Changes galore for Magdeburg
Reacting to the 2-0 defeat against Bielefeld, Coach Fiedler makes plenty of changes for this one. There are six in total, including Ahl-Holmström starting for Breunig in the centre-forward position. From the domestic to the international stage
The former European Cup winners Magdeburg and Schalke also crossed swords internationally. In the 2nd round of the UEFA Cup in 1977/78, Magdeburg prevailed in the tie between both sides, winning 4-2 at home and 3-1 away. Jürgen Sparwasser scored a memorable hat-trick in the 4-2 home victory.
Long Schalke drought in Magdeburg
Magdeburg have collected seven points from their last three matches against Schalke, with The Royal Blues' last three-pointer being a 4-3 come-from-behind win in September 2023. In Magdeburg, Schalke last won all the way back in December 2000 in the DFB cup quarter-final. The game finished 1-0 that day, thanks to a converted penalty from Jörg Böhme. At that point in time, Schalke were in plying their trade in the Bundesliga, whilst Magdeburg were in Germany's fourth-tier.
