to the bench, making a double substitution. Rothe and Jeong makes way for Roussillon and Bénes. Can the fresh legs find a way back into this for the hosts?
61'

Disallowed!

Knudsen slips it through to Holtby inside the Union box. He lays it off for Rosenboom who then threads it through to Harres, who finishes past Rønnow from close range. It won't stand, however, as the assistant had his flag raised. Holtby was offside in the build-up.
59'

Wild effort

Becker goes on another marauding run from defence, this time up the right flank. He plays it deep to Machino at the far post, who heads it down for Knudsen, but the first-time shot is struck wildly and goes high and wide of the mark.
58'

Just wide

A deep free-kick is floated into the Kiel box. Doekhi rises highest, steering his header narrowly wide of the right post.

The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
The xG values suggest that Kiel are good value for their lead here.

Chaos

A long throw-in for Union causes mayhem in the Kiel penalty area. Doekhi gets a flick on and Ilić heads it goalward, but Weiner reacts well to make the stop.

Another corner

Hollerbach wins it again, his attempted cross being blocked by Zec, but again Kiel win the header and clear the corner.
47'

Almost an own goal!

Hollerbach puts a driven cross in to the Kiel box. Remberg, in trying to volley it clear, slices the contact, sending the ball looping back towards his goal. Weiner is alert to the danger and tips it behind for a corner, which Union don't manage to capitalise on.
46'

Back underway!

Kiel have the ball rolling again for the second half here. Baumgart makes one change at half-time with Ilić coming on for Ljubicic.

Half-time: Union 0-1 Kiel

The hosts started the half the more lively of the sides, winning frequent corners and creating multiple chances. Kiel stuck together and were rewarded for their defensive efforts when a brave drive from Becker started a move that resulted in their only goal just before half-time. The visitors survived a late scare from an Union free-kick to hold onto their lead. Goalkeeper Weiner has been in good form for The Storks.

Gigović finds the opener!

Becker drives up the pitch from deep, nutmegging an Union defender along the way. He plays Machino through to the byline down the left, who cuts it back for Gigović. Gigović's fourth of the season allows Kiel to maintain their record of scoring in every Bundesliga away match this season.

The wide man whips a really dangerous cross into the six-yard box from the left. An unconvincing defensive header from Becker deflects off another Kiel defender but ultimately lands in the gloves of Weiner.

No way through

Union started very brightly, but Kiel have defended resiliently so far, limiting chances since the initial spell.

In from Jeong

The attacking midfielder whips in a promising cross from in off the left flank, but Zec is there to head it clear.

Long throw-in

Machino has been troubling the Union defence with a series of long throw-ins. Most recently, Komenda flicks it on and it nearly falls to Harres, but Union manage to clear.
12'

So close!

Another corner comes in from the left for Union, finding Doekhi at the far post. The defender heads down towards the bottom right corner, but Weiner pulls off a fantastic save at full stretch to deny him.

Good battling

Both sides have been very physical in the duels so far.
10'

On target

Juranović whips a cross into Rothe from the right. The youngster opts to strike it on the volley, but he doesn't get the contact on it that he would've wanted, as the ball is hit into the ground, allowing Weiner to collect comfortably.
8'

Pinball

A Rothe long throw-in causes mayhem in the Kiel box, but there's no way through for Union and The Storks get it clear.
7'

Another corner

This time, an out-swinger comes in from the right from Juranović, but Knudsen rises highest to head it clear.
6'

Good header

Machino plays a deep cross from the left towards Rosenboom at the far post. The wide player makes a good connection on the header, sending it back across goal, but Rønnow reacts well to dive and hold it.
2'

Early corner

Good initial pressure from Union is rewarded with a corner. Juranović swings it in from the left, Weiner punches it to the edge of the box with the ball falling to Jeong, who strikes it on the volley. It's a powerful hit, but well blocked.

DFB tribunal rejects Union Berlin's appeal following match-interrupted draw with Bochum

Steffen Baumgart's view on Kiel

“I wouldn’t say we’re favourites, that’s more something that journalists use. We’re facing a team who have had similar results to us recently. It hasn’t all been positive but all their games have been tight. They’re a team who score a lot of goals in one particular way, but they also concede a lot of goals. For us, it’s about winning at home, regardless of who the opposition is.”
camera-photo

Marcel Rapp's view on Union

"Crunch time begins now. It's only about us. We're running out of games and need to pick up points. Our focus is fully on Union. We want to get a result in front of a sold-out away crowd of 2,500 fans and have full conviction there. The result [Union's 6-0 loss to Dortmund] shouldn't be seen as too important. It was 2-0 until the 75th minute, but I believe we're capable of scoring in Berlin."
