Full time: St. Pauli 3-1 Holstein Kiel

A fully deserved first home victory of the season for Pauli, who were the better team for the majority of the match. Eggestein will take the headlines with a goal and two assists but it was a brilliant team performance – and one that will give them hope of pulling clear of the relegation places. Worrying times for Kiel though, despite their late consolation goal.

Great finish!

Kiel pull one back through a fine strike from Harres, who drives into the box and slams a low shot into the corner. It's too little, far too late from the visitors though.

Done and dusted

This is another lovely goal. Treu plays a wonderfully disguised pass into the feet of Eggestein, who turns inside the box and applies a left-footed finish. A goal to go with his two assists today!

Afolayan again

The attacker chases what seems to be a lost cause on the left but wins the ball ahead of Becker. He darts into the box but seems to get caught in two minds about whether to shoot or cross. He ends up doing neither as a defender nicks the ball off his toe.

Now or never

Time is running out for Kiel to get something from this game. They've only had one shot on target so far, and that was the penalty Arp missed.

Next change

Guilavogui, scorer of Pauli's second goal, limps off clutching the back of his right thigh. He's replaced on the field by Sinani.

Attacking changes

Kiel have nothing left to lose here so are throwing caution to the wind with a couple of attack-minded substitutions in a bid to get a foothold in the game. Might that offer opportunities on the counter for Pauli?
camera-photo

Can't hold him down

Eggestein might be credited with both assists in this game but Afolayan has given the pass before the pass both times, unsettling the visiting defence with his pace and trickery.
64'

Worrying trend

KIel have conceded at least two goals in each of their away games in the Bundesliga this season. They have also let in a league-high five goals in transition after losing possession.
62'

Afolayan making mischief

The Pauli forward drives down the left, goers around his marker on the outside and looks to cross into the middle, but a covering defender blocks for a corner.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
The score should be 1-1 going by the teams' expected goals (xG) but instead it's Pauli with some daylight.

Superb counter!

What a goal. Guilavogui is the scorer but much of the credit should go to Afolayan, who does brilliantly to spin his marker in the middle of the pitch before driving forward, holding off a challenge. He slides the ball to his left for Eggestein, who immediately plays in Guilavogui, arriving in the middle of the penalty area. He sweeps home with his first touch for his first ever Bundesliga goal.

Half-time: St. Pauli 1-0 Holstein Kiel

The visitors were on top early on but Pauli have grown into the game and gradually taken charge. They took a deserved lead though a fine Saliakas strike (pictured) but have goalkeeper Vasilj to thank that they are still in front at the interval after he kept out Arp’s penalty following a sloppy header by Saliakas.

Pauli finally have their first goal on home turf this season and the stadium erupts! Erras to the rescue

Pauli venture down the right again and again find space to cross. This time only a long, outstretched leg from Erras prevents the home side getting a shot away.

Probing

While Kiel looked incisive in the opening few minutes, Pauli have settled now and are beginning to settle into a rhythm as they get forward with more regularity.

Positive from Pauli

Irvine gets behind the visiting defence down the right and although his cross into the middle is dealt with by the defence, it's a good sign for the hosts that they were able to find space in a dangerous position for the first time.

The visitors get forward well and Remberg again has some space, around 25 yards out. He shoots once more but this effort is nowhere near as close as his first one and sails into the stands.
4'

Bright start

Kiel may be just a couple of points off the bottom of the league but they have started with confidence here, perhaps aware that this match against a direct relegation rival presents a glorious opportunity to climb the standings.

Peeeep!

Kiel get the ball rolling and have a shot at goal almost immediately but Remberg's long-range effort after just six seconds spins narrowly wide.

Pauli unchanged

The home side also suffered defeat last time out, losing 2-0 at Gladbach, but head coach Alexander Blessin has kept faith with the same 11 players that started that game.

Three changes for Kiel

Magnus Knudsen, Finn Porath and Fiete Arp all come into the team today following last week's 3-0 defeat against Mainz. Tymoteusz Puchacz, Shuto Machino and Steven Skrzybski are the players to make way. The former two are on the bench but Skrzybski is absent with a cold.

Friday-night first!

Tonight represents the very first time Holstein Kiel will be playing under the Friday-night lights in the Bundesliga!
camera-photo

Unwanted first

St. Pauli are the first Bundesliga club in history to remain goalless in the first five home games of a season. Alexander Blessin's team will be keen to put that right against the division's second-from-bottom side this evening.
camera-photo

Lest we forget

Last season, Pauli won the second-division championship by just one point from runners-up Kiel. Tonight's hosts won the last three meetings between the sides in the second tier.

Something has to give

We're 11 games into the season and St. Pauli are still awaiting a first home win of the season. Kiel, meanwhile, have yet to win away in this, their first ever campaign in the top-flight.

Marcel Rapp on facing St. Pauli

"Everyone can see the situation in the table and knows what an important match it is. It doesn't give us anything talking about it, however. We have to focus on how to win the match, prepare as best we can and be fully on it mentally."
camera-photo

Alexander Blessin on Holsten Kiel

"We know how tough it's going to be. It'll be a battle for every blade of grass, and we have to be ready. Kiel have done well to hold their own in recent games and they've been unlucky at times. Against Mainz they didn't perform as well as they can. It's the same for us – if we don't give 100 percent, we'll struggle against any opposition. We went into the season aiming to go to the limit every time. If we do that, we have a chance of beating anyone."

Defensive advantage?

Pauli start the encounter one spot above Kiel in 16th, but having conceded half the number of goals (14 to 28).

St. Pauli's serious shifts

No side in the Bundesliga has covered as much ground as Pauli so far this season - 1334 kilometres. Kiel are bottom of that metric on 1067km.
