It was the moment Sorare users had long been waiting for as a Unique Erling Haaland NFT went up for auction – and it smashed the record for a sale on the platform.

The winning bid came in at just short of €614,000 (£511,000/$687,000), absolutely obliterating the previous highest sale of a Cristiano Ronaldo Unique item at €245,000 (£204,000/$274,000).

It makes this Haaland NFT one of the most valuable digital sports items in the world.

Last October the DFL and Sorare started a partnership allowing digital player items - in the form of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) - to be used in Sorare’s fantasy football game.

Next generation fantasy gamers who have already been busy trading and using these items on the Sorare platform now have even more to look forward to.

Sought-after player items from some of the Bundesliga’s top young talents were also auctioned this week. The Unique Haaland item featured alongside Rare or Super Rare player items of Dominik Szoboszlai (RB Leipzig), Taiwo Awoniyi (Union Berlin), Jamal Musiala (Bayern München), Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) and Lukas Nmecha (Wolfsburg).

Sorare’s fantasy football game is based on the performances of the players in real life, with players earning between 0 and 100 points per game based on positive (goals, assists) or negative (red cards) events that occur on matchday. Five players form a team and compete against other users each matchday.
