Full-time: St. Pauli 1-0 Hoffenheim

A massive result for St. Pauli, who go five points clear of the bottom three and even further clear of the automatic drop zone. A defensive error let them in for the decisive goal, but they worked every inch to take the points off a Hoffenheim side still not out of the woods yet.

Yikes!

Toure with a brilliant ball into the Pauli box, but it's snuffed out and eventually goes behind for a goal-kick.

Midfield switch

Warm applause for Sinnai as he makes way for Boukhalfa in the Pauli midfield. It's going to be a nervy finish...

Final throw of the dice

And it's Yardımcı - a striker - for left-back Jurásek...

Relegation latest

Pauli will stay 15th as things stand, but with a five-point cushion on Bochum, who occupy the relegation play-off spot ahead of their meeting with Frankfurt on Sunday. Hoffenheim are two places and a point better off.
78'

So close!

Irvine from another corner, arguably an easier one than earlier in the half. He should perhaps go for the near post, but the Australian goes for the opposite side and fires over. He had a free run to get on the end of that!
74'

Triple change

Fresh legs and fresh ideas for Pauli, at a stage when Hoffenheim are looking really threatening.
72'

Free header!

Huge chance for substitute Toure, who heads a Kramarić cross wide with his first touch. Massive let-off for the home side.
69'

Alert goalkeeping

Tabaković and Bülter make a nuisance of themselves as a dangerous cross sails into the penalty area. Bülter tries to touch it goalwards, but Vasilj is out quickly to clear.

Decent showing from Pauli, but Hoffenheim's attack has been very tame so far...

Close!

Changes for Hoffenheim, but same old Pauli as Sinani's corner finds Irvine. The Australian turns it goalwards, only to see Baumann brilliantly adjust his body and bat it clear in front of his goal-line.
56'

Saved!

Partial redemption for Baumann, who dives full stretch to claw away Smith's free-kick. The hosts have their tails up...
51'

What a gift!

Baumann plays Bischoff into danger, with Treu picking off the errant pass. He proceeds to dink the ball over Hoffenheim's stricken goalkeeper, before playing in Weißhaupt for a routine finish from close range.

No changes

Under way again in Hamburg. Will we see some star dust in the second half?
Coup d’envoi!

Half-time. Pauli 0-0 Hoffenheim

No goals at the break and that’s probably a fair reflection of the game so far. Chances have been few and far between but the home side have had the better of them, with presentable openings for Irvine, Sinani and Van der Heyden. There’s been very little to see from Hoffenheim in the final third.
Mi-temps
44'

Glorious chance

Bischof curls the free-kick into the box but it evades everyone as it bounces across the six-yard box. It only needed a touch there.
43'

Promising position

Some lovely skill and quick feet from Becker wide on the right and he draws a foul, giving Hoffenheim a free-kick...
41'

Moment of magic?

With defences on top here and chances at a premium, you get the sense that this match could be decided by a flash of individual brilliance.
38'

Sinani has a go

A long throw from Treu causes havoc in the Hoffenheim box and the ball eventually falls to Sinani, whose shot on the turn is blocked.
33'

Pauli shading it

The hosts have had more efforts on goal so far, and they've been decent ones too. With a league-low 19 goals scored this term, clinical finishing has been a long-standing issue for Blessin's side in 2024/25.

Great chance for Van der Heyden!

An in-swinging corner fizzes across the six-yard box to find Van der Heyden at the back post. He gets to the ball just ahead of Kadeřábek but can only steer his header wide of thepost.
27'

Sinani!

The Pauli midfielder is given time and space to line up a shot around 25 yards out, but his powerful left-footed strike is well saved by Baumann.

Saad down

The forward is receiving treatment following a challenge with Bischof but looks ok to continue shortly.

The two chances for Irvine have Pauli leading the way in terms of expected goals (xG) in a game that has otherwise lacked goalmouth action.

Scrappy

The last couple of minutes have largely taken place in a congested midfield. Possession is swapping sides every couple of seconds, with neither side able to assert any dominance as yet.
camera-photo

Nothing in it

Hoffenheim's Bayern-bound midfielder Tom Bischof (l.) tussles for possession early on.
13'

Defensive wall

It's easy to see why Pauli have one of the best defensive records in the Bundesliga this season. Whenever they lose the ball they quickly get back in numbers and pack the middle of the pitch, leaving very little space for their opponents to work in.
10'

Almost in

Hoffenheim's press again causes Pauli problems at the back as they give away possession to Kramarić on the edge of the box. Fortunately from a Pauli perspective, they have plenty of defenders back to snuff out any danger.
7'

Irvine!

Another well-timed run into the box from Irvine, this time to meet a cross from the right, but his header lacks power and is straight at Baumann.
7'

On top

No real danger at either end of the pitch as yet but Pauli have had more of the ball.

5'

Over from Irvine!

The Pauli captain times his run perfectly to connect with a corner but it loops off Bischof and over the bar.
3'

Visitors pressing

Hoffenheim, kitted out in a fluorescent yellowy-green kit from head to toe, are pressing the home side high in their own half, trying to force mistakes. They've done so once or twice but haven't managed to capitalise on them.
2'

Promising move

Saad chases a long ball forward down the left, retains possession well and finds Sinani. His attempted ball over the defence has too much on it though and it runs out of play.

Peeeeep!

Here we go as Hoffenheim get the ball rolling on Matchday 26.
Coup d’envoi!

Two changes for Pauli

The hosts have largely stuck with the same 11 players that drew 1-1 with Wolfsburg last time out. Saliakas replaces Ritzka in midfield and Saad comes in for Afolayan in an otherwise unchanged team.

More on those teams

Hoffenheim coach Christian Ilzer has made wholesale changes to his team following last week's 1-1 draw with Heidenheim. In come Akpoguma, Jurásek, Tohumcu and Stach; Tabaković and Gendrey drop to the bench, while Chaves and Samassékou are not included.

Alexander Blessin's view on Hoffenheim

"Pellegrino Matarazzo was still in charge in the reverse fixture. He had a different philosophy compared with Christian Ilzer, who we know from Sturm Graz with lots of different elements in the way his teams press and counter-press. They struggled to find a structure in the beginning, but appear to have found their feet now. They look very stable now and have picked up some points. They've almost played their way out of trouble with some impressive performances, but we're aiming to put them back there."
camera-photo

Christian Ilzer's view on Pauli

"We can certainly expect an atmospheric game against a team that defend really well. St Pauli keep a very compact shape. We have to be wide awake and deliver a good, cohesive team performance on the pitch. Every game points the way forward. We've developed a good feeling in the last few away games."

The curious case of St. Pauli

Despite languishing near the bottom of the table, Alexander Blessin's side have the joint third best defence in the league with just 30 goals conceded, tied with Bayer Leverkusen and behind only Bayern Munich and Mainz. They have only managed to score 19 goals at the other end, however.

Tight at the bottom

A win would be crucial for either side, more so St. Pauli, who sit just two points above Bochum in the relegation playoff spot. Hoffenheim are six clear of Bochum and are unbeaten in their last four games. Pauli meanwhile, are winless in six.
