St. Pauli and Eintracht Frankfurt play out tense goalless draw at Millerntor
St. Pauli are back in the relegation play-off spot, despite taking a point off seventh-placed Eintracht Frankfurt in a goalless draw on Matchday 25.
St. Pauli 0-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
Pauli had been enjoying their best form of the season with three wins from their previous four outings, lifting them to 15th place – out of the automatic relegation spots for the first time since November.
Frankfurt, meanwhile, arrived with their new coach Albert Riera still seeking his first away win despite an impressive home victory against Freiburg and a possession-heavy approach that has already become his tactical hallmark.
Woodwork denies hosts in first half
Despite the Eagles dominating possession in the early exchanges, Pauli grew into the match, with Arkadiusz Pyrka posing problems down the left flank.
The home side created the clearest opportunities of the first half, coming agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock twice. In the 24th minute, Mathias Pereira Lage saw his effort cannon off the left post after good work from Tomoya Andō.
Seven minutes later, Danel Sinani struck the opposite upright with a powerful long-range effort, leaving Frankfurt goalkeeper Michael Zetterer beaten on both occasions.
Frankfurt press but fail to penetrate
Frankfurt emerged with greater intent after the break, nearly taking the lead in the 46th minute when Jean-Mattéo Bahoya forced a smart save from Nikola Vasilj.
Pauli suffered a setback when Manolis Saliakas was forced off with an injury in the 48th minute; he was replaced by Lars Ritzka.
Andō received a yellow card in the 62nd minute and was subsequently substituted for Adam Dźwigała, while Frankfurt introduced Ritsu Dōan for Höjlund as both coaches sought to break the deadlock.
Despite the Eagles controlling 71% of possession and making nearly three times as many passes as their hosts, they struggled to convert territorial advantage into meaningful opportunities, with Jonathan Burkardt's 84th-minute header their best chance of a tense second period.
Frankfurt stay seventh, but Pauli drop to 16th following Werder Bremen's 4-1 win at Union Berlin.
Man of the Match: Aurèle Amenda
Aurèle Amenda produced a commanding defensive display that epitomised Frankfurt's resilient performance at the Millerntor. The centre-back was decisive in nullifying St. Pauli's counter-attacking threat, making crucial interventions particularly against the dangerous Pereira Lage.
With an impressive 12 challenges won and excellent positioning throughout the 90 minutes, Amenda was instrumental in securing a valuable clean sheet for the Eagles.
His composed distribution also helped Frankfurt maintain their possession advantage, completing 89% of his passes and enabling his side to control the tempo despite the hostile atmosphere in Hamburg.
