Bayer Leverkusen's Patrik Schick and Mainz's Jonathan Burkardt have scored 18 goals between them across the last six matchdays, making the teams' meeting on Tuesday all the more of an enticing prospect.

Schick has been in incredible form in recent weeks, having struggled for consistency over the past couple of years.

The Leverkusen frontman already has an impressive Bundesliga goalscoring record with 64 in 125 games. Despite this, his current tally of 12 is his second highest single-season haul in the league, behind only his 24 goals in the 2021/21 campaign.

The 28-year-old's numbers remain impressive, especially given the significant time missed through injury. Having spent a large portion of his side’s 2023/24 title winning campaign in the treatment room, Schick appears determined to be the man to fire them to another one this time around.

His eye-catching exploits over the past six weeks have seen him score two or more goals on three occasions already, including four in one game against European hopefuls Freiburg, who had only conceded four times across the three games before meeting Schick and his teammates on Matchday 15.

He then followed that up with a brace in his side's 3-2 win against Dortmund on Matchday 16, a fact made all the more impressive considering BVB hadn't conceded more than two goals at home all season before meeting Xabi Alonso's side. His current form led the Leverkusen boss to label him as "the best Patrik I've seen in my time here".

Schick is now the Bundesliga’s all-time top scoring Czech player (64), with his form this term propelling him past previous record holder Jan Koller (62). He also lies in second this season in terms of goalscoring efficiency (+4.77), bettered only by the seemingly unstoppable Omar Marmoush (+4.81).

Burkardt, meanwhile, has made history of his own this season, becoming Mainz’s all-time top scorer in the Bundesliga (35), overtaking Karim Onisiwo (33). His 12 goals in 2024/25 also make him the highest scoring German in the league at the moment, with Tim Kleindienst and Jamal Musiala (nice each) his closest competitors.

For Burkardt, this is already his best ever return in the Bundesliga, bettering his previous high of 11 set in 2021/22. The Mainz man’s total Bundesliga tally before this season was 23 goals; now he has netted just over half that amount in 12 games.

With seven of those goals coming in the last five games, Burkardt has helped lift Mainz to fifth place, just two points behind RB Leipzig and Frankfurt. His stellar form this season has been rewarded with a call up to the Germany national team, with his debut coming in October 2024 against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Having made his Bundesliga debut for Mainz at 18 and being a prolific scorer for Germany’s U21 side (10 goals in 20 games), he may have expected his senior debut to come sooner; nevertheless, Burkardt seems to have found his rhythm and has even been handed the captain’s armband this season at 24 years of age.

Better than ever and injury free, Burkardt is pushing his side toward European football. Leverkusen, you have been warned!
