Full-time: Bremen 2-1 Kiel

A superb header from substitute Oliver Burke in the 89th minute proved to be the winner for Bremen here, who finally get their first home win of the season. Kiel will feel hard done by as they worked tirelessly all second half and were undoubtedly the better of the sides immediately after the break, equalising through Harres, who gets his first ever Bundesliga goal. Ultimately the substitutions made the difference for Bremen.

Schmid hits the bar!

Weiner gives the ball away playing out from the back for Kiel. Bremen give it to Schmid who runs unchallenged into the box and squanders a one-on-one situation by smacking it onto the crossbar.

Burke with what is surely the winner!

Schmid wins the ball back high up the pitch. He gives it to Topp on the right, who plays a great cross into Oliver Burke, who rises highest and heads back across goal. Could this be Bremen's first home win of the season?

Triple save by Zetterer!

What a chance that was for Kiel! Holtby takes a deep free-kick. It's nodded down to Arp, who has only just come on. He shoots, but the keeper does excellently to deny him. Porath follows it up, Zetterer saves again and Knudsen tries for a third time, which Zetterer saves again.

Half-time: Bremen 1-0 Kiel

The hosts go into the break as deserved leaders. They started quickly and should have taken the lead through Ducksch before ten minutes had gone, if it wasn't for a spectacular save by Weiner. A combative period in the middle of the half didn't see many clear cut chances made for either side, before Stage took the game by the scruff of it's neck with a fantastic long-ranged strike. Bremen thought they'd doubled their lead just three minutes later, but Schmid was judged to have handled the ball as it crossed the line, leading the goal to be chalked off.

Schmid thought he'd made it two!

Stage the scorer seemed to have turned provider. He puts in a delightful low cross from the right of the box towards the back post, where Schmid is running in. The winger bundles it across the line with a clumsy finish, but the goal is rightly ruled out as the ball struck Schmid's hand on the way in. So, it's still 1-0 here.

No way through

Neither side has managed to find a goal so far. Marvin Ducksch has come the closest but Weiner is in good form between the Kiel sticks.

Deep from Skrzybski

The Kiel free-kick is floated towards the back post. Remberg makes the first contact to prod it goalwards, but the referee pulls it back for a foul on a Bremen player.
25'

Friedl booked

The Bremen captain brings down Harres as Kiel were looking to break and thus picks up the first yellow card of the game.
23'

Nearly from Harres

The first real chance of the game for Kiel. The forward manages to shake off a couple of Bremen defenders to get to the byline within the Bremen penalty area. He crosses and his cross is deflected, very nearly into the path of Skrzybski in the middle, if it weren't for an excellent clearance from Lynen.
19'

Skrzybski down

A coming together between Veljković and Skrzybski at the half-way line leaves the Kiel man down, seemingly having taken a knock to the face. There is a stoppage whilst he receives treatment, but he's back on his feet now and the game continues.
17'

Side netting from Ducksch

The ball is up in the air in the Kiel box. As it drops, Ducksch attempts a first time volley with the outside of his boot. He connects with it well but it flies into the side netting. Bremen keep on pushing.
15'

Njinmah showing great skill

The young winger manages to get into the box with a lovely flick which takes the ball over the head of the Kiel defender, but the angle is too tight for a shot he's closed down by the recovering defender and the onrushing Weiner.
12'

What a save from Weiner!

Köhn manages to create a bit of space on the left for Bremen. He shifts the ball onto his left foot before whipping a cross into Ducksch, who's stood in the six-yard box. He meets the ball well with a powerful header but Weiner makes a spectacular reflex save from point blank range to tip it over the bar. Nothing comes of the corner for Bremen.
9'

Agu recovers well

Puchacz makes good ground down the left for Kiel. He gets to the byline and tries to get round Agu, nutmegging him but Agu does well to shield the ball and stop him from collecting it on the other side. He draws a foul in the process.
6'

Over from Stage

Schmid gets to the byline down the left and crosses in towards Stage, who's unmarked in the middle, but he can't keep his effort down.
2'

Early chance for Ducksch

The striker picks the ball up drives into the box but his attempted shot is blocked.

More on those teams

Following their first ever Bundesliga victory last time out in a 1-0 win over Heidenheim, Marcel Rapp's Kiel side is unchanged. They face a much altered Bremen outfit who have made four changes from thier 4-1 defeat against Gladbach. Following his dismissal, Weiser is suspended. Pieper, Malatini and Bittencourt all drop to the bench. In their places come Jung, Veljković, Stage and Köhn. Werner will be hoping that this different backline will be more solid than the one that was fielded last time out at Gladbach.

Bremen starting XI

Zetterer - Veljković, Friedl, Jung - Agu, Stage, Lynen, Köhn - Njinmah, Schmid – Ducksch

Bremen subs

Backhaus, Deman, Stark, Pieper, Malatini, Bittencourt, Alvero, Burke, Topp

Kiel starting XI

Weiner - Ivezić, Erras, Geschwill - Becker (c), Remberg, Knudsen, Gigović, Puchacz - Skrzybski, Harres

Kiel subs

Dähne, Komenda, Rosenboom, Javorček, Porath, Holtby, Schulz, Machino, Arp

Kiel's porous defence

Only bottom side Bochum have shipped on more occasions than Kiel this term, but it is away from home where they have really struggled, conceding 15 of their 23 strikes on their travels. Each of those four games has seen them concede twice, so Bremen will fancy their chances of finding the back of the net here.

Bremen without Weiser

The hosts will be without the right-back, who was sent off against Borussia Mönchengladbach last time out. He has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, racking up one goal and four assists, meaning he will be sorely missed today.
camera-photo

Bremen's home struggles

Die Werderaner have not enjoyed playing at their home ground this season. Only two of their 12 points have come at the Weserstadion, which is the lowest proportion (17%) of any team in the German top flight.

Tale of the tape

These teams have met just four times previously, and never in the Bundesliga with this being Kiel's maiden Bundesliga campaign. Bremen have been victorious on just one occasion, while Kiel prevailed in each of the teams' Bundesliga 2 meetings during the 2021/22 season.
camera-photo

Werner on Kiel

"When you're in a competition, you look at what's happening to your opponents a little more soberly. It's a team that wants to play football. That's why we're warned not only by the result [Kiel's first victory in the Bundesliga against Heidenheim], but also by their performance."
camera-photo

Rapp on Bremen

"We want to get our first win away from home. To do this, we have to be intense and compact again and help each other. If we go a little further in terms of football, I'm optimistic that it can work."
