Full-time: Hoffenheim 1-1 Mainz

An exciting end to the weekend of Bundesliga action, with Mainz roaring into life in the second half after Skov's equaliser. Barkok missed a hatful of chances - including a penalty - and Richter hit the crossbar twice, so the strugglers will make the short trip home with plenty of remorse. Hoffenheim will, on balance, be the happier to come away with a point.

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
They have had a penalty saved and two shots hit the crossbar - Mainz will be upset not to have taken more from this game.

Off the bar - again!

Almost a carbon copy of that last Richter effort as the ball once again cannons back off the crossbar! Incredible!
86'

Another chance for Mainz

A free-kick just outside the area for Mainz, who have gone close already from this range tonight...
81'

Off the bar!

Richter rattles the crossbar, but it was the fingertips of Baumann who prevented it from going under the crossbar and in. Another fine save, as Mainz continue to hunt down these three points.

Penalty killer

Baumann has saved all three penalties he has faced this season, and a record 13 throughout his Bundesliga career - more than any other current goalkeeper.

Welcome back Burkardt!

The away fans are in full voice, chanting Jonathan Burkardt's name, and there was a smattering of sporting applause from the home fans as he took to the field. Can this be a fairy-tale comeback?

Baumann saves!

Barkok has missed two big chances in open play, but he takes the responsibility from the penalty spot. He sends it to Baumann's left, but the Hoffenheim keeper goes the right way and makes a save!

A fantastic sliding challenge from the US defender denies Ajorque, and then it is Barkok who misses an open goal from five yards out!

Mainz coming back at Hoffenheim

Mainz have regrouped well and are now pushing for a second goal, with Richter going close twice and Barreiro's effort just now plucked out of the air by Baumann. You get the feeling there will be another goal in this game.

Goal guarantee

It was perhaps premature to be concerned midway through the first half that there had been just two shots on target, since that Skov goal means Hoffenheim have scored at least once in all of their games this season. So a goal was guaranteed to come at some point...

Skov's stats

This is Skov's tenth game of the season and he has had a hand in five goals now, scoring three himself and setting up two.

Triple change

Matarazzo rings the changes by making three substitutions at half-time. Can the newcomers breathe fresh life into the Sinsheimers?

Half-time: Hoffenheim 0-1 Mainz

Probably a deserved lead for Mainz, but Hoffenheim came close to levelling in stoppage time - having more shots in those 15 seconds than they had in the rest of the first half. It's advantage Mainz at the break in a game which is now starting to come to life - do not go away!

Flurry of chances!

Four, five or six chances in 20 seconds? The ball was sent towards Zentner's goal several times ad Bülter also headed against the post, but the ball just would not go in for Hoffenheim in that late attack!

Fernandes fires over

It has turned pretty quiet in Sinsheim as Mainz get on top, and Fernandes fires over - another chance for the guests to double their lead.

Baumann denies Barkok

A big chance to make it two for Mainz, with the ball falling for Barkok like a moving penalty, but his shot goes straight at Baumann.

First blood!

After failing to earn a penalty moments earlier, Richter has channelled his frustration into scoring with his next attempt. Fernandes sent him on his way down the left and he cut in before poking his effort into the far corner.

Scrappy affair

There are now a few names in the referee's book, and with the number of fouls exceeding the number of shots, it is easy to see why this is turning quite scrappy.

Don't shoot, don't score

Midway through the first half and we have yet to see the first shot on target. Mainz have had two efforts, but both were no threat to Baumann's goal. If they don't shoot more, it is going to be hard to see a winner here.

Siewert's view on Hoffenheim

"Hoffenheim are a team who are very flexible in terms of their positioning. Their game is clearly defined when they have the ball. That's why we focused on a few things during the international break: What's our DNA when we don't have the ball? How can we regain our compactness? How can we escape the press when we win possession back?"
camera-photo

Matarazzo's view on Mainz

"The last two games have gone well for Mainz. They define themselves by their pressing and don't allow you many chances. It'll be very intense. Their stats don't suggest they should be down the bottom. Their opponents were clinical. There can always be surprises, also regardless of the change of coach. But the style of play in the two games has been very similar to their previous performances."

Home discomforts

Ahead of Matchday 12, Hoffenheim are this season's best away team, with 16 points from a possible 18. At home, however, they've picked up just three across five games. That's a league-low tally shared with bottom side Union Berlin.
