Steffen Tigges seals victory as Paderborn stun Hoffenheim for first win of the season
Paderborn claimed their first win of the season against Hoffenheim on Matchday 4, with Steffen Tigges coming off the bench to score a decisive third goal.
Paderborn 3-1 Hoffenheim
Goals: 1-0 Castaneda 29', 2-0 Marino 42' (assist: Curda), 2-1 Daghim 50' (assist: Moerstedt), 3-1 Tigges 69' (assist: Sticker)
Paderborn went into the fixture still searching for their first goal and win of the season, with only a single point from the 0-0 draw at Mainz to show for their efforts so far. Head coach Ralf Kettemann fielded an unchanged starting XI for the third time in four league matches.
Hoffenheim, coming off a Europa League defeat away to OFI Crete, made two changes to their side, with Kōki Machida and Max Moerstedt replacing Albian Hajdari and Tim Lemperle.
Castaneda and Marino send hosts in front
The opening exchanges were fairly even, with both sides testing each other before Vladimír Coufal struck the post for Hoffenheim on 23 minutes. Moments later, Paderborn took the lead against the flow of play, from a corner that Hoffenheim failed to clear, Santiago Castaneda turned on the edge of the box and sent a deflected effort past Oliver Baumann for his first goal for the club, and Paderborn's first of the campaign.
Just before the break, Laurin Curda drove forward down the right and squared for Stefano Marino to tap in from close range, sending the hosts 2-0 up at the break.
Daghim pulls one back before Tigges settles it
Hoffenheim started the second half the better side and got their reward on the 50-minute mark when Moerstedt worked the ball back inside for Adam Daghim, who slotted past Nahuel Noll to make it 2-1. The visitors continued to press, with Bambasé Conté denied by the crossbar and then the post as Hoffenheim searched for an equaliser.
Against the run of play, Paderborn restored their two-goal cushion on 69 minutes when substitute Tigges held the ball up before meeting Jonah Sticker's cross with a precise header to make it 3-1. Hoffenheim continued to press through Conté and substitutes Patrick Wimmer and Fisnik Asllani, but Paderborn held firm to see out the win.
Player of the Match: Steffen Tigges
Introduced at half-time for Marvin Pieringer, Steffen Tigges proved the difference for Paderborn. He held the ball up well in the build-up and then scored the decisive third goal with a header from Jonah Sticker's cross, restoring the hosts' two-goal cushion just as Hoffenheim were gathering momentum after their equaliser.
