Father of Vincent Kompany dons Bayern Munich scarf in Belgian parliament
The father of Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany proudly wore a Bayern scarf in the Belgian parliament on Thursday, less than 24 hours after the Bavarians put four past Real Madrid to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Pierre Kompany fled Congo for Belgium in 1975, initially working as a taxi driver before entering politics in 2006. A member of the Belgian parliament since 2014, the 77-year-old was keen to publicly display his pride at his son’s achievements in guiding the Bavarians into the last four of Europe’s premier club competition.
Aleksandar Pavlović and Harry Kane were on target in the first half of Wednesday’s quarter-final first leg, with late goals from Luis Díaz and Michael Olise securing a 4-3 win on the night and a 6-4 aggregate victory over Alvaro Árbeloa’s charges.
Kompany Sr. was not the only prominent figure to don the red and white of Bayern in the aftermath of the victory, with German tennis star Alexander Zverev getting in on the act at the BMW Open in Munich.
Zverev, who was at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, wore a Bayern top with ’17 Olise’ on the back while warming up for his round of 16 singles and doubles matches on Thursday.
The 28-year-old, who only got back to his hotel room at 1.30am on Thursday morning, said: “What an experience it was. It was great for the kids as well. The players were really friendly, taking photos and signing autographs. It was enormous fun.”
Bayern stars Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabry returned the favour on Thursday by attending Zverev’s BMW Open victory over Gabriel Diallo.
