For the visitors, homegrown talent Lenz started as a defensive midfielder in place of the injured Sissoko. The 19-year-old has so far been very involved in the opening minutes and is constantly demanding the ball from Vogt and Co. during Bochum's build-up play from the back.

Bochum's Felix Passlack was a regular starter on the right last season in the Bundesliga, but has only had a brief appearance in the cup so far this season. Kjell Wätjen was brought on as a substitute in the first three competitive matches of 2025/26, but now gets to show what he can do from the start for the first time.

Having started in the DFB Cup with a 4-3-3 formation against BFC Dynamo (which Bochum won 3-1 after extra-time), Dieter Hecking has opted for a 3-5-2 as he did in the last league match against Elversberg. There's also plenty of fresh personnel, with four changes to the line-up which was fielded in the DFB Cup fixture.
Katić and Karaman return
Having missed their last league match in Kaiserslautern, Katić and Karaman make their return to Schalke's starting XI. Karaman wasn't fully fit at the time, whilst Katić served a yellow-red card suspension.

Schalke make three changes to the side that ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory in extra-time against Regionalliga outfit Lok Leipzig in the DFB cup last week. Karius returns in goal for Heekeren, Schallenberg is fit again and plays instead of Grüger, and on the right, Gantenbein starts as he did in the first two league matches. Antwi-Adjei is shifted further forward as a result.

From the Royal Blues to Bochum
Philipp Hofmann came through Schalke's academy, scoring the winning goal for Schalke's U19s in their 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2012 championship final. However, he never made an appearance for Schalke's first team.
Hecking's Schalke past
Dieter Hecking has faced Schalke 30 times as a manager, but none of those clashes have taken place in Bundesliga 2. He's overseen 25 encounters in the Bundesliga, three in the DFB Cup and two in the UEFA Cup. His last match against the Royal Blues was a 2-0 victory with Borussia Mönchengladbach in Gelsenkirchen in February 2019.

Schalke have won all of their last six home matches against the visitors. The last away victory for Bochum in Gelsenkirchen was 22 years ago, when they secured a 2-0 win the the 2002/03 Bundesliga season.

Schalke have won four and drawn one of the last five competitive matches against Bochum, who's last three points against the Royal Blues came in a 2-1 home win in February 2009, when a certain Manuel Neuer was still in goal for Schalke!
