Match reaction: Progress 'in Bayern's hands'

Kane hopeful of making home advantage count

"We fought and we clawed and we're back in the tie," the Bayern No.9 told Amazon Prime after the highest-scoring Champions League semi-final in history. "You will always feel there are areas to improve on. We go to the Allianz with nothing to lose, we're at our best when we're intense and physical. It'll be who takes their moments next week, with the crowd behind us, we hope that can push us over the line."

Full time: PSG 5-4 Bayern

A truly astonishing game, without doubt one of the best ever in the competition. At one point it looked like Bayern were down and out when PSG went 5-2 up early in the second half, with two quickfire goals, but the visitors fought back and also scored twice in quick succession themselves, reducing the deficit to 5-4. With just one goal in it, all is still very much to play for in the second leg in Munich next Wednesday.

Off the line!

Bayern have one last corner, which PSG struggle to clear. Safonov is off his line and Kimmich loops a header at goal. It's going in but Pacho is well placed to head clear!
90'
+ 2

Stanišić in space...

... after a lovely pass from Olise, but he opts to check back instead of crossing into the box. He finds Kimmich, who does cross, but it's now much more crowded and too close to Safonov, who collects again.
90'
+ 1

Kane tries one

The striker lines up a shot from outside the box but he doesn't make a clean connection under pressure, and it's a simple save for Safonov.
87'

Crossbar!

We very nearly had our answer there! Vitinha drives forward down the PSG left before slipping a pass in for Mayulu, whose first-time shot crashes off the bar with Neuer beaten!
86'

One final twist?

Will Bayern manage to level the score to begin the second leg in Munich effectively at 0-0? Or will PSG break through again to extend their lead?
84'

Tiring legs

Bayern have been the better side in the last few minutes, with Mendes seen complaining about cramp. He's replaced by former Bayern left-back Hernández, while the visiting backline will be relieved to also see Kvaratskhelia go off.
83'

Misunderstanding

Pavlović does really well to win possession in midfield from the press. He slides it out to Olise, who is quickly crowded out, but he dinks a pass over the defence towards the back post, assuming Goretzka will make the run - but they're not on the same wavelength and the chance goes begging.
80'

Yellow card

79'

Aerial threat?

Musiala is taken off for Goretzka as Bayern perhaps change tactics for the final 10 minutes or so.
77'

Olise has a go

Kane is heavily involved as Bayern push for an equaliser. It's worked to Olise on the right via Kimmich. He gets past Mendes again but is blocked by Ruíz.
77'

Yellow card

75'

Tah goes close

Olise loops a high corner from the right towards the back post, aiming for Tah but Hakimi gets there first and nudges it out for another corner.
camera-photo

Appreciation for the assist

Díaz gives Kane the thumbs up for his sumptuous pass that led to Bayern's fourth goal.
camera-photo

Incredible!

Having been 5-2 down at one point, it's now 5-4! Kane plays an exquisite pass over Marquinhos for Díaz to chase. He brings it down superbly, tricks Marquinhos and hammers the ball in at the far post. Amazing!

camera-photo

Stick or twist?

Aaron Danks, Kompany's assistant, is the man in the dugout hotseat for Bayern here. What does he have planned for the final 20 minutes?
camera-photo

What next for Bayern?

Head coach Kompany, in the stands instead of on the touchline here due to suspension, will be pondering how his side can get back in this one.
65'

Back in it!

Kimmich curls the free-kick into the box and Upamecano gets behind Pacho to glance a header in at the back post!
64'

Free-kick for Bayern

Díaz is fouled about 35 yards out. Can Kompany's side pull one back here?
63'

Quick feet from Díaz

The Colombian jinks into the PSG box and dances past two defenders, but Safonov comes off his line to smother before he can get a shot away.
camera-photo

The decider?

There appears to be little danger as Doué charges forward. He only has Dembélé for support, but there are four Bayern defenders covering. Yet somehow, Dembélé cuts in from the left and smashes a shot in off the near post.
camera-photo

Kvaratskhelia again!

Hakimi scampers into space down the Bayern right and crosses into the box. At first it looks like his ball has evaded everyone, but Kvaratskhelia is arriving at the back post to drill it past Neuer.
54'

Bayern almost in!

Díaz jinks down the left and slips a pass in for Laimer, whose first-time shot from a tight angle flies wide of the post.
53'

Laimer adding bite

The full-back, who is playing on the left, is forcing the PSG players into errors with his relentless and aggressive pressing and harrying.
50'

Almost an opening for Díaz

Kane chests the ball down brilliantly and feeds Díaz to his left. He jinks past Marquinhos but Neves gets back to nick it off his toe.
48'

Still frenetic

There's been no dip in the pace of the game, both sets of players are still going gung-ho.
46'

Peeeeep!

Bayern get the ball rolling again, with Laimer replacing Davies for the second half.
Kick-off!
camera-photo

Half-time: PSG 3-2 Bayern

A breathless first half comes to an end and what a treat it was. End-to-end action with top-class players performing at the highest level. That penalty on the stroke of half-time will give the home side a psychological advantage, but you get the sense there are more goals to come.

Dembélé smashes the ball into the net. Neuer dives the right way, to his left, but the shot has too much power for him to keep out.

Penalty to PSG!

The referee awards a spot-kick to the home side for a handball against Davies. He had initially waved for play to continue but reversed his decision following a VAR review and consulting the pitch-side monitor.
camera-photo

Wow!

Sensational, yet again, from Olise. Receiving possession in a central position about 25 yards from goal, Olise drives forward, drawing four defenders towards him, before unleashing a rasping shot into the top corner to level the score once again!
39'

Brilliant from Stanišić!

The Bayern right-back does superbly to track Kvaratskhelia's run and nick the ball off his toe. He charges forward himself and, after receiving a pas from Olise, suddenly finds himself with space in the PSG box. His touch is slightly too heavy though, allowing Pacho to recover and tackle.
38'

Blink and you miss it!

Doué has another chance as PSG look to pick Bayern off on the counter. He shoots well from just inside the box but it rolls just wide of the far post.
37'

Chance for Bayern!

Kompany's men get forward in numbers, with Díaz getting past his marker with ease. He cuts it back to Musiala, who could shoot, but instead he tries to flick it on to Olise - only for a PSG defender to intercept.
35'

Upamecano to the rescue

Bayern have to be careful here as PSG can smell blood. Once again, Dembélé is sent behind the Bayern defence and bears down on goal. Upamecano sprints back and manages a last-ditch block on his compatriot's shot.
camera-photo

Turnaround!

Almost instantly, PSG go close themselves as Doué darts into the Bayern box and his low shot deflects off Tah and out for a corner. Dembélé takes it, with Neves getting the better of Musiala to glance a header into the far corner!
32'

Sublime from Olise

The France winger is unstoppable down the right, first shimmying past Mendes before brushing past Marquinhos and to the byline. His cross hits a PSG defender and crashes off the post before the home side hook it clear!
29'

Neuer gathers

Hakimi gets forward down the right and bends a low cross into the box looking for Dembéle, who's darting to and fro trying to find a pocket of space. Neuer watches it all the way though, and comfortably scoops it up.
camera-photo

PSG equalise!

Doué plays a brilliant ball forward down the left, over the head of Stanišić for Kvaratskhelia to run onto. He gets into the box, cuts inside and smashes an unstoppable shot into the far corner.
23'

HUGE let-off for Bayern!

Bayern give the ball away cheaply in midfield and Vitinha instantly plays the ball forward for Dembélé to chase. He's all on his own with just Neuer to beat, but his attempted curler towards the far post is well off target, and Bayern breather a sight of relief.
23'

Kane loses a boot

Dropping deep inside his own half to collect the ball, he's fouled by Pacho and loses his right boot in the process. He's fine to continue though.
20'

Almost a second!

Kane slides a pass into the feet of Olise as he charges into the box. He only has the goalkeeper to beat but Safonov makes a superb save to slow it down. The ball keeps rolling towards goal though, but Marquinhos darts back to clear it off the line.
camera-photo

Bayern lead!

A couple of deep breaths and then Kane runs up and side-foots the ball to the goalkeeper's left, sending Safonov the wrong way.

15'

Davies to the rescue!

A first real opening for the home side as they attack at pace, working the ball from right to left. Kvaratskhelia is behind the defence for the first time but his cross into the middle is headed clear by Davies!
14'

Kimmich goes direct

The Bayern midfielder whips a corner from the left at goal, aiming to dip it in at the far post, but Safonov just manages to paw it clear.

11'

Free-kick for Bayern

Zaïre-Emery brings down Kane in a central position, about 40 yards from goal. Kimmich is standing over it...
camera-photo

Fast start

Davies has been heavily involved early on for Bayern and has shown some tidy touches so far.
6'

First glimpse of Olise

The winger scampers past Nuno Mendes on the outside and crosses into the middle with his weaker right foot. Goalkeeper Safonov is alert and dives off his line to smother though.
5'

Dembélé surges

The PSG attacker tries to dribble his way into the Bayern box but a combination of Davies and Musiala crowds him out.
3'

Speed demons

It's becoming clear to see why Davies was preferred at left-back for Bayern tonight: his pace should serve as a tonic to that of Hakimi down PSG's right.

PSG get the ball rolling and immediately ping the ball out of play near the Bayern corner flag.

More on that PSG side

Luis Enrique also rotated heavily at the weekend, and likewise makes eight changes from the side that began the 3-0 victory at Angers on Saturday. Zaïre-Emery, Vitinha, João Neves, Doué, Dembéle (pictured), Kvaratskhelia are all starters here but were all either rested or began on the bench at the weekend, while Marquinhos replaces Zabarnyi at centre-back, and Nuno Mendes comes in for Lucas Hernández at left-back.
camera-photo

More on that Bayern team

VIncent Kompany has made eight changes to the side that began the wild 4-3 win in Mainz on Saturday, with only Luis Díaz, Pavlović and Davies (pictured) retaining their places. The latter begins at left-back, with Stanišić starting on the opposite flank, somewhat surprisingly leaving Laimer on the bench. Otherwise, all the big guns including Kane, Olise, Musiala, Kimmich and Neuer, are back to start.

Paris Saint-Germain team news

Luis Enrique should have the luxury of a full-strength squad to choose from, with the midfield boosted by the recent return of Fabián Ruiz from a knee injury, while Vitinha (pictured) appears to be over a heel injury that kept him out of the win over Angers at the weekend.

Bayern team news

Coman keen on encounter

Former Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern winger Kingsley Coman told the Bayern club website: "If there’s one team who have been on the same level as Bayern this year, it’s Paris Saint-Germain. I can’t say that one team is clearly better than the other. For football lovers it’s going to be a wonderful match: two of the best teams, who play attractive football with great intensity. These are the moments in which legends are born.”
camera-photo

Big night for deputy Danks

The less familiar figure of Englishman Aaron Danks will be in the Bayern dugout tonight due to Kompany's suspension. The former Middlesbrough, Aston Villa and Anderlecht assistant coach has been with Bayern since July 2024. “We will rise to this challenge and get the job done as a team,” said sporting director Christoph Freund on the situation.
camera-photo

Serge on board

Despite recently suffering an adductor injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season and this summer's World Cup, Bayern winger Serge Gnabry has travelled to France to support his team-mates. Kompany said: "He’s someone who brings the team together, including all the different cultures in the dressing room. It was his decision to come. We always welcome that.”
camera-photo

Kompany confident in his players

"We've already won at the Bernabéu this year and won in Paris. Paris are obviously still the Champions League holders, but if any team can take on this challenge, it's us. We know how good Paris are, but we want this game."
camera-photo

Dayot Upamecano's thoughts

"It's a big game for us. We're totally focused on our game. We obviously want to win here. PSG have great players and a super squad. But we're totally focused on our game and want to win[...] It'll be very tough. Ousmane [Dembélé] gets the ball all over the pitch. We've got a similar player in Harry [Kane]. They try to destabilise the opposition with lots of movement. We'll try to deal with that."
camera-photo

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the league phase defeat to Bayern

"I remember that match, we didn't play as well as them, but there were also injuries. In the second half, we showed that we were capable of anything and of beating them, but we didn't score the goals we needed."
camera-photo

Luis Enrique on facing Bayern

"If the teams attack very well, you have to know how to defend, so that will be key. We need to make the most of our attacks as best we can and we need to be clear on how to defend against this sort of team."
camera-photo

Vincent Kompany on facing PSG

"There's no magic solution. The advantage we have is that we’ve played each other many times. But that goes both ways. We know how to put the opposition under pressure. Paris have the ability to play in different positions on the pitch, but that won't catch us off guard. They've got a lot of quality in every area. But if you look at our team, we've got those qualities too."
camera-photo

Out for revenge

The last time Dayot Upamecano came up against PSG in a Champions League semi-final, his RB Leipzig team fell to a 3-0 defeat, a result he'd prefer to inflict on them this time around.
camera-photo

Sideline success

Kompany faced the Parisian side once as a player, in a 0-0 draw in the group stage of the 2008 UEFA Cup. He's had more success as a manager, winning two of his three encounters with them.

No Kompany

The Bayern boss' half-time team talk seemed to have a real impact at the weekend as the Bundesliga champions came back from 3-0 down to win 4-3 in Mainz, but the Belgian won't be on the touchline on Tuesday as he serves a suspension after picking up a third yellow card of the Champions League season last time out. He will still speak at Monday evening's pre-match press conference in Paris, Aaron Danks is set to direct the team on the sidelines at the Parc des Princes.

Guerreiro faces spell on sidelines

Bayern will be without Raphaël Guerreiro for the time being after the 32-year-old suffered a minor muscle injury in his left hamstring during the second half of Saturday's remarkable victory in Mainz. PSG - the story so far

PSG won the Champions League for the first time last season, but their title defence got off to a rocky start. After finishing 11th in the league phase, Luis Enrique's side had to go through the knockout phase play-offs, where they edged past league rivals Monaco 5-4 on aggregate. They've since made light work of English duo Chelsea (agg 8-2) and Liverpool (agg 4-0), but did lose to Bayern in the league phase back in November.

Bayern - the story so far

Bayern famously dispatched Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, winning 2-1 in Spain before shading a thrilling return fixture 4-3 at the Allianz Arena. Prior to that, the six-time European champions thumped Atalanta 10-2 on aggregate in the last 16, having finished second in the league phase behind Arsenal. A league-phase loss to the London club - who take on Atlético Madrid in the other semi-final tie - has been the only blot to their copybook.
