Svanberg caps big Swedish win

Wolfsburg's Mattias Svanberg (r.) scored Sweden's fourth goal just 18 seconds after coming off the bench in their opening 5-1 victory over Tunisia in Monterrey. Yasin Ayari got the first and fifth, while former Borussia Dortmund and St. Pauli strikers Alexander Isak (l.) and Viktor Gyökeres also netted for Graham Potter's men. Hertha Berlin youth product Omar Rekik had brought it back to 2-1 for Tunisia, who started captain Ellyes Skhiri (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Rani Khedira (Union Berlin) in midfield. Ismaël Gharbi (Augsburg) replaced the latter in the closing minutes. Dortmund's Daniel Svensson came on in added time for Holstein Kiel's Alexander Bernhardsson as the Swedes take early pole position in Group F.

How they got here: Sweden

Sweden endured a calamitous Group B qualifying campaign in Europe, finishing bottom of their section without a win (two draws, four defeats). However, they snuck through to the play-offs via their UEFA Nations League ranking, and eventually came good, beating Ukraine 3-1 and then Poland 3-2 to clinch their spot at this tournament.

How they got here: Tunisia

The Eagles of Carthage breezed through CAF Group H qualifying, winning nine of their ten games (drawing the other) to top their section and earn an automatic spot at the global showdown. They scored 22 goals in the process didn't concede once.

Bundesliga involvement

There are a number of players in both camps who earn their crust in Germany. The most well-known of them in the Swedish contingent is Borussia Dortmund's Daniel Svensson (pictured), but Alexander Bernhardsson (Holstein Kiel), Eric Smith (St. Pauli) and Mattias Svanberg (Wolfsburg) also live and work there. For Tunisia, Rani Khedira (Union Berlin) and Ellyes Skhiri (Eintracht Frankfurt) could fill the central midfield positions, while Ismaël Gharbi (Augsburg) and Elias Saad (Hannover) are also in the squad.
