Relegation-threatened Werder Bremen and Hamburg braced for high-stakes Nordderby

With both sides still in jeopardy at the wrong end of the table, there is plenty riding on Werder Bremen's Nordderby meeting with Hamburg on Bundesliga Matchday 30. A win for either would significantly increase their chances of survival, while defeat could make it a nervy final few weeks of the campaign…

Hamburg are currently in the better position, six points clear of the relegation play-off position, but their recent form has seen them slip back into trouble after they looked to be steering clear of the battle for survival.

The 4-0 loss to VfB Stuttgart last time out means they have now won just one of their past seven games, which came directly after a run of five matches unbeaten. Scoring goals has not been an issue recently – that aforementioned defeat was only the second time in the last 10 games that HSV have failed to find the back of the net – but no clean sheet in nine is a worrying stat for head coach Merlin Polzin.

For this encounter, Polzin can at least call upon the returning Miro Muheim for additional creativity to complement standout star Fábio Vieira. The Arsenal loanee is the only HSV player to manage more Bundesliga assists than Muheim’s four this term and is one of the team’s leaders, even wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of official skipper Yussuf Poulsen.

That positive team news for Hamburg is in stark contrast to Bremen’s situation. Not only will they be without their captain, Marco Friedl, following his team’s defeat to Cologne last time out, but seven-goal top scorer Jens Stage may also be unavailable as he continues to fight back from a muscle problem.

The Danish midfielder has missed the last two games, with Bremen losing on both occasions - hardly the best preparation for Hamburg’s visit with the Werderaner just three points above St. Pauli, who currently occupy the relegation play-off spot.

The loss of Friedl is a huge blow. Last season, Bremen averaged 1.8 points per game with the Austrian in the side, and only 0.8 without him. This term, they have failed to win either of the two games he's missed.

Looking at the bigger picture, Bremen have now lost three of their previous four. While that in itself is not surprising given their predicament, defeats to fellow relegation rivals Cologne and Mainz have only increased the pressure on new head coach Daniel Thioune after back-to-back wins over Heidenheim and Union Berlin.

Thioune, at least, does know plenty about both Hamburg and Polzin. The latter’s first involvement in coaching was as the current Bremen boss’s assistant with Osnabrück’s U17s in 2014/15, before both moved into the same roles with the senior team in 2017. When Thioune was appointed HSV head coach three years later, he took Polzin along for the ride.

Thioune departed the Volksparkstadion towards the end of 2020/21, but Polzin remained on the staff and, when Steffen Baumgart was relieved of his duties in November 2024, Polzin moved into the dugout on an interim basis for a second time, before being appointed permanently.

His relationship with Polzin gives the game an extra edge, but Thioune is in no mood for sentimentality.

"The derby is on a whole different level," the 51-year-old explained. "At the end of the day, I take it personally, too. And even though I know the protagonist, the head coach on the other side: goodbye friendship.

"We know how important this derby win can be for everyone after a difficult season so far. We simply have to get the points."

Historically, Bremen have a slight advantage in terms of victories (39 to 35), but Hamburg have scored more goals (161 to 159) and won a dramatic reverse fixture 3-2 on Matchday 13.

With so few games left, the 110th Nordderby of the Bundesliga era could be season-defining for both teams. On Saturday, history and friendships will be put to one side in the search for crucial points in the relegation battle.
