Full-time: Braunschweig 1-5 Hertha

From the start, Hertha showed that they wanted to be the dominant team, putting Braunschweig under early pressure. After Reese's early goal, Braunschweig found their way into the game better, but were punished ruthlessly for not converting their chances well, and so the Berliners increased their lead to 3-0 within two minutes before the break. After the interval, the game proceeded similarly, with Hertha getting increasingly dangerous on the counter-attack as time went on. Reese used one of these to make it 4-0, but that wasn't the final score. In stoppage time, Tempelmann first scored a consolation goal for Braunschweig, then substitute Winkler increased it to 5-1 from the visitors' perspective, who played themselves into a goal frenzy today and deservedly won.

What's going on here?

Hertha apparently didn't take that lying down - just two minutes later, Winkler restores the four-goal advantage, slotting home from a central position into the bottom right corner, with Hoffmann only able to watch it go in.

The consolation goal!

After a corner from the left, the ball slips through to Tempelmann, who has time to control it and then coolly slots it into the right corner with his right foot. A lovely goal, but unfortunately - from the home side's perspective - too late.

Record victory for the Berliners?

For Hertha, the 4-0 would be their biggest victory of the season surpassing their previous record: a 3-1 win on three separate occasions.

Five minutes to go

Dräger is also allowed to get some minutes under his belt, Kaufmann leaves the pitch.

Offside!

First, Scherhant is denied by Hoffmann, then by the right post, from which the ball bounces to Reese, who shoots from the left side of the penalty area and finds the top left corner in spectacular fashion. However, the referee immediately blows the whistle because Scherhant was already offside when receiving the ball. The VAR confirms this decision.

Hertha come again

In the final minutes, the visitors dropped off a bit, but now Scherhant finds a gap on the left side. Having reached the penalty area, he tries from close range, but Hoffmann is there to make the save.
77'

Deservedly ahead

Hertha's shots on goal are now into the double digits, while the home side has only one. Eintracht have missed the target eight times, which shows that they haven't been composed enough in front of the opponent's goal today.

Brace hero Reese

The attacking player scored his third brace in the Bundesliga 2. He last netted twice in a match on Matchday 22 of the 2023/24 season during the 3-2 home victory against Magdeburg.
72'

Too harmless

Braunschweig simply can't manage to create any dangerous chances in front of the opposition's goal today. Shortly before the conceding their fourth, Köhler played a chipped pass to Philippe, who, surrounded by four Berlin players, could do little with the ball.
69'

The decisive moment!

The next Hertha counter-attack wave rolls in. With just two passes, the ball ends up in the hosts' net. Scherhant spots Reese sprinting forward on the left this time and serves a low ball through the entire Braunschweig half. Reese then has plenty of time to pick his corner - he opts for the right one, elegantly chipping it in.

Double substitution

Eintracht coach Scherning makes two changes, Bell Bell and Ehlers enter the fray.

Hoffmann misjudges it

Once again, Eintracht's keeper rushes out of his box, but this time Scherhant is quicker to the ball and cleverly chips it over the goalkeeper. However, due to the acute angle, Hertha's attacking player can't direct the ball towards the goal.
59'

Tachie!

Immediately on the counter-attack, the substitute Tachie tries his luck from in off the left flank. His curling effort whistles just wide of the right post.

Cleared off the line!

Cuisance rounds Hoffmann and drives the ball low towards the goal from a tight angle. Two Braunschweig players come rushing in and just manage to clear it. The ball had almost rolled over the line!
56'

Hoffmann alert

Meanwhile, Braunschweig's keeper Hoffmann spots Hertha's threat quickly - after a sprint out of his box, the goalkeeper is the quickest to reach a ball played into the right channel.
54'

Dárdai sees yellow

And quite rightly so. He attempts to nick the ball from Köhler with a sliding tackle, but catches the Braunschweig player instead.

With his goal to make it 2-0, Scherhant ended his run of seven matches without scoring.

Half-time: Braunschweig 0-3 Hertha

Hertha started like a house on fire and took an early lead. The visitors remained the more dangerous team, while Braunschweig repeatedly found good spaces but could hardly create any chances. Shortly before the break, Hertha doubled their lead through Scherhant before adding a third through Nikolaou's own goal. This is certainly not a good position for the home side to be in going into the second half.

Own goal! Bitter for Braunschweig!

Immediately after kick-off, the Berliners get the ball and make it dangerous down the left side this time. Scherhant plays the ball low into the six-yard box, where Cuisance is ready to shoot, but Braunschweig's Nikolaou gets to the ball before him and inadvertently pushes it over the line.

Hertha double their lead!

This time, it pays off for Reese to chase down a ball on his right side. After a short dribble, he plays a silky smooth low pass into the centre to Michaël Cuisance, who fakes out two more Braunschweig players beside the keeper. Instead of shooting, he passes to Scherhant, who turns and slots it in with ease.

Rare half-time lead?

For Hertha, it would be the first half-time lead since Matchday 22. Back then, in Düsseldorf, they lost the match 2-1 after being 1-0 up at the break.
39'

Unsuccessful through ball

Tempelmann tries to set up Philippe, but his low pass is too long. This allows Hertha to start their build-up play again.
37'

Increasingly balanced

In the last few minutes, the possession statistics have become more and more even, but Braunschweig are still not making enough of their increased time on the ball.

Hertha's solid defence

Eintracht repeatedly create good space for themselves. This time Philippe tries to switch play with a header to the left side. Once again, however, the pass is blocked.
32'

Danger!

Philippe tries a low shot from the right-half position, which Leistner blocks. Then keeper Ernst dives on the ball. However, there was almost a serious misunderstanding between Leistner and Ernst, but Szabó recognises this too late and can't reach the ball.
30'

Peeep!

Once again, Reese chases down a ball on the right side, but at the moment Gechter played the pass, the goalscorer was stood in an offside position.

Reese finds a way through

Three Braunschweig defenders are not enough to stop the Hertha striker from smashing the ball under the crossbar.
26'

Hertha more dangerous so far

The shot count now stands at 3-0 in favour of the visitors. Eintracht do manage to push forward occasionally, but they can't convert these advances into dangerous opportunities. Even a recent corner from the left yielded nothing.

Clever pass

With the outside of his right foot, Maza curls the ball low through several Braunschweig players to the right flank, where Reese is once again positioned. From a tight angle, he tries to get the ball on target, but Hoffmann is alert to it.
21'

Double chance for Hertha

Maza also tries from a bit further out, forcing Braunschweig's goalkeeper Hoffmann to parry the ball forward at full stretch. Scherhant comes rushing in and attempts to chip the ball over the keeper, but ends up lobbing it over the crossbar as well.
20'

Why not?

Tempelmann tries his luck from over 30 yards out. His shot would've looked promising, if it weren't for a Berlin leg getting in the way.
18'

Brief interruption

Köhler has been caught in a challenge, but after a short spell on the ground play is now resuming.
13'

Still no shot on goal

Philippe tries to control a cross from the left with his chest, but he doesn't quite manage it. The ball rolls out for a goal kick. Once again, Braunschweig fail to get a shot away, but they're currently putting more pressure on the visitors!
13'

Reese scores again

Hertha's offensive player scored his third goal of the season, all since Matchday 22 (having also scored last weekend against Schalke). The last three Hertha goals have all come from the 27-year-old.

Counter-attack moment

For the first time, Braunschweig manage to relieve pressure. Philippe is the one who quickly moves forward after winning the ball, but he's also the one who loses possession to a Hertha player in the penalty area.
3'

Too elaborate

Zeefuik is sent through to the front, arriving at the byline he cleverly lays it back to the onrushing Cuisance, who wants to lay it off again to Scherhant. A shot would have probably been the better option, as the delay allows Eintracht to block.

End of rotation?

It's the first time since Matchday 9 that Braunschweig have put out the starting XI for two consecutive games.

One change for Hertha

Stefan Leitl makes one change from the 2-1 home defeat against Schalke as Scherhant plays in place of Schuler, who drops to the bench.

Hosts unchanged

Daniel Scherning sends out the same team that began in the 1-1 draw in Hannover last matchday.

Hertha starting XI

Ernst - Gechter, Leistner, M. Dárdai - Kenny, Cuisance, Klemens, Zeefuik - Maza - Scherhant, Reese

Braunschweig starting XI

Hoffmann - Ivanov, Bičakčić, Nikolaou - Kaufmann, Baas, Köhler, Di Michele Sanchez - Philippe, Tempelmann - Szabó

Stefan Leitl's view on Eintracht

"I expect my team to perform similarly to how they did against Schalke. We did many things well, we implemented many things well. If we manage to push the ball over the line in the end, it would look very good."

Daniel Scherning's view on Hertha

"With Cuisance, Maza and Reese, they have exceptional players in their ranks who could easily play in the Bundesliga next year. We are prepared for their individual quality, which we will have to counter with our team unity and a collective performance."

Spectacular cup encounters

Eintracht have celebrated several DFB Cup successes against Hertha, with the last two meetings particularly spectacular. In July 2022 (4-4, 10-9 after penalties) and in September 2020 (5-4), there were wild goal fests at Hamburger Straße with a total of 17 goals, with second-division Braunschweig prevailing against top-flight Hertha on both occasions.

It's been a while

Braunschweig's last competitive victory against the Berliners was a 2-1 home win in Bundesliga 2 in October 1991 under manager Werner Fuchs; Holger Aden scored the winning goal, while Mario Basler was on the pitch for the Berlin side.

Advantage Hertha?

Hertha have not lost any of their last nine league matches against Braunschweig (six wins, three draws).
camera-photo

Flashback

In the reverse fixture on 18 October 2024, Hertha turned around a deficit with a numerical advantage (red card for Lennart Grill in the 50th minute) through two penalties and celebrated their last home victory to date with a 3-1 win.
