Darmstadt found their way back into the match almost immediately, however, and equalised on the stroke of half-time. In the second period, the Lilies pushed hard but failed to convert several clear-cut chances. Schalke increasingly dropped back and focused on securing a point, which they achieved via good defending and a little bit of luck.

Last season, he secured a 2-0 home win with a brace and smashed a hat-trick away as Darmstadt came back from 3-0 down to win 5-3 - the only time they have ever overturned a three-goal deficit to win a match!
