What will Nathaniel Brown bring to Bayern Munich - and where might he fit in?

In Nathaniel Brown, Bayern Munich have secured the services of one of the game’s most exciting young full-backs - but the 23-year-old is much more than just a glittering prospect.

Brown’s marauding displays for Eintracht Frankfurt in 2025/26 not only caught the eye of Bayern bosses Max Eberl and Vincent Kompany but also then-Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who named the Amberg native as his first-choice left-back at the FIFA World Cup 2026 over the summer.

If his recent performances for club and country are anything to go by, there is no reason why Brown cannot make that position his own in Munich next season - even if Kompany isn’t exactly short of options in that department.

When fit, Alphonso Davies remains one of the best attacking left-backs in the game. Unfortunately for the Canada international and Kompany, injuries have restricted him to just 32 Bundesliga appearances over the past two seasons - and a mere 13 since March 2025.

Kompany has rotated heavily at left-back in Davies’ absence, alternating between Raphaël Guerreiro, Konrad Laimer, Josip Stanišić, Hiroki Ito and Tom Bischof last season. Guerreiro, arguably the most natural replacement for Davies, has left Bayern this summer.

Stanišic and Ito have brought defensive stability to the role, while Laimer’s tireless work rate and energy has proved invaluable on both sides of Bayern’s back four. Bischof, too, has played a key role, ending the season with three goals in four league appearances.

However, none of the aforementioned quartet are natural left-backs. Stanišic is more comfortable on the right side of defence, while Ito is a central defender by trade. And despite Bischof’s excellent displays from left-back at the tail-end of last season, the youngster no doubt sees himself better-suited to a midfield role in the long term.

Which is where Brown comes in. His raw pace, quick feet and goal threat - he registered 10 goal involvements in 42 appearances across all competitions last term - make him a ready-made alternative to Davies, leaving Bayern with two outstanding attacking left-backs as they look to challenge on three fronts again in 2026/27.

The prospect of Brown linking up with Luiz Díaz, who contributed 26 goals and 23 assists in a phenomenal debut season in Germany, is a mouthwatering one for Bayern supporters, but such is Brown’s attacking threat that Kompany may be tempted to deploy him in Díaz’s position - if only to give the Colombian the occasional rest.

Brown started 10 Bundesliga games in a more advanced left wing-back role in 2025/26, with three of his four league assists last season coming from that position. No mean feat, given Frankfurt’s inconsistencies last campaign.

Over the course of the entire season, David Raum and Maximilian Mittelstädt were the only left-sided Bundesliga defenders (not including wing-backs) to create more clear-cut chances than Brown (seven). Raum and Mittelstädt, of course, were both playing for teams who finished the season in the top four.

Speaking of the UEFA Champions League, Brown was given his first taste of Europe’s premier club competition at Frankfurt last season - and he saved one of his best assists for one of the game’s grandest stages.

In the Eagles’ league-phase encounter with Barcelona, Brown dispossessed Blaugrana starlet Lamine Yamal inside his own half, carried the ball over the halfway line and threaded a superb pass through to Ansgar Knauff, who gave Frankfurt a surprise lead.

Eintracht ended up losing 2-1, but that passage of play offered a tantalising taste of what Brown might go on to achieve in a Bayern side who scored 122 goals in the Bundesliga alone last season.

Whether Kompany opts to use him at full-back, on the left wing or even as an emergency right-back, Brown’s stock is only going to rise.

Bayern fans can await the new season with bated breath.
