Eintracht Braunschweig 1-1 Holstein Kiel

A deserved draw. Kiel noticeably ran out of steam during the second half after their midweek DFB Cup heroics. Braunschweig coped well after the second red card saw the teams levelled to 10 v 10. They had slightly more of the game and could have easily snatched a home win.

Rough and tumble

This has not been a classic advertisement for the beautiful game. Instead, it's a hard-fought match, if you are being charitable about it, with plenty of fouls from both sides disrupting the flow.

Yellow card for Schwab

The Kiel veteran brings down Marie and is rightly shown the yellow card. Skrzybski then comes on to complete his comeback.

A chance to win it!

First Conteh fires a shot towards goal from the left-hand side, which the Kiel keeper saves. As Eintracht stay on the attack, the ball comes back to Conteh. From the left byline, he passes it low into the middle, and Heußer puts it over the bar from close range!
83'

Tough tangle

There's a duel on the touchline between Yardımcı and Komenda. Both go for the ball, and the Braunschweig player is fortunate not to see his second yellow card.
81'

Another substitution

Kiel attacker Knudsen makes way for Wagner.
77'

First booking for Braunschweig

Therkelsen wants to make ground in midfield. Yardımcı holds him back and receives the first yellow card for Braunschweig - despite them already seeing a red card.
76'

Corner kick

Schwab chips the ball from the right into the penalty area, but it goes past everyone. That's not good enough from Kiel.
75'

Great counter-attack

Even though Rapp is now marking Ivezić on the right side of defence, Conteh is making life difficult for the Kiel players. His cross into the middle to Yardımcı is good, but the striker's shot is blocked.
72'

All Eintracht

In the second half, Braunschweig have hit eight shots on goal, while Kiel haven't created a single one.
71'

Backhaus also makes a substitution

Aydin cannot continue after a challenge - so the second goalscorer also leaves the field for Sané .
69'

Substitution for Kiel

Niehoff has done well but is now replaced by a defender, Nekic.
68'

Another yellow

Therkelsen also sees a yellow card for pulling Gómez down just outside the penalty area.
66'

Lacking precision

Eintracht definitely have the better chances. They just aren't getting enough shots on target against Kiel.

Conteh charges again

Conteh is trying to seize this game by the scruff of the neck. On the left, he plays in Heußer, whose shot in the penalty area hits Zec on the arm, but from such a short distance it's clear that no foul will be called.
59'

Conteh with the chance!

An almost dreamlike solo run from the Braunschweig player. He cuts in from the left into the penalty area, leaving three Kiel players for dead. In the end, Krumrey manages to get his foot to it and saves the shot from close range.
58'

Kiel more alert

The Storks are proving to be quicker and better at winning the ball back immediately after losing possession. They are almost ten seconds faster.

Koa from distance

Who will cope better with the ten-versus-ten situation? Braunschweig try their luck from outside the box with their advanced centre-back. However, his shot flies well over the Kiel goal.

Ten v ten!

On the right touchline, there's a clash between Conteh and Rosenboom. The Kiel player catches the Braunschweig player in the face with his arm and consequently receives his second yellow.

Corner

Niehoff wins a corner on the left, then takes it with his right foot towards the goal. But Zec goes in too hard against Breunig, and it is a free kick for Eintracht.

Double substitution for Holstein

Marcel Rapp makes two changes at half-time. Therkelsen comes on for the cautioned Tolkin, while Schwab also replaces Davidsen.

Half-time: Braunschweig 1-1 Holstein Kiel

It has been an intense match with several goal-scoring opportunities and a strike at either end. Despite their man advantage, this won't be a walk in the park for Kiel.

Kiel keep going

The Storks are now well on top and threaten with cross from the right. Again Niehoff gets to the ball, but his header goes straight to Hoffmann.

Niehoff nets!

There's the equaliser. Ivezić crosses from the right into the penalty area, where Niehoff meets the ball at an awkward height and slots it with his right foot into the far corner. Hoffmann has no chance against the well-placed volley.

Plenty of stoppage time

Ten minutes are added on.

Frenkert sent off

Kaprálik receives the ball on the right, and he rushes past Frenkert. The Eintracht defender slides in and brings down the Kiel player, and referee Weisbach pulls out the red card. A big blow for Eintracht, who argue Kaprálik wasn't heading directly towards goal.
42'

Davidsen from distance!

Kiel's midfielder receives a back pass and shoots with his right foot from about 20 metres. But Raebiger throws himself into the shot and the ball goes just over the crossbar.
39'

Cross from Aydin

Some sings of attacking life from the home side at last. Conteh lays it off to Aydin, who has plenty of space. His delivery into the middle is looking for Yardımcı, but finds only Tolkin's head and Kiel can clear.
38'

Harres out on a limb

Harres has only been on the ball five times and is visibly struggling.
36'

Another yellow card

Braunschweig tries to attack down the left with Aydin. He gets blocked by Rosenboom on the halfway line.
34'

The final pass is missing

The Storks have combined well at times to get into the Braunschweig half - but they have struggled to create anything as either the through ball is missing or Harres and Kaprálik can't control it.
31'

Braunschweig applying pressure

After taking the lead, the hosts are by no means sitting back. Led by Yardımcı, they are putting early pressure on Kiel.

Was there some frustration involved? On the left wing, the Kiel defender is late against Gómez. This results not only in a free kick from a good position, but also a yellow card.

Ice-cold Aydin!

Penalty

After a throw-in from Gómez towards Koa, Tolkin jumps high and clearly touches the ball with his hand. That had to be given.
21'

Free kick

Now Kiel combines well going forward, drawing a free kick on the left touchline. Tolkin delivers the ball to the near post, Ivezić tries with his left foot and the ball flies just narrowly past the far post.
18'

Passing far from perfect

Both teams are still struggling with ball control. Even though the passes are often coming off in their own half, the ball is frequently lost in the opponent's half.

Attacking down the wings

It's clear how Braunschweig want to break down Kiel: Conteh on the left and Gómez on the right are repeatedly making runs in behind - but the hosts haven't had any efforts yet.
13'

Kiel with only one defensive midfielder

Contrary to initial assumptions, the Storks are playing with only Knudsen in defensive midfield. Niehoff and Davidsen are positioned slightly further forward.
11'

Eintracht eager to take control

After the interruption, the home side want to dominate the match. They attack down the right with Yardımcı, who crosses to the far post. Aydin takes the ball on the volley, but the flag goes up immediately as Yardımcı was already offside before the cross.

Chance for Niehoff

Kiel make two changes after the dramatic DFB Cup penalty triumph against Hamburg in midweek. Krumrey is back in goal, and Niehoff starts in place of Therkelsen. It is only Niehoff's second start in 2025/26, with the first coming on Matchday 2 (a 0-2 defeat against Bielefeld).
camera-photo

Only one change for Braunschweig

After their recent victory against Kaiserslautern (2-0), there is little reason for Eintracht to shuffle the pack, with Aydin replacing Flick in the only change to the starting XI. They therefore line up in the same way they started the second half last week.
camera-photo

Heiner Backhaus on facing Kiel

"Because we won the last match, the mood in the team is naturally very good. However, it's important not to get carried away after a victory. One swallow doesn't make a summer."
camera-photo

Marcel Rapp on facing Braunschweig

"It's not as if we danced a conga line on the bus from Hamburg to Kiel. We're taking the energy with us, but we know that it's about points again now, of which we currently have too few."

Solid recent record

Kiel are unbeaten on their last four trips to Eintracht (W2, D2), keeping three clean sheets across those games.

Recent history

Braunschweig won the last encounter 2-1 in January 2024. Prior to that, Kiel had celebrated four consecutive victories against Eintracht.
