A comfortable win for Spain, thanks to Oyzarzabal’s double and a powerful Porro header. It could have been far more given the amount of chances they created, but the result is all that counts and La Roja advance to the last 16. Austria played well, in the first half in particular, but just lacked that bit of quality and incision in the final third.

La Roja are in front and have been the better team so far. Yamal has been relentless down the right, causing Laimer headache after headache, but it's Oyarzabal's third goal of the tournament that is the difference at the break. Austria aren't done yet though; they've shown enough glimpses going forward to give themselves hope going into the second half.

Schlager keeps Austria in it - twice!

Two fine saves in quick succession from the Austria goalkeeper! First he denies Yamal, who squeezed past Laimer on the right, got to the byline and got a shot away from an acute angle. Spain regain possession on the rebound and work it to Oyarzabal, who creates space for a left-footed shot that Schlager does brilliantly to keep it out.

From the resulting corner, Cucurella smashes the ball into the net from close range, but it won't count as there was a foul on the goalkeeper in the build-up.

Olmo with an exceptional piece of skill, dragging the ball on the turn through Danso's legs. For a moment he looks to be in on goal until Posch slides in to smash it clear for a corner.

Sabitzer floats an inviting cross into the Spain box from the left. It looks perfect for Gregoritsch, but he mistimes his jump and can't quite make a connection. That could have been the opening goal there.

Yamal, wide on the Spain right, jinks his way forward and gets past Laimer for pace. He appears to be shoved over by the Bayern man, and there are loud appeals for a penalty, but the referee waves for play to continue.

Spain have had those couple of early glimpses, but Austria are not simply sitting back. They've already got forward well, particularly down the left via Sabitzer, but haven't troubled Spain in the penalty area yet.

Yamal causing trouble

Baena has space on the left but Yamal's pass is too slow, forcing his team-mate to check his run. Yamal doesn't give up though, and after receiving the ball again, darts into the box and tries to cross, but it's blocked for a corner.

Yamal robs Seiwald of the ball just outside the Spain penalty box and then leads the charge forward. He finds Oyarzabal out to his left before receiving the return pass and shooting from distance, but it lacks power and is straight at the goalkeeper.

Grimaldo departs Leverkusen

Alejandro Grimaldo, part of Leverkusen's historic title-winning squad in 2023/24, has departed the BayArena for his native Spain and Atlético Madrid. He ultimately made 145 appearances across all competitions for the club, scoring 30 goals, and also lifted the DFB Cup during his time in Leverkusen. Part of Spain's squad for this tournament, he is yet to feature.

Two of those players have found the back of the net for their country at this summer's tournament. Schmid struck in the 3-1 win over Jordan, while Sabitzer scored during the 3-3 draw with Algeria.

Ralf Rangnick’s team kicked off their campaign with a 3-1 win over Jordan, but a 2-0 defeat to a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina left their round of 32 hopes hanging in the balance. They were heading out when Riyad Mahrez put Algeria 3-2 ahead in the 93rd minute of their final Group J fixture, but former VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt striker Saša Kalajdžić equalised three minutes later to send Austria through as runners-up.

How they got here: Spain

Spain are one of only two teams yet to concede a goal at this summer’s tournament. The 2010 winners were held to a frustrating goalless draw by minnows Cape Verde in their opening game but responded in style, beating Saudi Arabia 4-0 before confirming their place as Group H winners with a 1-0 success over Uruguay.
