Bayern Munich’s 2-1 win against Real Madrid on Tuesday marked Vincent Kompany’s 100th game as head coach of the club, and the result perfectly encapsulated all that Kompany has built at Bayern since taking over in the summer of 2024.

When Kompany took over as Bayern coach on 1 July 2024, having just been relegated from the Premier League with Burnley, there were more than a few eyebrows raised, but since then, the Belgian has thoroughly proved all of his doubters wrong.

In Kompany’s 100 games in charge, Bayern have won 76 games, drawn 13 and lost 11, a record that averages out to a staggering 2.41 points per game. Bayern have also scored 302 goals during Kompany’s tenure and conceded just 100.

Having won the Bundesliga in his opening campaign, Bayern have stepped it up another gear this season, winning each of their first 16 games in all competitions before drawing 2-2 with Union Berlin on Matchday 10 in the Bundesliga. That fine form has continued through, with Bayern still firmly competing on all fronts, having already won the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup this season.

In the Bundesliga, Bayern sit nine points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund with six games to go, and are firmly on course to claim their 34th Bundesliga title. In the DFB Cup, Bayern will travel to Bayer Leverkusen for their semi-final meeting on 22 April, as they seek to win the competition for the first time since 2020. Finally, in the Champions League, Bayern now have one foot in the semi-final, having won at the Santiago Bernabéu thanks to goals from Luis Díaz and Harry Kane.

In addition to Kompany’s century, Bayern brought up a Bundesliga century of their own in their 3-2 comeback win against Freiburg on Saturday as Lennart Karl’s 99th-minute winner marked the club’s 100th Bundesliga goal of the season. Der Rekordmeister have achieved this staggering feat in just 28 league games, putting them on course to not just break, but to smash, the previous record for Bundesliga goals in a season set by the Gerd Müller-inspired Bayern of the 1971/72 season. That record currently stands at 101 goals.

Naturally, Bayern’s goalscoring hasn’t been limited to the Bundesliga. Bayern are Europe’s top scoring side in all competitions by some margin, with 148 goals, sitting 21 ahead of Barcelona in second, a side managed by ex-Bayern coach, Hansi Flick.

So, how does Kompany compare to the likes of Flick? Well, Kompany’s 2.41 points per game is a tally that equals Pep Guardiola’s record at the German champions, but it still falls narrowly short of the totals of Flick and two spells from legendary manager Jupp Heynckes.

Heynckes managed Bayern on four separate occasions, and during his third spell, where he led the club to a historic treble, his side averaged 2.43 points per game, a total he later bettered during his fourth spell between 2017 and 2018, where Bayern averaged 2.49 points per game.

That total is only bettered by Flick, who managed to win a staggering 70 of his 86 Bayern games as coach, along with picking up a historic sextuple in 2020 as his Bayern side averaged 2.53 points per game.

Kompany’s record of 76 wins in his first 100 Bayern games is only bettered by Guardiola, whose Bayern side won 79 of his first 100 games.

Clearly, Kompany has built a sensational side during his tenure so far, and a team that is simply a joy to watch, and he could be on his way to achieving greatness with a club already so full of history.
